BOULDER – Colorado volleyball hosts its second-straight top-25 matchup this weekend when No.11-ranked Oregon comes to town Friday at 7 p.m. before hosting Oregon State Sunday at noon.

The 24th-ranked Buffs (10-1, 1-1 Pac-12) are fifth in the conference standings after the opening weekend. They join the top-ranked Ducks (11-1, 2-0 Pac-12) and UCLA as the only one-loss teams in the conference. Oregon State (2-10, 0-2 Pac-12) is last in the conference with 10 losses.

Friday, Colorado will honor breast cancer survivors at the match dressing in pink and taping the court in pink. Their 'Dig Pink' match will also give out 200 pink CU Volleyball shirts to the first 200 fans. Sunday the team will honor mental health awareness with green in their shirts and equipment.

SCOUTING THE DUCKS
The 11th-ranked team in the nation has a lone loss against then-No.13 Minnesota in five sets at home. They defeated five straight unranked opponents to start the season, dropping only one set. They swept then-ranked 18 Penn State at home. Since the loss they have won five straight including five-set matches against Harvard and Arizona State.

They are 13th in the nation in hitting percentage at .284 led by Brooke Nuneviller's 3.57 kills per set in the 6-2 offense. Taylor Borup and Gloria Mutiri have 107 and 106 kills each. Oregon is also 13th in the nation in opponent hitting percentage led by being ninth in the nation at 2.8 blocks per set. Karson Bacon is second in the nation with a .471 hitting percentage while Abby Hanson's 1.41 blocks per set is good for 17th in the nation.

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
The Beavers are 2-10 after starting with a five-set win against Oklahoma. Since they have losses against LSU, Houston, Penn State, Iowa State and a five-set loss at Moby against CSU. Their one other win came against Southern Illinois Edwardsville, but they have since lost four straight without winning a set.

The Beavers are led by Grace Massey who is second in the Pac-12 at 4.81 digs per set. The team is hitting just .155 led by Lindsey Schell with 2.95 kills per set with 124 total. Schell also leads the team with 36 total blocks.

Buffs playing short handed with neither kill leader Clayton or main defensive specialist Neverdowski in the lineup. (I just got to the match, and I don't see Clayton on the sideline, but Neverdowski is on crutches with a large boot on one leg.)

On the court, Buffs call a timeout as the ducks go up 16-19.

It's 15-14 Buffs in the 1st set.

I was going to wander down, but ran out of steam for both that and the Stampede. I mean, Foundation, Morning Show and Foundation all dropped (and I got up at 5 every day this week).

Buffs come back from a late 1st 5 (or more?) Point deficit, and win the 1st 25-23.

Keep it up Buffs!

Just saw this:

I also want to mention it looks like the Buffs and their fans are going to "see the future now" the rest of this season, as I just checked the roster, and I can't see senior kill leader Leah Clayton on it anymore.

In her stead, at least tonight, true freshman Jahara Campbell is now the 2nd outside hitter (playing in front row rotations only), and sophomore Maya Tabron, who had usually only been playing in the front row and serving, is now playing all 6 rotations.

For defensive specialist duties, looks like sophomore Morgan Riddle has taken over after Ms. Neverdowski's injury. (Believe she was the one serving when the Buffs had their big 1st set comeback.)

On the court, CU is down 9-14 in the 2nd set.

Buffs fight hard, but fall behind by as much as 3 late, and lose a tight 3rd set 23-25.

Ducks up 2 sets to 1.

Buffs fight hard, but ducks get the match after winning the 4th 22-25.

Late in the 3rd set, frosh Jahara Campbell looked to fall awkwardly, was down for a bit, and didn't return. She seemed to only be limping slightly, and I believe was standing with her teammates the 4th set, so hopefully the injury (looked to maybe be an ankle?) is very minor. Junior Kelley Levaggi took her place on the floor, and had a few nice kills.

From the article linked to below about tonight's match, a couple things:

1) Thankfully, re Jahara Campbell's injury, Coach Mahoney says in the quotes section "Jahara had cramps. Her calf was cramping a little bit. I don't think it's a major issue. I think she'll be good to go if she's needed."

2) In one of his quotes, he did confirm that Leah Clayton wasn't playing (or with the team at all) because of suspension. (For any interested, the Buffzone article (by Pat Rooney) on the match (https://www.buffzone.com/2021/10/01...-volleyball-falls-short-against-no-11-oregon/) has a little more on Ms. Clayton's status and history, although as expected there's no indication what "team rule(s)" she's violated.)

What Clayton did must have been bad. I do appreciate a coach that stands by team rules knowing that it will hurt the team for the remainder of the season.

I am in Toronto and the match started too late for me to try and find it from here. I was watch Twitter for updates.

I do hope Zoe recovers enough to come back this season.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's volleyball team swept Oregon State 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-19) here Sunday afternoon behind a strong team hitting performance.

The 24th-ranked Buffaloes (11-2, 2-2 Pac-12) earned their 11th win hitting .322 and holding the Beavers (2-12, 0-4 Pac-12) to a .126 hitting percentage behind nine CU blocks.

Outside hitter Maya Tabron led the team with 13 kills and a .435 hitting percentage. She also added in nine digs and a pair of blocks. Alexia Kuehl also had a strong showing hitting .462 with seven kills and leading Colorado with five blocks. They were joined by Jill Schneggenburger with seven kills and Meegan Hart with six.

Jenna Ewert led the offense with 33 assists and was one of three players to put down an ace. On the defensive side, Hart had four blocks while Jahara Campbell added three. Brynna DeLuzio led the team with a dozen digs.

Oregon State's Maddie Goings led the Beavers with a match-high 14 kills while hitting .235. She was also targeted the most with 21 receptions, more than doubling the rest of the team.

The Buffaloes head on the road next week for a pair of conference matchups against ranked UCLA Friday at 9 p.m. MT and follow it up against USC at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

QUOTES
HEAD COACH JESSE MAHONEY

On The Win
We fought hard on Friday. We had a really quick turnaround. With the early film session yesterday morning and practice, like always, this team is really good about being focused and focusing on the next match instead of the last match. We had a great session on Saturday, and we were energized to play this match. I know (Oregon State's) record, but that's still a Pac-12 team and a good team with some high-level players on it. I was happy that we won and certainly happy to get a sweep. Those don't happen in this league very often.

On Being Able To Bounce Back After Friday's Loss Against Oregon
Last week was a little bit of a stressful week with losing a couple of players and having to reshuffle some things and figure out a lineup that works and makes sense for us. We're still evolving a little bit. We lose someone who scores us five points a set -- everyone else has to step up. We're looking to continue to build and continue to get better going on the road in the Pac-12. It's always tough, especially against two really good teams (in UCLA and USC). We're going to have to continue to grow.

This team had a difficult week. I am happy they pulled themselves together to beat the Beavs. I know the team is not the caliber of Oregon, but the players needed to get some confidence that they can play the rest of the season without Clayton.
