Moschetti news

Well.... this is the sad state of youth sports..... I don't think you can imply that he stole the money for his personal use.... seems like that they wanted to run this like a private club team rather than a public high school.... still not legal..... but it's not grand theft....

There are many people running for profit youth sports here in Philadelphia..... it's sad...

Article came out two years before he resigned. That would imply an investigation spanning over 2.5 years now. Considering he was demoted to a junior high pys ed teacher recently, not really sure it will go much further.

I didn't notice that, as they had today's date on the top. I thought it was today's news. My bad.
I did find it odd that he was on the selection committee to find his replacement.
I'd guess this has blown over, unless they're still awaiting word from the AG office.
Also would guess that the frustration of dealing with this led to his disenchantment.

Highly likely the issue played a part in him leaving.

Well this takes out the prospect of him replacing BL once he moves on. (Qb coach)

Sounds like they had a quack accountant (hadn't been licensed in 4 years). Didn't Gary Barnett take some heat for the way he handled camp money? Maybe Mike learned from him? (Just kidding folks)

I suspect this kind of thing is far more common than we would like it to be. Moschetti is a football coach, not an accountant or bookkeeper. He wants money for his program. This is a way to get it. He doesn't know the legalities of it or how it's supposed to be run, though.

Having a CPA or financial professional on the board would have helped.

That said, the "none of your business" comment when asked about where the money went was out of line.

Lots of shortcuts that shouldn't have been taken, but I don't see malice or criminal activity. I don't get the impression that Moschetti was trying to enrich himself.

Hopefully, he can pay his penance and get back into coaching.

Yeah. It sounds like really bad, slipshod accounting. Hopefully no embezzlement or anything like that. But the article did mention an accountant but that the accountant had lost his registration (I think.)

Edit: My bad. I misread the part about "CPA said the Tax ID Number had expired" part.

I didn't get the impression that embezzlement was implied. If that was going on, it changes the way I look at this. I suspect it wasn't, though. If it were, Moschetti would be in jail.

Mostly, this looks worse than it probably is.

I just think they didn't know what they were doing and/or didn't care to be "in the details"

Come on! No reporter would embellish a story like that! Never happens.

I'll bet there are hundreds, if not thousands, of youth sports teams, soccer, baseball, football, etc., that have really sketchy financial reporting. Lots of these programs use parent volunteers, etc. My daughter's soccer club was huge and I'd imagine they had a CPA. But smaller programs often don't.

Probably way more common than any of us would ever imagine.

These organizations are usually started by people who want to do good things for kids, they have the right intentions in mind. The part about controlling the money and documenting revenues and expenditures, the part about having appropriate oversight and of compiling and submitting the required reports is all the boring stuff and the stuff they don't know how or want to do.

They can start with good intentions but then things start to slip a little then a little more and a little more. With no one to call them on it then the slipping becomes normal and they stop worrying about it.

In the case of Moschetti at least it doesn't look like there was any indication of significant embezzlement or other inappropriate taking and use of funds.

That happens all over. The town of Green Mountain Falls almost had to shut down after the bookkeeper took off with something like $75,000 in town funds, not much in a big city but critical in a small town. Youth sports leagues have had their funds gambled away, churches have been left on the brink by pastors or office staff tapping into the funds.

Mike is a very good coach and he cares about kids. If he isn't back into coaching sometime in the near future it would be a loss to kids.

I just hope that he learns from this and in the future makes sure that the funds are handled or at least directly supervised by qualified and responsible people leaving him clear of any potential controversy.
