BOULDER - The University of Colorado Potts Indoor Invitational got off to a great start on Friday afternoon with sophomore Mark Jones tying for first in the high jump.

Jones, who cleared six feet, 11 inches, tied for first with Seun Ogunmodede (Colorado School of Mines). Both cleared on their first attempts at the height.

"I'm very pleased with this jump," assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. "I'm especially excited because he jumped 7-01.50 at the intra-squad meet a month ago, so for his first meet in uniform to come in at 6-11 is great. We know what his capabilities are and we are very excited to see how he progresses this season."

The CU women were led by sophomore Kelsey English, who placed second to Malone in the high jump. Malone recorded her best jump in two season, reaching 5-08. English jumped 5-06.

"It felt amazing [to win]," Malone said. "I had a big injury that I'm coming back from, so I hope this is something that my team can look at and see that it is possible to come back from an injury and do well."

English is a two-sport athlete, competing on the volleyball team during the fall. She joined the track team last week and has just less than two weeks of practice under her belt.

"Kelsey started last week and almost got 5-10 at the first meet of the season," Malone said. "There is a big, bright future for her during indoors right now. She is very focused and showed great mental fortitude today joining the competition at a higher height than she normally would since she got out of class a little later."

The Buffs had three athletes tie for third overall in the women's high jump. Brittany Lewis, who is completing this season unattached, Abrianna Torres and Brianne Beemer cleared 5-04.25. Genny Mayden and Holly Odneal tied for sixth (5-02.25), while Gwen Ricco and Ewelina Pena jumped 5-00.25 for 11[SUP]th[/SUP]-place.

A pair of men competed in the pole vault for CU. Brock Emory notched a personal best when he reached 13-03.50 and Jason DeWitt also had the same mark. The pair tied for sixth. CU volunteer assistant coach Adam Salzmann cleared 14-03.25 to tie for third.

Malone was extremely pleased with the performances from her group today and is excited to see what happens as the season progresses.
"Today we had several PRs for our men and women; last week we had half a dozen," Malone said. "Coming out and having a lifetime best this early in the season is a really good sign that they are taking it seriously."

The Potts Invite will conclude on Saturday, Jan. 19. The first events are the men's weight throw and the women's shot put at 10 a.m.; running events will commence at 2 p.m. with the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash. A complete schedule is available at CUBuffs.com/trackandfield.
