Kicking Situation

FYI, we need a snapper and a holder!! snapping ducks back will not help the situation and Cody Hawkins is the best holder we have leave him in there, do not mess with others right now. In addition, yesterday's stats: Kirkwood 2-2 with starters, goodman 1-5, grossnickle 3-5 one hit the oline. kirkwood and grossnickle will get the job done. I look at it like this the only way to go is up, 48% is certainly attainable.

Taken chances? Whatever! The last kid I coach made his college team as a freshman and made all conference and over 80% of his kicks. Try again.

He's referencing a quote from a Coach Hawkin's interview. D3H usually hits just over 80% of his attempts at sarcasm.

he was being sarcastic and paraphrasing one of our favorite hawkisms. hawk criticizes anyone who questions him by saying that they don't know what they are talking about because they aren't coaches and/or parents.

and...:yeahthat:

In all seriousness why not have qualified coaches who want to volunteer their time come in and at least see how the interact with the players?

My bad D3H...I missed it!

No worries my friend.

I think the only "locks" we should have at the specialist positions is Goodman on Kickoffs. Grossnickle at Punter.

FG kicking is a competition right now, and should be given to who performs the best in game-time situations, regardless of other duties.

It's good to hear about Kirkwood, what is his background? He is a Junior right? Where was he playing before he walked on at CU?

Snapper was pretty deep last year with Drescher and Bisnow, but very strange to have them both in the same class without developing an underclassman, but that is life at CU at a great many positions with this staff.

It's great to have some discussion on these issues as field position and clutch kicking were monumental disasters for us recently.

Any insight on why DiLallo regressed during his time with Riddle?

If you have read this forum very much, you will see that there is few (maybe zero?) fans of Riddle as special teams coach.

Kirkwood's background, here you go:
New placekicker on CU roster: Marcus Kirkwood

#38 Kirkwood, Marcus PK 6-6 210 So. Arvada, Colo. (Faith Christian / Concordia)

Played soccer and basketball (not football as far as I could determine) at 3A Faith Christian in Colorado. Graduated in spring 2007.

Played club soccer for Boulder Force soccer.

Honorable mention, all-state soccer in 2006.
First team, all-league soccer 2006
Won Colorado 3A state soccer championship in 2006 (scored winning goal in 70th minute.)

Walk On Kickers Background

Thanks Alferd!

I can see why coaches would be leary of turning the reigns over to him since he has very limited football experience, but at least they recognize his potential by having him in camp at all.

I heard that Ryan Aweida was coming on strong at practices last year, but left the team because he was discouraged of ever seeing the field. He was warming up in the Nebraska game, but did not get to kick.

Especially appreciate you and anyone else who can differentiate between the kickers. Keep hearing "all punting is bad" or "kicking is okay" but all the kickers and punters cannot be doing the same thing. The stats give a clearer picture. Good to hear Kirkwood is kicking some, didn't see him at all when I went one day last week. Not sure why.

The "all Colorado" long snapper is a homeschooler who was quoted as saying he wanted to walk on at CU, but never heard if contact was made.

:pcguru:

... but seriously, if hearing isn't a prerequisite for longsnapper and this kid is that good ... or any good ... WHY wouldn't someone say, "come on down and talk to us." Can only hope this is happening behind the scenes. Surely they read the Denver Post preps section?

I really don't think the coaches care about the kicking game. I tried to help, I offered my services. I called and e-mailed. I dont want to get paid, I just want to help the kickers. All I ask is that they call and confirm they would like me to help. Never got a call! Oh well. I guess they get what they get.

I missed this earlier, but remember the CU coaches are restricted on additional "coaches." If you want to work with kickers and punters, I think you have to make independent contact otherwise it's a possible NCAA violation for too many coaches. EVEN if the guy says he's not paid, the college can't find someone to work with them.

No worries my friend.

I think this coaching staff is AWESOME. It has improved the sarcasm around here by leaps and bounds. :smile2:

Seriously, though, I can't really blame this staff for not taking a guy that ends up at Wyoming. You can't hit 'em all.

scrimmage report:

I'll just drop this here.

A few things I noticed that hopefully are within the bounds of what we can say:

Kicking:
at the end of each series they would line up for a 32 yard field goal or thereabouts.
Goodman missed his.
Kirkwood missed his.
Grossnickle made his. He then made the next 4 or 5. Cool as a cucumber. Looked like a kicker.
Goodman made one near the end.

Punting:
Grossnickle is the only one punting. Ridiculous hang time on punts that spiraled. Some didn't. One bad punt, a few ok, and a few very nice.

    Thanks, AJ.

So, in all actuality, there is no evidence to suggest that Goodman is any better than a 65% accuracy placekicker since that's his known high water mark for his career. That's simply not good enough. I can understand that with him having a big leg and also being able to get the ball in the air quickly with a lot of height (even when kicking without a tee)... why coaches have watched him kick and thought he could be great. But, for whatever reason, that aspect of his game hasn't worked out. Those high, powerful kicks make him a great kickoff guy, though.

Although walkon Kirkwood showed better at kickoffs (in terms of touchbacks) at the scrimmage - it's just one day, but that surprised me.
