BOULDER – Colorado women's volleyball team heads to Arizona this weekend for the final two-match road weekend of the season, taking on Arizona State Friday at 2 p.m. in Tempe before heading south to Tucson to take on Arizona at noon.

The Buffaloes (14-9, 5-9 Pac-12) are coming off a split against the LA schools at home that included the second-ever defeat of USC in school history.
...

Friday's afternoon matchup will be televised on the Pac-12 Network while Sunday's match will be on the Arizona Live Stream. The Buffs return home to host Stanford next Thursday and Cal the following Sunday. They finish out their home schedule against Washington the day before Thanksgiving before closing the regular season out the Saturday following Thanksgiving in Utah.

SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS
Arizona State (13-12, 6-8 Pac-12) won an impressive five-straight conference matches against UCLA, Utah, Colorado, Cal and Stanford. Since that they dropped both matches on the road in Washington, including a sweep to the Huskies and a five-set loss in Pullman.

Iman Isanovic earned a Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honor at the end of October and leads the team with 403 kills, nearly four per set while hitting .235. She also has 29 aces this season to go along with Marta Levinska's 30. Levinska is second on the team with 281 kills. In the front row, Claire Jeter had 99 total blocks this season.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Arizona (14-11, 6-8 Pac-12) has had a roller coaster since defeating the Buffs. They were swept by Utah, then swept Stanford and Cal at home. On the swing through Washington the team was swept twice.

Sofia Maldonado Diaz, Jaelyn Hodge and Puk Stubbe all have 200 or more kills this season with Stubbe leading the way with a .241 hitting percentage and a Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honor. The team also has three players with 26 or more aces. On the defensive side, five Wildcats have 100 or more digs led by Kamaile Hiapo with 324.

I don't understand the afternoon game. Wondering if it's one of those situations where there will be lots of screaming kids?

The stream has begun.

Looks like mostly the same starting lineup, although Riddle is in for Torstenson as the defensive specialist to start the match.

A tight 1st set early turns ugly, and the Buffs lose 16-25.

(Just from live stats, looks they are going to have to find a way to serve tougher, as they only earned 3 points on their serve.)

Poor start in the second set (were down 5-9 at one point) but have come back to get it to 12-12

Great rally by the Buffs, Ewert with a couple of very quick dumps from the set. Buffs up 16-12 and ASU calls their second timeout

Close in the third. ASU goes up 11-10 with an ace and then gives it back with a serve into the net 11-11

Falling behind, sorry (stupid meeting). Close third, very close fourth. A couple of runs by ASU but Buffs up 17-16

TO ASU. Buffs up 19-16

Looks like another heartbreaker for the team, as they lose the match after a 30-32 marathon 4th set loss. (Looks like the Buffs had maybe 6 set points to force a 5th set.)

promising season comes to an end. Need the left side hitters to develop
And if none of the seniors come back for their Covid year, we will need the whole team to develop .... setter, libero, defensive specialist, middle blocker in addition to pin hitters.

Didn't we only sign two players this fall? I don't know how the scholarships work with volleyball.

Someone went on a huge rant on FB about how Jesse is the worst coach in the country and hasn't developed a single player. That he players are no better when they leave CU than when they arrived. He also said Jesse waits too long to call time outs. I do agree with that but then I remember the Pi'i Aiu years and Jesse is an improvement over that. Said Jesse is too laid back and never gets excited and that hurts the team.

I decided against engaging with this person on a public forum.

I think Jesse develops players. Whipple, Deluzio at Libero and others. To me Jill S looks better this year than before. As far as timeouts, I have no ideal why he waits. he is low key, but so was Tom osborne and he won a ton of championships. I just don't see how that matters at this level. With Parker and Clayton out it puts a hurt on CUs pins for sure. We shall see if they young ones do develop and exactly what is their ceiling. Just because you are great in high school does not mean you are going to be a great pac 12 volleyball player. The program does need to get back to the tourney and be in it consistently

I also think Jenna Ewart has gotten so much better. Deluzio has done what has been asked of her, playing setter when her position was libero. DeLuzio had a lot of time away from the game due to injury and illness and she's back to playing well. I think the 5-1 works better than the 6-2 for this team. However, the entire time is the walking wounded.

Whatever Clayton did, I hope it was worth it, because it really hurt her team. Parker is an excellent player who had grown since her freshmen year.

I agree on JIll S. She was not ready to play collegiate ball last season.

I do think Jesse waits too long for timeouts. Again it isn't nearly as long as Aiu waited.

I watch a lot of B1G volleyball because of where I live. The most laid back coach out there is the Penn State head coach. Sometimes it appears he is more interested in his clipboard. He's old fashioned and doesn't use new fangled computers. He is constantly writing on his clip board. Show no emotion.

I think we forget that CU is not willing to pay the $$$ for a name volleyball coach, just like with women's basketball.

Personally I like Jesse and he knows xxxx's and oooo's. Lee Maes is very knowledgeable on volleyball. Look at all the international stuff he does.

I learned a lot from Jesse from his virtual chalk talks last season. He knows volleyball.

I do shudder at the thought of none of the seniors taking an extra year and we are basically starting over.

i also think that while some of these kids look great in high school, sometimes their ceiling is not that high. Lauren Dorrell for example. Gotta hope the pac 12 comes through with a huge tv contract or that Cu totally changes how they fund athletics
