I also thought fletch looked like a man out there too. Maybe it's just because he wasn't there down the stretch though.
Yeah, I had to double-check the roster when I saw him out there. Looked like he grew up since last year.

My concern right now is the same as it was heading into the season.

I think we have an Elite 8 frontcourt.

I think we are pairing it with an NIT backcourt.

The guards have to develop for this team to reach its potential. Last night, I thought I saw way too much of XT and Ski trying to be Spencer instead of playing their game and letting the offense come to them. XT, especially, shouldn't force penetration. Ski has shown he can be effectively wild at times.

I don't see it the same. I thought XT was very solid. He moved the ball well and when he penetrated, he was effective. Ski was... Ski. You take the good with the bad with him. Last night was the bad, but I love him on this team.

Of all the players, XT showed me the most. He's rounded into a very solid PG, IMO. Of course, it's hard to tell after one game. So he could regress against better competition.

I think this is why we need to get dom in the game and developing as soon as possible. I would rather sacrifice a loss or two out of conference so that he would be clicking come conference and tournament time. He passes the ball and rumor is he is the best perimeter defender we have.

My other worry is FT shooting in close games. Are there 5 guys I trust to be over 70% and likely to hit FTs when they matter?

onealcd - 100% agree about Dom. Also desperately need to see J-Hop & Fletch keep gaining confidence. We can't match up with certain teams with both of our guards 6'2".

Thought our guards looked tentative when driving the lane last night. A couple times XT looked like he was expecting the D to stop him instead of going to the hole strong.

It was encouraging to see XJ looking to shoot more. If he can keep that up and starting hitting, it'll stretch opposing defenses and open this offense up.

I just want to see XJ take smart shots. No more turn around 3 pointers with half the shot clock left.

The more I think about it, the game was weird. If you take out the last 10 minutes, we played a pretty efficient offensive game. When we had the game in hand, we started playing crazy ball and everyone was just throwing the ball to the hoop.

Tad has more options this year when Ski is the bad Ski. As I was watching last night I wondered if Tad didn't let some of that happen just to get Ski an opportunity to work some stuff out after having been limited in the pre-season.

Too early to say for sure, I bet Miller and Dom are the most likely given their age. DT looked good, same with Fletch and Jaron so it's tough.
I think Miller is likely to be in the 8 man rotation, we just don't have enough bigs. Having a rotation of Miller, Thomas, Gordon, and Scott is downright dirty. I'd love to see Wes playing with Miller a lot this season, the interior defense would be incredible.

We'll see how things shake out though. Dom could very easily play well enough to warrant a spot in the rotation, either way it's nice to have a roster crunch due to having too much talent.

Yep. He is going to have games like last night and unfortunately in the past we didn't have any other options.

First off, any definite opinions you get after the first game of the season are stupid. So here are my definitive opinions after the first game....

* Jelly was amazing. It's all been covered. The only criticism I have is I'd still like him to go up stronger with the ball. It's better than last year though. And this is like complaining because Kate Upton occasionally leaves the lid off the toothpaste.

* XJ - I'm not sure what you guys expect from him. I saw a guy who was put on their best player and was in his face all game. Damion Lee finished with 12 points on 4 of 14 shooting. No matter what else he did the rest of the game, that makes XJ good in my book. He added in 8 points as well. Was his shot selection perfect? No. But other than Josh, no one last night's was. I'm honestly wondering if he's getting points deducted from fans because he makes it look so easy out there.

* JHop - Same page as XJ. Did his job defensively. Took a few bad angles on D occasionally but I was impressed. Also impressed by Tad's decision to put JHop on Lee to start the game. Says quite a bit. Would have liked to see more from him on offense though. And that's about the opposite of what I expected from him last night.

* Ski - Ski gonna Ski. If I remember correctly, he was pretty solid through the first 30 minutes before going full Scrat. He was something like 2-for-4 or 2-for-5 with 10 minutes left, and then he just went insane. Honestly, I think it was Ski wanting to find his groove and waiting for the opportunity to go for it. When CU got the lead, he realized it was his time to go insane. I'm fine with it in this case. I just want him to have a good Auburn game because he tends to live in his head a little too much. I guarantee that no one is more upset with how Ski played last night than Ski.

* Wes - Occasional lapse on boxing out, and I still don't understand the bench violation he got, but he did what I hoped for. Provided D and showed a nice touch on offense. 5-for-6 from the line, and kept Josh rested on D. I absolutely love Wes.

* Fletch - I really think he's gonna be starting by conference play. You could see him finding his confidence by the end of the game. Felt horrible for him because his first two shots literally hit every part of the rim before falling out. He just has a basketball IQ that I'm not sure many other players on the team have. He sees things out there others don't, and I'm downright excited about his potential.

* XT - I wasn't as wild about him as most of you guys are. He had some really nice moves (the fast break spin & layup), but he had some real clunkers as well. There's zero excuse for him to miss that layup after Miller cleared the lane for him. Once again, I wish he'd stop freelancing on D. He's arguably our best straight up defender on the team. When he gets in a guy's face, he can shut them down (similar to Dahntay Jones in '09 with the Nugs). But when he starts trying to freelance he gets caught out of position. Don't know if it's XT or scheme, but I wish we'd shut that down. Let the kid do what he does best.

* DT - Thrilled with his performance. The points weren't there, but he lead the team in assists in the first half (4) and had another 4 rebounds in the first before finishing with 7. He did all the little things out there and if his shot starts falling (like many of us expect), he's going to be dangerous.

* Tory - Nik said it best, he's a bull in a china shop. Kid is just pure power right now. He's gonna get his 5 minutes a game this year, and probably get 3 fouls in those 5 minutes. And that's fine. Because next year (and beyond) he's going to be a force.

* Scheme wise on D I noticed two things last night - and I'm curious to see if they're one game things due to opponent or if we're changing our plans a little bit. In the past, our steal percentage has been somewhere between 150th and 250th nationally under Tad. We usually played guys straight up and didn't try to force many steals. When you have defenders like Spencer and Dre, this is (IMO) the way to go. We still have strong defenders (XJ & Wes come to mind immediately, and XT when playing straight up), but it seemed like we were going for a lot of steals last night. JHop was particularly effective in coming down to the post to double and going for the swipe. Also on post D, all of our defenders were forcing guys baseline. I don't remember that last year (although it may have been). Nik suggested this could be more of Karl's influence on our team (the old Carolina style of D).

* How many damn layups did we miss last night. I know XT missed one. Ski had 2 or 3. There were a few more as well. We gotta stop that.

* Offensive scheme wise, I was impressed. There was a play roughly five minutes in the game that was straight basketball porn. I can't remember who started it, but there was a brilliant pick & cut that freed Josh up wide open underneath to receive the pass from DT. Love seeing that. The other thing that made me giddy last night was Josh sprinting down the court. There is NO downside to this. None. It's one thing that Kenneth Faried does exceptionally well. If you sprint down court and your teammate can get you the ball cleanly it's either a fastbreak dunk or a foul and two shots (and with Josh, that's good for roughly 1.75 points right there). If they don't get you the ball, you have post position down low that makes it easier for your teammates to get you the ball. Also, there's the mental effect on your defender. They're not going to hit the offensive glass as hard because they're terrified that you're going to leak out and burn them again. I love seeing Josh do that. Tad mentioned something in the post game about how excited he is about getting Dom out there too because he says Dom is great at those types of passes. This could easily add 4-6 points a game to Josh's average. I also have to give props to the guards as there were actual post entry passes last night. XT had one that was textbook to Josh. That's great to see. With Josh we're going to have to work inside out all year (I agree with Nik on the Elite Eight front court, NIT backcourt), so our guards are going to have to get him the ball.

All in all, was last night perfect? God no. But that wasn't a scrub team we played last night - there's a decent chance they dance. And we didn't bring our A game and we beat them by 17. You have to be encouraged by that.
