Official 2017 Coaching Carousel Thread - Zona hires Sumlin

Welcome to one of Allbuffs' most beloved and popular yearly threads, the coaching carousel.

Who can't keep his dick in his pants or his finger off the number for an escort service this season? Which school will find new funny ways to dismiss a coach for cause when they want to weasel their way out of paying his buyout? And who'll get fired for gross incompetence or merely being a bad football coach? Stay tuned to find out.

And we do have our first relatively high profile (ESSS EEEE SEEE!) vacancy already as Ole Miss, as we all know, fired Hugh Freeze. Latest report now is that A&M would be going for Dabo all guns blazing if/when Sumlin gets fired after this season as I can't see the Aggie boosters accepting another season where they pay Sumlin $5m to win 8 games (24-15 since Manziel).

Here's a write up of the current coaching situation by Pete Thamel, who believes the market will right itself this year and it could be a quieter carousel than we've become accustomed to in recent years. He seems to think that Kingsbury, Sumlin and the both Arizona schools are the best bet right now, but the buyout for Graham and Rich Rod could be an interesting test for P12 budgets.

No argument, but a $12m buyout *is* a problem for a school like ASU. Possibly big enough a problem to impede a firing.
Except with new facilities to pay the juice on they also can't afford a losing program that doesn't put fannies in seats.

Your classic "can they afford to fire him? Can they afford to not fire him?" conundrum.

If the bottom falls out schools usually always find a way to make it work, but if they're on the fence about what to do with him, depending on how this season goes, that buyout is a big argument in his favor, I'd say.

Same situation at Arizona, too. And UCLA. All these stadium projects to pay for and they can't afford to suck. But they also have expensive coaches. Main thing is to look for the windows when they'll be put to a decision of either needing to fire or renew. Basically, coaches are safe in those situations as long as there is more than 2 years left on the deal. 2 years or less and they'll get fired for poor performance.

Kind of makes you wonder about the financial situation of P12 schools and how big a problem the unsatisfying situation with P12N is for school budgets. Did some schools overextend themselves with stadium or facility projects when the new deal kicked in? Did some borrow against potential future revenues that haven't quite materialised? Most P12 schools spent on coaches pretty generously around 2012/2013, even some you wouldn't normally expect it from like the AZ schools or Wazzu. Definitely a thing to watch, I'd say. And Cal is the nation's poster child for an AD that has maneuvered itself into a financial situation that is completely FUBAR.

Yep. One thing I've thought for a long time with CU and its focus on balanced budgets and sustainability along with its philosophy on projects of maximizing efficiency (what drives revenue? what drives victories? cut out all the fluff that doesn't efficiently serve those questions)... is that CU's AD is positioned to handle it when the day comes when college sports are no longer printing money. This is true even with being very deliberate on the number of sports offered. What will fans like, is cost efficient, and offers CU a chance to compete for championships? You look at other schools and they are not operating this way.

It only gets frustrating when you aren't rewarded for trying to do it the "right way" and others find success despite taking shortcuts or get bailed out when they're in very deep ****. Playing it too fast and loose usually catches up with you one way or the other, see Ole Miss as the latest exhibit, but it'll be very interesting to see what Cal does and how they try to get out of their current situation. Deadspin recently published 2 pieces on their dire financial situation that opened my eyes on just how ****ed up it truly was.

Cal Is ****ed Because Of Its Stupid Stadium Deal

Cal is no worse off than California. When you dig into their finances, public schools and infrastructure, the whole state is in a scary place.

Relevant. Wilson is going to be a P5 coach soon. Just about any P5 school can double that salary with no problem.

Wonder what the buyout is? Is UTSA trying to get into the "coach selling" business like CSU did with McElwain?

This is a big deal. Rick George has truly been a Godsend. The best thing to happen to Colorado athletics since the early '90's.

Why would Dabo leave his gig of competing for Nattys every year at Clemson for a second tier program like aTm? Yeah, yeah, money and all that, but talk about a program that has a massively overinflated image of themselves.

Wouldn't surprise me to see Dabo act like he is interested. Don't think Clemson would have much trouble getting some boosters to step up to "match" what they think aTm is offering.

Clemson is every bit the program that A&M is and then some. That would be a step down. A big one.

And only have to seriously compete year in/year out with FSU while still being considered a major conference. If I were him, I would lever a possible job for a long term contract with a pay raise then put my head down and earn it while counting my blessings for being in such an awesome situation.
