Outdoor track & field - 2019 regular season results and news

With the NCAA Indoor Championships just completed this past weekend, the track team IMMEDIATELY switches to outdoor mode, with the 1st meet of the season (one of only two home meets this season - the Quiller Classic) scheduled this Friday and Saturday.

Best wishes to the men's and women's teams - hope they all stay healthy, run faster, jump longer and/ or higher and throw farther throughout the season!

As with the other "individual" sports, I plan on us using this thread to collect / report the results for and news regarding the team during the regular season, and then setting up individual Championships threads once the post-season begins (starting with the Pac 12 Championships scheduled to start May 4th).

(Note- I just largely copied the below about qualifying for NCAA preliminaries from what I wrote/ quoted in last year's outdoor T&F thread, with the main changes being updating the links to season's best to the current year's results.)

Edit- Wanted to add links to the official webpages where outdoor season bests are kept. This is important because, as from what I've read (see http://www.ustfccca.org/meets-results/ncaa-championship-qualifying-criteria#d1OTF for the full qualifying procedures.) -
  • For multi-event athletes, the top 24 marks in the country by a designated date (usually right after conference championships complete for all the teams) for each gender get to go to the NCAA championships and
  • For all other individual events, the top 48 times, distances or heights in each preliminary region (west and east) by athletes who accept entry for each event by a designated date (usually right after conference championships complete for all the teams) get to go to the NCAA preliminaries to try and qualify for the championships.
  • For the 4X100M and 4X400 meter relays, it's the Top 24 times who accept entry in each of the 2 regions that qualify for the preliminaries.
Links are-
For multi-events (National bests; since there are no multi-event marks yet as I type this in mid-March, the links are to the generic lists for all events for each gender as of now.) -
Men's Decathlon-
https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/2568/2019_NCAA_Division_I_Outdoor_Qualifying/2019/o?gender=m

Women's Heptathlon - https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/2568/2019_NCAA_Division_I_Outdoor_Qualifying/2019/o?gender=f

For other events (West region bests) -
Men's - https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/2570/2018_NCAA_Div._I_West_Outdoor_Qualifying_List/2019/o?gender=m

Women's - https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/2570/2019_NCAA_Div._I_West_Outdoor_Qualifying/2019/o?gender=f

Both genders events listed/ combined - https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/2570.html

(As I pasted this edit March 16th, 2019, the season is still very young as to athletes working towards their best marks, so it's often more helpful to look at LAST season's marks to get a ROUGH idea of what marks MIGHT be needed to qualify for regionals. Last year's marks for Western men can be found at https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/2281/2018_NCAA_Div._I_West_Outdoor_Qualifying_List/2018/o?gender=m, while the women's is at https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/2281/2018_NCAA_Div._I_West_Outdoor_Qualifying_List/2018/o?gender=f .)

Further note- The NCAA also allows a couple type of conversions be used to calculate the top marks-
  • For a few distances on the track, marks in NCAA non-standard races are converted up or down to be used for qualifying purposes. (For example- times in mile races outdoor can be converted to 1500M times.) The conversion factors for this are at http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/NCAA_Track_Event_Conversions.pdf .
  • Also, the NCAA has a SEPARATE APP (see http://www.ustfccca.org/meets-results/ncaa-championship-qualifying-criteria#d1OTF for the link) that converts all track times for events competed at altitude to official "sea level" times. (It's the converted times that show up in the above linked-to tfrrs.org top marks lists.) In general, middle distance (800M) and longer races run at altitude calculate to FASTER "sea level" times, while shorter races (400M and less) at altitude calculate to SLOWER times at sea level.

BOULDER –
The University of Colorado track and field program opens the 2019 outdoor track and field season at home Friday and Saturday in the annual Jerry Quiller Classic at Potts Field.

Friday is scheduled to begin field events at 3 p.m. with the hammer throw, javelin and triple jump for both men and women's, with the remainder of the field events and all running events scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The Buffs welcome teams from Air Force, Colorado Christian, Johnson and Wales and Valley City State along with a large number of unattached individuals from across the Front Range.

CU will compete in nearly every individual event but will not be seen in relays or the 100-meter dash this weekend. The sprinters will focus on a few events, while the combined event women are tabbed to compete across the 200, 100 hurdles and high jump. The distance squads will compete in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000 with Karina Mann, Madison Boreman and Annie Hill looking to put down fast times in the 800.

The 2nd (and larger) day of the 1st outdoor track and field meet of the season starts in a little over 2 hours.

Sounds like it was a nice rust-buster for the teams.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program took home 18 victories in the 2019 Jerry Quiller Classic this weekend at Potts Field to open the 2019 outdoor season.

Colorado won six of the men's events and 12 on the women's side, posting numerous good season-opener marks.

"Middle March our big hope is to have a meet and then to get some useful informative results from it and that's about what happened here," said head coach Mark Wetmore. "I don't think we got anything here that would end up qualifying for the NCAA Regionals, but we saw a lot of people we haven't seen in months, in some cases we saw people we haven't seen in years like Madison Boreman. Overall it was a practical, useful opener."

One of the best marks of the meet came in the women's high jump with freshman Kylee Harr clearing 1.75m (5-8.75) to place herself tied for 10th on CU's best performers list. The freshman, who also competed in the javelin, 100 hurdles and 200, cleared her first four heights on her first attempt, winning the event at 1.70 meters. She cleared the final height on her third attempt before moving on to 1.78 meters.

"That's a good jump for Kylee," said Wetmore. "Maybe that's the first mark of the year that will get into regionals."
...

The meet ran as smoothly as possible after the winter storm the Front Range dealt with Wednesday covered the track and put inches of wet snow on all the throwing areas and track.

"No doubt that the stars of the weekend are the ground guys," said Wetmore. "Think of this place on Wednesday and by Friday night we had a facility that could do the throws and track events if we needed. Those guys had 10 men on this field on Thursday and made the meet possible. As always thanks to the greatest ground guys in the country."

Colorado heads to Fort Collins next weekend to compete in the Fum McGraw Open at CSU before heading to Stanford, Texas and Greeley at the end of March.

Women in the top 10 in the initial / preseason 2019 Coaches' Association ratings***. (***Note these are based on a statistical analysis based on individual times and marks over the last couple years vs. a ranking/ poll of coaches' opinions.)

Best wishes to the 2 dozen or so individuals competing at CSU this Saturday (and per the CSU tentative schedule the hammer throwers on Friday).
(And, looks like the season gets VERY seriously underway next weekend, with I assume almost all if not all of the healthy Buffs (including 1st outdoor races of the season for those who ran at the NCAA Indoor Championships) competing in Stanford, Austin or Greeley.)

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program will send two dozen student-athletes to compete in the Fum McGraw Open this Saturday in Fort Collins.

The Buffs will focus on nearly every event 1,500 meters and shorter, with strong representation in the sprints, hurdles and throws. Last weekend CU won 18 events in the Jerry Quiller Classic.
...

Most of the CU distance squad will take the weekend off with the Stanford Invitational coming next weekend, but Cayla Seligman and Bailey Nock will both represent the Buffs in the women's 1,500.

The outdoor season picks up pace next weekend with the Buffaloes competing in three separate meets, the Texas Relays, Stanford Invitational and Tom Benich Invite in Greeley.

FORT COLLINS – The University of Colorado track and field program competed in the 2019 Fum McGraw Open, posting a pair of top-10 marks in CU history in the men's sprints Saturday.

The Buffaloes picked up four wins today, highlighted by the men's showing in the 200 and 400-meter dashes. Duane McClurkin Jr. tied his personal best of 20.89 to win the men's 200, while Aaron McCoy won the men's 400 with a time of 46.88 seconds. McClurkin Jr.'s mark remains 10th in school history, while McCoy moves into the top-10 in sixth.

McClurkin Jr.'s mark would have ranked fifth in the nation before this weekend, while McCoy's mark would've been 12th.

The other victories for CU came on the women's side in the 400 and 400 hurdles. Samantha Crosmer ran 58.47 to take the 400-meter title, while Valerie Welch led a herd of Buffaloes that placed first through third in the 400 hurdles. Welch won the event in 1:00.65 seconds, while Dani Johnson and Kylie Davis rounded out the top-three with marks of 1:01.04 and 1:01.46, respectfully.
...

The Buffaloes split across the country next week with the distance squad heading to the Stanford Invitational and the sprints and other events going to either the Texas Relays or the Tom Benich Invitational at the University of Northern Colorado.

Assume there will be a cubuffs.com preview article coming out soon, but did want to be sure to mention, since it starts pretty early tomorrow (believe 9:30 AM MT), that a BUSY weekend for the team, at 3 different meets, begins tomorrow with a couple CU heptathletes competing in the VERY competitive "2019 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays" in Austin.
(At this meet, it's only the 1st half of the multi-events competed on Wednesday, with other Buffs starting to compete on Thursday (I believe 4 Buffs, 3 women (3:30 PM MT) and 1 man (4:00 PM MT), in the 400M Hurdles prelims, and one woman's hammer thrower), with the bulk of individual events taking place Friday and Saturday.)

Best wishes to seniors Maja Wichhart-Donzo and Michaela Wenning tomorrow and Thursday!

Great and very detailed preview of all the Buffs active this week at the various meets is now available.
(Note- I was (shockingly I know!) incorrect in post #7 when I assumed almost all the Buffs would be in action this week. It seems like a few (maybe 4-5 or so) of the top distance folk (Klecker, Dressel, Jones, Hurta pop to mind) are not on the track this weekend. Hopefully positioning for a long year (maybe even competing at the U.S. Championships?) for some or all of them, and not any health issues.)

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program posted strong times across the nation in both the Texas Relays and Stanford Invitational.

Madison Boreman led a group of women in the women's 1,500 in Stanford. She placed fifth in her heat, running 4:22.70 which would've been good for third in the nation before this weekend. She was not alone as Karina Mann won her heat earlier in the day in a time of 4:24.76. Mann's time would've been fifth in the nation before this weekend. Also in the race, Olivia Brooks and Annie Hill both ran 4:31.

In the men's 1,500, freshman Gabe Fendel came out of his redshirt campaign and opened his season with a 3:45. 78 to win his section. His time, like Boreman's, would've ranked third in the nation before this weekend. Eduardo Herrera also ran in the race, running 3:50.80 to place ninth in his heat.

In the women's 5,000 invitational, Makena Morley placed seventh amongst some of the best runners in the nation. Her time of 15:43.37 would've been good for third in the nation before this weekend. Tabor Scholl raced in the women's third section in the event with Holly Bent, with Scholl taking the section win in 16:14.84. Bent ran 16:40.95 to place 17th. In San Francisco, Baylee Jones also ran the 5,000, finishing fourth in her heat in 16:51.29.

Across the nation at the Texas Relays, Gabby Scott highlighted the sprinters, jumpers and throwers with a third place finish in the women's 400 hurdle finals. Her time of 58.29 was just two-hundredths of a second off of her personal best. She will join Eriana Henderson, Dani Johnson and Valerie Welch tomorrow in the women's 4x400 relay invitational.

In the men's 4x400 prelims, Duane McClurkin Jr. anchored a strong CU relay team that ran 3:10.29 to qualify fourth for the finals.
...

Colorado returns to action tomorrow to conclude both the Mike Fanelli Track Classic and the Texas Relays. The team was scheduled to compete in the Tom Benich Invitational at Northern Colorado but the meet was moved to Sunday.

Believe this was probably the final article on this weekend's action.

Hope some folks in the Boulder area can make it out to the team's last home meet of the year later this week.

It's the Buff fans last time to see the team at a home meet, as track and field hosts Colorado Invitational 2019 Outdoor at Potts Field this Friday (hammer, javelin and triple jump) and Saturday (everything else). Looks like almost all the runners who hadn't run yet outdoors this season are scheduled to start their seaons on Saturday.

With there being more meets during this season, I haven't noticed it being as big a thing during outdoors, but I know in indoors, past top Buff distance runners often have earned qualifying marks for NCAA's at their final home meet, (assisted by the altitude conversion calculations used by the NCAA). Still, hopefully a few may get those NCAA Prelim qualifying marks at this meet.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program hosts the Colorado Invitational this Friday and Saturday at Potts Field.

The meet will feature three NCAA Division I opponents in Air Force, Colorado State and Northern Colorado. In addition, there will be 14 NCAA Division II teams, including 11 from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. In total there are 21 teams scheduled to compete and numerous other non-NCAA athletes entered.

Events begin Friday at 2 p.m. with the javelin, hammer throw and triple jump competitions. The rest of the schedule begins at 10 a.m. Saturday with the conclusion on the field events and the beginning of the track events.

The men's 1,500 will be an event to watch with Joe Klecker slated to open his outdoor season. He will be joined by John Dressel and Ryan Forsyth in the event along with numerous individuals current and former from the Division II level with sub-3:45 times. There are more than 100 athletes registered for the race with seven registered under the 3:45 mark.

A key event on the women's side will be the 800. The 800 field features a stacked amount of Buffaloes with both Mann sisters and Sage Hurta making her season debut. Also Annie Hill, Olivia Brooks and Bailey Nock all are competing in a field that features a pro with a 2:02 personal best and seven entered with times under 2:10.

...

Friday's events are free to the public, while admission will be charged at $8 per person Saturday. After this week the Buffaloes have a meet at CSU next weekend and prep for the busy California weekend after that with four meets on the West Coast including the Cardinal Classic and Mt. SAC Relays.

Recap of the big 2nd day of the meet below. Some nice results, highlighted by the aforementioned Joe Klecker finish.
A couple other most notable (probable or possible NCAA Preliminary times) results I see:
  • Junior Sage Hurta, running unattached, also earned an (altitude adjusted***) NCAA leading time (at least heading into this weekend) in the 800M. Even un-adjusted for altitude, her time (2:04.67) is near her PR (2:04.43), and indicates she could be primed for a big season (if it's not decided to have her redshirt). (She typically has concentrated on the steeple. It will be interesting to see (1) what her continuing improving speed equates to in that event and (2) if she continues to have the steeple as her primary event if she continues such strong results in the 800M, or the 1500M where she's also performed solidly in the past.)
(***My altitude converter, if still current, says her 2:04.67 time converts to 2:03.89, while the top time showing in TFRRS is currently 2:04.33. The 2:03.89 would have been the #8 time at the end of last season in the west, so should easily qualify her in that event for NCAA Preliminaries in that event if she chooses to run it.)
  • It also looks to me like senior Duane McClurkin Jr. at minimum has already put up a possible qualifying time in the 400M sprint with his 46.00 personal record time. My converter has that going up to 46.11, which still would have been 18th in the West last season, so would be in the top 24. (With such small increments, I’m sure he’ll be looking to build on this early season time, as 24th last year was only 46.30, so pretty close to his mark.)

Article on yesterday's results, highlighted by junior Joe Klecker easily earning another NCAA regional qualifying time, this time in the 5000M, as well as seniors Michaela Wenning and Maja Wichhart-Donzo having multiple personal bests to earn heptathlon scores (5,585 and 5,570 points, respectively) that could already put them on the bubble for one of the 24 spots for the NCAA Championships. (Looking at the last 3 seasons (2015-2018), looks like the points needed to finish in the top 24 for NCAA's were 5,569, 5,551 and 5,590 points, respectively.)

Release: April 18, 2019

AZUSA, Calif. – The University of Colorado track and field program concluded action at the Bryan Clay Invitational with numerous top-10 marks in the nation Friday in Azusa, Calif.

The women's heptathlon and men's 5,000 highlighted the meet, led by two top-10 heptathlon marks in CU history and a rundown for the nation's fastest time with Joe Klecker in the 5,000-meter run.

Klecker ran his only race of the weekend and found himself in a dog fight of a 5,000. The race had eight NCAA athletes, seven of which from division 1, that ran faster than the previous national-leading mark of 13:44.43. Klecker placed third among NCAA athletes in a time of 13:35.95. The NCAA winner, Gilbert Kigen of Alabama, ran 13:34.95, while Cole Rockhold of CSU ran 13:35.26. The winner of the race was Isaac Kimeli of the Olympic Running Team in a time of 13:33.47.

The other pair of huge marks came from Michaela Wenning and Maja Wichhart-Donzo in the heptathlon. Wenning posted a 250 point personal best in the heptathlon with a score of 5,595 after posting four lifetime bests and had two other marks within five centimeters of her best-ever marks. Her mark leaps her into third in school history. Wichhart-Donzo improved her best by 137 points after five personal bests and a pair of marks within two centimeters of her best. Her mark of 5,570 jumps her to fourth in school history.

Action picks up tomorrow with the sprinters and hurdlers competing at the Mt. Sac Relays while the rest of the squad competes in the Cardinal Classic at Stanford University.

In the 1st action today, 3 women Buffs went under the 14 second mark in the 100M women's hurdle prelims this morning.
(None advanced to the finals in a TOUGH Mt. Sac Relays field. Only one Buff went under 14 seconds all last (2018) season. Also, wanted to note I think for at at MINIMUM one of them, the 400M hurdles is more their specialty.)

Sounds like there were were many good to great performances today, with quite a few of the distance folks probably to certainly earning (if they hadn't already) NCAA Preliminary qualifying times, namely in the men's and women's 5K, women's 1500M and women's 800M, while others in various events had season and in some cases personal bests.
(With Sage Hurta having another great race, this time in the 1500M, be interesting to see if they continue to keep her running unattached (so she can potentially redshirt), as it looks like she could be a potential BIG Pac 12 scorer for the team, as well as being in the discussion this season as a podium contender at the NCAA Championships level.)

CALIFORNIA – The University of Colorado track and field program competed Friday in the first day of both the Mt. Sac Relays and the Cardinal Classic, posting numerous season best marks in 17 events competed.

Ryan Forsyth was the distance star Friday, running 13:38.01 to place sixth in the 5,000-meter invite section of the Cardinal Classic. John Dressel was right behind him in eighth with a time of 13:42.57, while Ethan Gonzales was second in the other section at 13:58.12, a three second personal best and his first time under the 14-minute barrier. Forsyth's time was also a three second personal best.

On the other side of the state, Duane McClurkin Jr. and Jon Maas turned heads in the Mt. Sac Relays 200 by placing second and fourth with times of 21.05 and 21.32. Maas also placed sixth in the 400 open with a time of 47.02, finishing off his sprints for the weekend with a pair of lifetime bests. McClurkin Jr. will race tomorrow in the invite section of the 400 before anchoring the men's 4x400 relay with Maas, Aaron McCoy and Kendal Smith.

One of the most impressive performances of the night came from redshirt junior Sage Hurta, who was competing unattached in the women's 1,500 invite at Bryan Clay and placed second overall with a four second lifetime best of 4:09.48. Her time is better than the world's best mark this season, though she will not hold the title as Hanna Green of Nike OTC Elite edged her for the win at 4:09.33. Her time will move her to fourth all-time in CU history.
...

The Buffaloes conclude the California weekend tomorrow with competitors in three meets, the Cardinal Classic, Mt. Sac Relays and Beach Invitational.

Looks like another race, another big (~1 second) Personal record for (officially unattached) junior Buff Sage Hurta as she comes follows up yesterday's strong 1500M at the Bryan Clay Invite with a win today in the 800M invitational college race at the Mt. Sac. relays, finishing in 2:03.46, the fastest time of both heats competed by over a second.

Gabby Scott looks to have flown in her heat of the 400M hurdles. (Her time shows as #2 in the West in the TFRRS system so far this season, and would have ended up being the #9 time in the West back in 2018. In other words, that time will EASILY qualify her for the NCAA prelims, and should also be a great sign for Pac 12's and beyond!)

Note - in the NOT so good news, senior leader Duane McClurkin Jr. was a DNF (Did not finish) in his 400M heat. Hopefully nothing serious.

Just to add for Gabby Scott- looking at the Buff record book (https://cubuffs.com/documents/2018/8/9//Women_s_Outdoor_Record_Book.pdf?id=10936), her 400M hurdle time noted above breaks a pretty old school record, which was 57.77, held by Leona Russell from 1996. (Note- In this past indoor season, she also broke another school record long held by Ms. Russell, obviously a Buff great, in the 400M sprint.)

Congrats to her!

AND, looks like the women's 4X400 (which I assume also included Ms. Scott) also went to WORK, as per the below they won their heat. The listed time at minimum gives them a bubble time for NCAA prelims. (It's showing as #10 so far this season in the West, and would have been #22 at the end of last season's qualifying period, with the top 24 qualifying for prelims.) Looks like the team, if they keep improving a bit through the rest of the season, may also have the Buff school record in its sights in THAT race by the end of the season, as they are only ~3 seconds off. (It is showing in the record book as 3:33.07, and, like the old 400M hurdle record, is from 1996. Today's relay is already the 3rd fastest in school history, behind only 2 times run by that 1996 squad.)

From Stanford, looks like senior steepler Val(erie) Constien is off to a strong start in her main race, as she runs 10:02.34 in her 1st steeple of the year (per http://www.rtspt.com/events/stanford/cardinal19/190419F061.htm), which should easily qualify her for NCAA preliminaries. That's already faster than her qualifying time last season (10:02.78) from the Pac 12 Championships, which was the 10th fastest qualifying time in the west last season. (She set a huge ~15 second PR last season at the NCAA prelims (9:47.97) leading up to a great scoring (5th place) finish at NCAA's, and based on this early season performance looks to hopefully be on pace to at minimum equal that performance this season.)

CALIFORNIA – The University of Colorado track and field program completed its California trip on a high note as senior Gabby Scott rewrote the women's 400-meter hurdle school record at the Mt. Sac Relays.

Scott finished second in the Mt. Sac Relays Invite section of the women's 400 hurdles in a time of 57.59 after winning the first section of the timed finals. Scott dropped seven-tenths of a second off her previous best to pass Leona Russell's 1996 school record of 57.77. It was Russell's indoor 400 record that Scott broke earlier this year.

Eriana Henderson was also in the invite section, finishing eighth overall in a time of 59.59 seconds. She dropped two tenths of a second off her season best and was just three tenths of a second from her personal best.

Both CU women joined forces with Valerie Welch and Dani Johnson in the women's 4x400 invitational section to finish fifth overall with a time of 3:36.20. The women won the first section of the timed final and were able to beat Georgia, Arizona and Iowa from the fast heat. Their time is the second-fastest time ever run in school history, indoor or outdoors. It beats their best mark from their school record performance indoors this season by five-hundredths of a second and is second on the outdoor list.

The Buffaloes return to action next weekend with competitors at the Jack Christianson Invitational at CSU as well as the Oregon State High Performance meet.

Obviously not track and field related, but since cross country contains many of the same athletes and coaches, thought I'd mention there's a proposal to decrease the distance for the men's NCAA cross country championships (both regionals and final) from 10K (AKA 10 kilometer) to 8K distance races. (Thanks to Flotrack (https://www.flotrack.org/articles/6456550-di-mens-xc-championships-could-soon-move-to-8k) for the article alerting me to this.)

(Per the Flotrack article- " It is not yet clear when or if the change will be made official, but from here the proposal goes to the Competition Oversight Committee to make a final determination.")

As the article states (assume they're largely pulling from the underlying NCAA committee report they link to (the cross country distance change section starts from the bottom of page 2 of http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/2018-19D1XTI_Report_March_5-7.pdf), currently all the "regular season" and conference championship races are typically 8K (with I believe a few early season races sometimes even shorter), so it sounds like the reasoning for this change is that decreasing the distance will make the distances of all the major races from beginning of the regular season to the end of the Championships consistent at 8K.
(I always find these committees interesting, as they are usually limited in number (10 attendees in this case), so I always wonder / hope they have received sufficient input from various informed sources (namely- veteran coaches and athletes) so bad short-sighted decisions aren't made. (Looking at the attendees of this committee, I'd say only Syracuse would be considered an elite cross country school, and the farthest west of the representatives were, if my geography is right, from either the Univ. of Kansas or UTEP. There would have been a more western representative, but the one absentee listed is someone who looks to work at the Pac 12 offices.)

Be interesting to see what if anything we hear from Coach Wetmore (as well as other interested Buff coaches, as well as the runners themselves), on this if/ when it becomes "law". :
  • Traditionally, the Buffs have been considered more of a long distance as opposed to middle distance school, so the extra 2K would be an advantage. However, I believe the last 2-3 years, the team has had more middle distance runners (those who generally run 1500M, etc., during track season) playing major parts, so maybe the team wouldn't be as disadvantaged for that reason if the distance was decreased.
  • I have heard some interviews with Coach Wetmore where, due to the toughness of running 10K's, he's been strongly in favor of increasing the # of gays between the NCAA regionals and championships back to 2 weeks of so. (This past year, there was only an 8 day gap between the 2 races.) Wonder if the lesser distance of the races might help him feel better if there remains only 8-9 days between the 2 NCAA championship races?
Note- if it passes, sounds like the change as proposed would NOT happen next season, but would start with the 2020 championships season.

Note 2 - The women's distance would remain unchanged at 6K.

Preview of this weekend's meet below. Great to see that Dani Jones is getting her 1st race in this season. (Was worried she might be dealing with health issues.) Hope she, and whoever else still needs to earn NCAA prelim qualifying times and marks, are able to put a great effort in what is one of the last opportunities (at least for the distance runners) where they can just concentrate on that.
(I'm sure some will also earn qualifying times at the Pac 12 Championships, but with those being in what I assume will be a TOASTY Tuscon starting May 11th, assume it will be easier to earn good times this weekend.

I am a little surprised that, at least per what I saw, no Buffs appear to be in the entries list for either of the two bigger meets over the next week that were listed on the schedule, the Oregon State High Performance meet this weekend or the Payton Jordan Invitational next Thursday.)

BOULDER –
The University of Colorado track and field program competes in the 2019 Jack Christiansen Invitational this Saturday at CSU.

Most of the Colorado athletes are coming off a difficult weekend in California, but one Buffalo will be making her season debut as Dani Jones is entered to run the 1,500-meter run. The last time Jones was on the track outdoors in a CU jersey was when she was fifth in the 1,500 at the 2017 NCAA National Championships. Since then she has added a runner-up finish in the indoor mile and the 2018 NCAA cross country individual title.

Jones will run with a large group of CU women in the 1,500. Karina Mann and Annie Hill are both entered at under 4;30, while Olivia Brooks, Holly Bent and Baylee Jones are all listed at under 4:35. Cayla Seligman, Bailey Nock, Kaleigh Kroeker and Kate Intile will all run in the race as well.

Another large focus for the Colorado women will be the 400 hurdles with five women entered to compete. Gabby Scott is fresh off her school record performance in the hurdles but will take a crack at the school record in the open 400 before she competes in the hurdles. Eriana Henderson, Valerie Welch, Dani Johnson and Kylie Davis will all compete in both hurdle races this weekend.

In the field events, Kylee Harr will compete in the high jump while Cheyenne Cheshier rounds out the jumps in both horizontal disciplines. Mariah Walker will toss the discus and shot, while Elisa Grandemange is entered in the javelin and hammer.

For the men, the 400 will be a large event with five entered to compete. Jon Maas will lead the group along with Kendal Smith, while 800 runners Jonathan Horton and Josh Ramos will drop down to work on speed. Decathlete Wyatt Rhoads will also compete on the track for the first time this season.

The 400 hurdle men of Aaron McCoy, Kellen Monestime and Nathan Hoy are all slated to compete. Monestime will also compete in the 110 hurdles. All three will join Maas in a 4x400 at the end of the meet.

Also for CU, Gabe Fendel will compete in the 800 while Eduardo Herrera and Gus Newcomb will compete in the 1,500.

In the jumps, Jeremy Cody and Giancarlo Narvarte will compete in the high jump with Gunner Rigsby in both the long and triple jumps. Tyler Sconce will throw the shot, discus and hammer with Brock Knechtel and Caleb Penner competing in the discus and hammer. Henry Carlson will also compete in the discus and javelin.

The hammer events begin at 10 a.m., while the rest of the field events and track events begin at 11 a.m.
