BOULDER – Colorado soccer returns to Prentup Field for the first time since Sept. 9, hosting Washington on Thursday (3 p.m. P12 Networks).

Colorado (5-3-1, 0-0-1 Pac-12) was last in front of the CU faithful in its 4-2 win over Cal State Fullerton. Since then, the Buffaloes have gone 1-1-1 on the road over the last three weeks.

"We're excited to be back home," head coach Danny Sanchez commented. "We've been on the road for three weeks. There's nothing like playing at Prentup. There are five home games left this year so we know we have to take advantage of these opportunities to be at home."

The Buffs opened Pac-12 play last week with a 2-2 draw at California. CU got two early goals from Shanade Hopcroft and Allie Palangi but saw the Golden Bears get two unanswered goals in the second half to force the draw.

"I think we got off to a great start [at Cal] but there was a lot of soccer left to be played," Sanchez continued. We got through the first half, which we wanted to do. We gave up the goal early in the second half and you could see the momentum shift.

I thought we did ok after that. Give credit to Cal. I thought their second goal was very good. I liked how we responded later in the game, but especially the overtime. I thought we were really playing on the front foot, creating more of the opportunities. If we're honest with ourselves, a 2-2 draw was probably a fair result. Like I told the team, it's a good result on the road against a good team."

Colorado and Washington met in back-to-back contests in the 2020* season. The two games were No. 4 and 5 on the season for the Buffs. The first match was a 0-0 draw with the second finishing in a 2-1 result for the Huskies. CU owns a slim 4-3-4 advantage in the series.

"Washington is a very good team," Sanchez added. "They went to the Sweet 16 last year and are basically the same team, especially on the attack. I think last year, there were just so many factors being that played into it that I don't think we were up to speed for the Pac-12 game. We got exposed that first weekend. I thought the rest of the conference season we played well. Washington puts a lot of pressure on you, and they are very dynamic on the attack. We know we're going to have to play well if we are going to get a result tomorrow."

UW (2-4-2, 0-0-1 Pac-12) opened its Pac-12 season with a 2-2 draw against Arizona State. Similar to Colorado, two of the Huskies' losses have come against top-ranked opponents in No. 3 North Carolina and No. 6 Duke. Jessika Cowart and Summer Yates lead UW with two goals apiece. The Huskies have yet to get the offensive attack going, totaling eight goals in eight games (12th Pac-12).

The first 250 fans on Thursday will get a free CU soccer koozie. Fans at Sunday's game will receive a t-shirt giveaway.

Washington State (7-1-1, 1-0-0 Pac-12) will travel to Colorado on Sunday. The Cougars play at Utah on Thursday.

Thad Anderson will have the call on the Pac-12 Network for both matches.

GOOAAALLLL BUFFS in the 8th minute. Sharts gets a header in on a corner kick from Hopcroft!

Buffs go up 2-1 in the 31st minute as Hopcroft scores on the penalty kick after udub commits a handball in the box!

Arrived about the 31st minute, thus I missed all the goals, the PK by just a minute or so.

The last 30 minutes or so the Buffs looked like they were going to concede the tying goal. Indeed, the Huskies did put one in the back of the net which was called back when the RA (referee's assistant - on the sideline) raised the flag for offside.

So, CU held on, but boy do they have some work to do. There needs to be better possession and more composure on the ball.

Article and highlights after yesterday's win.

(Note- after the article was released, WSU completed a tough 1-0 win in SLC over Utah, so Sunday the Buffs will be facing one of only two Pac teams that remain undefeated and untied (so at 6 points) after only two matches in conference play (USC being the other).)-

BOULDER – Colorado senior Shanade Hopcroft continued her offensive tear on Thursday. She tallied a goal and an assist, helping the Buffaloes preserve a 2-1 win over Washington.

Hopcroft's goal in the 31st minute proved to be the game-winner. She has totaled nine points (3 G, 3 A) over CU's last three games and has four goals in her last five matches.

"If you are going to be a premier Division I player you have to get it done in Pac-12 play," head coach Danny Sanchez said about Hopcroft's play. "So far she has. It's not so much about the goals, but her movement and energy. She can play 90 more minutes right now and not miss a beat. We're going to need her to move around a lot. I thought she was a little quiet in the second half, but in the first half she was all over the place."

Colorado (6-3-1, 1-0-1 Pac-12) got on the board first with a header from senior Hannah Sharts. Washington would get back to even near the midway point of the opening half, but a costly mistake led to Hopcroft's crucial penalty goal.

Washington pushed the Buffs in the final moments, creating drama inside the final two minutes. Both teams got yellow cards in the final minute of play, following a disallowed Husky goal in the 88th minute.

"I thought we started well," Sanchez noted. "A little disappointed to give up the goal. Like I told the team, I was really pleased with how we played in the first 30-35 minutes of the second half. I thought our movement was very good. [Washington's] Summer Yates is a first-team All-American. I thought we dealt with her well. They are an experienced, quality squad. The last 10 minutes was a little frantic but for the most part, I thought we defended well and really limited their opportunities"

The Buffs took advantage of its set-piece opportunities, earning seven corners on the day. Colorado got five corner chances in the second half and limited Washington to just two chances throughout the match.

Washington (2-4-2, 0-1-1 Pac-12) got its goal from Vanessa Millsaps and goalkeeper Olivia Sekany made two saves.

BOULDER—Colorado soccer looks to complete the 2-0 homestand when they take on Washington State on Sunday (Noon, Pac-12 Networks).

Colorado (6-3-1, 1-0-1 Pac-12) took down Washington by a 2-1 result on Thursday, picking up its first Pac-12 win of the season. Super senior Shanade Hopcroft continued to lead the way for the Buffaloes. She has accumulated nine points (3 G, 3 A) in CU's last three matches.

The Buffs hope to turn the tide against the Cougars. CU has dropped its last two matches to WSU, including last year's heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss at Prentup Field.

"They are a very good team," head coach Danny Sanchez noted. "They are 8-1-1 after beating Utah. They are very dangerous in the attack. We'll have to do a good job of controlling the ball and keeping it away from their dangerous players. They play with a fight and we're going to have to match that intensity. I'm not sure when we played in the spring that we did. I think we'll need to bring our best game on Sunday to get a result."

The Buffs did a good job of controlling the ball against the Huskies, especially in the second half. Five of CU's seven corner kicks came in the final 45 minutes. Colorado's seven total corner attempts matched its season-high against Colorado College. CU only mustered two corner kicks against WSU in the previous matchup.

"I thought we played some of our best soccer in the second half against Washington," Sanchez added. "Not in terms of goals, but we did really well with our control."

WSU is coming off a 1-0 win at Utah on Thursday. The Cougars outshot the Utes 20-7, putting eight shots on target. WSU is outscoring its opponents 27-3 through its first 10 games this season and hasn't allowed a goal in its last five matches.

"This is Pac-12 soccer," Sanchez explained. "For the players that haven't been indoctrinated into it, this is what you're going to get every Thursday and Sunday."

Sunday's match closes the quick homestand for the Buffs. Fans through the gates will receive a t-shirt giveaway (as supplies last).

Thad Anderson will have the call on the Pac-12 Network.

Match day, with the scheduled start less than 2 hours away!!
(Assume that conference travel rules may cause this, but it would be nice if, one of these years, the different teams start coordinating their schedules so that, when possible, they don't have home sporting events (like soccer and volleyball today) at the same time.)

Go Buffs!!!

After a pretty flowy 1st half that saw both sides have good opportunities, it's still tied at 0 at the half.

A defensive lapse leads to a breakaway wsu goal in the 58th minute. They lead 0-1.

WSU has the run of play in the 2nd half, a couple bad defensive lapses and bounces, and the Buffs can't convert on the quality attempts they have against the Cougars talented frosh goalie.

0-2 is the final.

There's only time to improve as CU heads west next weekend to face the 2 VERY strong So. Cal schools.
