USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - University of Colorado senior Joe Morris got the 2013 track and field season off to a brilliant start on Saturday by breaking his CU 60-meter record at the U.S. Air Force Academy All-Comers Meet, crossing the finish in 6.57 seconds. The time is 0.06 faster than his previous school record of 6.63 which he set on January 22, 2011 in his first meet for the Buffs. Morris's time is currently the top time in the nation. With the altitude conversion it is 6.61 and is 0.03 seconds faster than a trio of runners tied at 6.64. "It feels good to have another record breaking season opener," Morris said. "The fact that it's still early shows that I still have a lot of work to do to get faster for the remainder of the season; so for now I will continue to study my technique and see how it looks on the track." Morris won the 60 at the meet and also had the fastest time in the 200, clocking a personal best time of 21.01, which is the eighth fastest time this season. The time is also the third best ever in CU history and is the fastest since the 2009 season. The 2013 season is in the very early stages, but Morris will have to keep an eye on the NCAA lists since this year there are no automatic qualifying marks. The NCAA will take the top 16 times to nationals March 8-9 in Fayetteville, Ark. Several other Buffs had good performances to start the season. Shaw Gifford was third in the 200 (21.97) and fifth in the 60 (6.92). Tyler Baker won the 400 with a time of 49.55 and also placed eighth in the 200 (22.53). Sophomore Eileen Gehring led the CU women with a pair of wins in the 200 and 400. She earned a time of 25.03 in the 200 and finished the 400 in 56.12. Lindsey Hubbard had the best time in the 800, finishing in 2:26.59. Brianne Beemer was the runner-up in the 400 (56.70) and the 60-meter hurdles (8.85). Kelsey English was the top performer for the Buffs in the field events, winning the high jump with a personal record of 5-08. English was the only jumper to clear 5-08, doing so on her final attempt at that height. She is now tied for eighth on CU's performers list with the mark. Abrianna Torres took second in the long jump. She jumped 18-05.25 and was less than 1.75 inches from the top jumper's mark of 18-07. Jason DeWitt was the top male in the field events. He was second in the high jump, clearing 6-09 and took sixth overall in the long jump (21-01.50). The Buffs officially kick off the season on Friday and Saturday, January 18-19, at the Potts Indoor Invitational at Balch Fieldhouse. It is the only indoor meet CU hosts. Admission is free.
