VOLLEYBALL (6-0), after 2 straight 3 match road tourneys the 1st 2 weekends of this season, are slotted for another 3 match tourney this week, only this time they get to host. The tourney, the Buff Invitational, begins for CU Friday evening when they face off with the Arkansas Razorbacks (1-3). followed by a Saturday evening tilt with the Toledo Rockets (5-1), and then's CU finale for the week with a matchup Sunday afternoon against the Denver Pioneers (DU; 4-1).
(After this weekend, only the annual home and away with CSU is left before conference play begins.)
Edit - For any other general volleyball fans, other matches being played at the CU Events Center are Denver vs. Toledo (Friday beginning at 3:00 PM MT), Denver vs. Arkansas (Saturday at 3:00 PM MT), and Toledo vs. Arkansas (Sunday at 11:00 AM MT).

Not that they mean much of anything for this season, but wanted to give some various ratings for the teams from last (2024) season and, for Massey, the current (very young) season . (From what I read in the Volleytalk forum, RPI and KPI are the only 2 ratings that the NCAA selection committees use for tourney selection, while the Massey rankings, which are the only other free ratings I know of for volleyball, are considered more accurate (then at least RPI) as they factor in things like scores and home vs. away results, which RPI doesn't for volleyball. The RPI and KPI below are still from last season, while I decided to use the most current current season Massey ratings.)
RPI (dated 12/22/24, https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/volleyball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-volleyball-rpi ) - CU ended up at #97, while Arkansas was #73, Toledo was #170 and DU #181.
KPI (https://faktorsports.com/. Note that to get these numbers I had to select various options to obtain these numbers.) - CU ended up at #111, while Arkansas was #48, Toledo was #144 and DU #187.
Massey ((from https://masseyratings.com/cvol2024/11590/ratings) - CU is at #25, while Arkansas is #96, Toledo is #137 and DU #108.

As was true both last season and so far this season (for soccer), streams should be available for all home matches and road conference matches for those with a premium ($) ESPN+ subscription. (See more details and links near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE: In the second match of the Buffs Invitational, the Buffs will go head-to-head with the Toledo Rockets. This will be the opening matchup in Buffs-Rockets program history, and this is the third and final time this season Colorado will meet an opponent for the first time. Toledo is 5-1 on the 2025 season so far.

THE COLORADO TRAIL: CU's last match of the weekend is against in-state nonconference rival the Denver Pioneers. This will be the 13th matchup between the two programs, and the Buffs have won 11-straight going into this competition. The only time the Buffs have lost to the Pioneers was in 1986 in the teams' first meeting, where CU fell in four sets (Sept. 16, 1986). The Pioneers are currently 4-1 on the 2025 season.

I assume because the 1st match today went 5 sets, looks like the start of the CU match is now scheduled for around 6:20 or so. (Toledo beat the Pioneers in that 1st match.)

Buffs Roughhouse with Razorbacks, Earn Seventh-Straight in Home Opener

By: Malala Pyle, Assistant Director of Athletic Communication

BOULDER –
The Colorado volleyball team (7-0, 0-0 Big 12) defeated Arkansas (1-5, 0-0 SEC) in four sets (22-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-22) at the CU Events Center on Friday, Sept. 12. This marks back-to-back years that CU has seen a victory over an SEC team. Junior pin attacker Lily Dwinell reached her 500th career kill in the first set of the match.

The Buffs overcame a flat start, coming out of the first set with a tight 25-22 loss. After leading the whole way in the second, CU's momentum shifted, and it came out with wins in the second, third and fourth sets.

"It was a really good match," head coach Jesse Mahoney said. "Both sides played really physically. We did not serve well in that first set […] We were still able to keep it close. We made really nice adjustments in sets two, three and four in terms of who was serving and how we were serving. We were able to get them out of system and capitalize."

The Buffaloes out-hit (52-48), out-assisted (50-45), out-dug (48-43) and out-aced (9-3) the Razorbacks. Colorado held Arkansas to .194 hitting on the night and hit .364 in the fourth set.

KEY PLAYERS:
  • Jr. PIN Sydney Jordan recorded the first double-double of the season, and seventh of her career, with 15 kills, hitting .367 (4e, 30att) and 15 digs. She also scored five aces for the Buffs, her second match in a row doing so.
  • JORDAN ON MOMENTUM SHIFT: "As a team, we know our jobs…everyone does a really good job executing their exact job on the court, it isn't flashy, but it's something that we've gotten so much better at from last year to this year. That's something that people watching might not always see, but that's something that we feel on the court. We're doing things right systematically, and that gives us confidence."
  • Jr. PIN Lily Dwinell reached her 500th career kill and finished the match with five kills, four digs and a block.
  • Sr. S Rian Finley saw 43 assists, three digs, two kills and one ace.
  • Jr. PIN Ana Burilovic earned 20 kills, five digs, four blocks and two aces for Colorado.
  • BURILOVIC ON SUCCESS ON THE COURT: "We just realized we needed to be more aggressive. We were really fluffy in the first set […] We just [needed] to play our game, we don't need to do anything else, just do what we do best."
  • Jr. MB Cayla Payne led the match in blocks with five (one solo). She also recorded seven kills.
  • So. MB Maria Splawska saw three kills, two blocks and one dig.
  • Jr. DS/L Peyton Neal had eight digs and an assist, and Sr. DS/L Sarah Morton totaled 10 digs and five assists.
  • Jr. DS/L Avery Bolles had one dig and one ace, and Fr. S Audrey Asleson had one assist, one dig and a block.
  • For the Razorbacks, Lakin Laurendine had 13 kills and Kiki Remensperger had 13 digs.
...

UP NEXT
  • The Buffaloes remain at home for the next match of the Buffs Invitational on Sept. 13. Colorado's second of three matches is against Toledo, and first serve is set for 6 p.m. MT. The match will be streamed on ESPN+, and fans can follow along via live stats links on CUBuffs.com.

MATCH NOTES:
  • CU improves to 1-1 in the series with the Razorbacks all-time.
  • The last time the Buffs were 7-0 to start the season, having lost only three sets, was in 2022.
  • The Buffaloes got their first 3-1 victory of the season and are 1-0 in four-set matches.

Tonight's match is about to begin.

One change to the typical starting lineup, with frosh middle blocker Grenadier getting her 2nd start of the season.

A schizophrenic 1st set thankfully finds the good CU take the lead 1-0 by a 25-22 score. (They had a very rough patch in the middle where a 15-10 lead quickly turned into a 16-19 deficit, but they were able to shake it off.)

First set was strange. This year's team is better mentally which makes them better physically.

Hope they can pull off another W this afternoon.

Tourney day #3, with the scheduled 1st serve less than 4 hours away!

Buffs Sweep Rockets, Improve to 8-0

By: Malala Pyle, Assistant Director of Athletic Communication

BOULDER –
The Colorado volleyball team (8-0, 0-0 Big 12) defeated Toledo (6-2, 0-0 MAC) in three sets (25-22, 25-15, 25-15) at the Colorado Events Center on Saturday, Sept. 13. The Buffs have only lost three sets this season, making this the Buffs' second-best start in program history.

In the Buffs' sixth sweep of the 2025 season, CU saw a tight first set against the Rockets. After regrouping and gathering some momentum, Colorado won both sets two and three handily by 10 points each.

"Happy to get out with a win, a 3-0 win, especially with three matches on a weekend, because we've got a quick turnaround to play tomorrow," head coach Jesse Mahoney said. "We struggled in that first set. They served really well, and we gave up a lot of free points. We were able to right the ship there in the second half of that set, and I think we did a really nice job in sets two and three, certainly from a serving standpoint and from a defensive standpoint."

Colorado had more out-killed (34-23), out-assisted (28-22), out-dug (43-30) and out-aced (10-8) Toledo.

KEY PLAYERS:
  • Jr. PIN Sydney Jordan led the Buffs in blocks with four (two solo) and had nine kills, two aces and eight digs.
  • Sr. S Rian Finley had 25 aces, four digs, two kills and an ace.
  • FINLEY ON COMMUNICATION: "This offense, it's got a really good communication base. I really thrive getting feedback from my hitters, because sometimes I don't deliver a perfect set that they're wanting. Having that open communication line with my hitters is my main goal of making sure I can deliver what they need. But I have to give a lot of credit to our serve-receive passers and our defenders. We are passing amazing balls this year, and it's giving me the ability to open up the court and deliver the balls to the hitters that I need to."
  • Jr. PIN Ana Burilovic led the match with 12 kills, and she also totaled four aces, four digs, one solo block and one assist.
  • Jr. MB Cayla Payne had six kills and three digs for CU, and So. DS/L Katie Salonga had one ace and one assist.
  • So. MB Maria Splawska saw one dig and one block for the Buffs, and Jr. DS/L Peyton Neal had 13 digs and one assist.
  • Jr. PIN Lily Dwinell recorded two kills, and Sr. DS/L Sarah Morton had 10 digs and two aces.
  • MORTON ON BUILDING MOMENTUM: "It's a lot about energy and grit, and if we win those big momentum plays, that's amazing, that's going to lead into the next point, and the next point, ultimately the set. […]Words of encouragement at the end of the day can go a long way."
  • Fr. MB Olivia Grenadier saw her second collegiate start for the Buffs, totaling three kills (0e, 5att), hitting .600 and recording two blocks. Fr. S Audrey Asleson also had one block for Colorado.
  • For the Rockets, Kelsey Smith has 13 digs, and two players saw five blocks each.
...

UP NEXT
  • The Buffaloes remain at home for the final match of the Buffs Invitational on Sept. 14. Colorado's third match is against Denver, and first serve is set for 2 p.m. MT. The match will be streamed on ESPN+, and fans can follow along via live stats links on CUBuffs.com.
  • MAHONEY ON IMPROVING AND FACING DENVER: "We want to get better at every opportunity – we can always serve a little bit better. We can always pass a little bit better. We can always defend a little bit better. There [are] not going to be big swings, which is good. We want to continue to build. Denver's played 10 sets here; they're super competitive, they're really physical. They're well coached, and they're a really good challenge for us. We need to take it as such and prepare for it."

MATCH NOTES:
  • This is the first meeting between Toledo and Colorado, and CU improves to 1-0 in the series with the Rockets all-time.
  • The Buffaloes got their sixth 3-0 victory of the season and are 6-0 in three-set matches.
  • Colorado had more kills (34-23), assists (28-22), digs (43-30) and service aces (10-8) than Toledo.

I'd GUESS today's CU match is going to be delayed some as, for the 3rd straight day, the tourney match NOT featuring the Buffs is going to a 5th set, with the Toledo - Arkansas match's 5th set just getting ready to start as I type this.
