With the NCAA Indoor Track and Field & Cross Country Championships just completed within the last week (the later season re-scheduled from fall due to the pandemic), the track and field teams IMMEDIATELY switch to outdoor mode, with the 1st meet of the season (one of only two home meets this season - the Quiller Classic) scheduled this Friday and Saturday.

Best wishes to the men's and women's teams - hope they all stay healthy, run faster, jump longer and/ or higher and throw farther throughout the season!

As with the other "individual" sports, I plan on us using this thread to collect / report the results for and news regarding the team during the regular season, and then setting up individual Championships threads once the post-season begins (starting with the Pac 12 Championships scheduled to start May 14th).

Full Schedule
(Note- I'd say compared to ANY other Buff sport, the track and field teams' schedules are the most fluid, with it being common for meets in which the Buffs compete being added and dropped from the schedule even after it begins.):

(Note- I just largely copied the below about qualifying for NCAA preliminaries from what I wrote/ quoted in 2019's outdoor T&F thread, with the main changes being updating the links to season's best to the current year's results.)

Edit- Wanted to add links to the official webpages where outdoor season bests are kept. This is important because, as from what I've read (see http://www.ustfccca.org/meets-results/ncaa-championship-qualifying-criteria#d1OTF for the full qualifying procedures.) -
  • For multi-event athletes, the top 24 marks in the country by a designated date (usually right after conference championships complete for all the teams) for each gender get to go to the NCAA championships and
  • For all other individual events, the top 48 marks*** , distances or heights in each preliminary region (west and east) by athletes who accept entry for each event by a designated date (usually right after conference championships complete for all the teams) get to go to the NCAA preliminaries to try and qualify for the championships. (***Due to the pandemic, The NCAA initially announced only the top 32 marks in each individual event, only for 2021, would get to compete at each regional. However, on 4/29/2021 (see post #46), they announced they were reversing that change, and the normal 48 would get to compete.)
  • For the 4X100M and 4X400 meter relays, it's the Top 24 times who accept entry in each of the 2 regions that qualify for the preliminaries.
Links are-
For multi-events (National bests; since there are no multi-event marks yet as I type this in mid-March, the links are to the generic lists for all events for each gender as of now.) -
Men's Decathlon- Not available as I type this.

Women's Heptathlon - https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/3191.html#event40

For other events (West region bests) -
Men's - https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/3193/2021_NCAA_Division_I_West_Outdoor_Qualifying/2021/o?gender=m

Women's - https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/3193/2021_NCAA_Division_I_West_Outdoor_Qualifying/2021/o?gender=f

Both genders events listed/ combined - https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/3193/2021_NCAA_Division_I_West_Outdoor_Qualifying/2021/o

(As I pasted this edit March 16th, 2021, the season is still very young as to athletes working towards their best marks, so it's often more helpful to look at LAST season's marks (or with 2020 cancelled, 2019) to get a ROUGH idea of what marks MIGHT be needed to qualify for regionals. 2019's marks for Western men can be found at https://www.tfrrs.org/archived_list...st_Outdoor_Qualifying_(FINAL)/2019/o?gender=m, while the women's is at https://www.tfrrs.org/archived_list...st_Outdoor_Qualifying_(FINAL)/2019/o?gender=f .)

Further note- The NCAA also allows a couple type of conversions be used to calculate the top marks-
  • For a few distances on the track, marks in NCAA non-standard races are converted up or down to be used for qualifying purposes. (For example- times in mile races outdoor can be converted to 1500M times.) The conversion factors for this are at http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/NCAA_Track_Event_Conversions.pdf .
  • Also, the NCAA has a SEPARATE APP (see http://www.ustfccca.org/meets-results/ncaa-championship-qualifying-criteria#d1OTF for the link) that converts all track times for events competed at altitude to official "sea level" times. (It's the converted times that show up in the above linked-to tfrrs.org top marks lists.) In general, middle distance (800M) and longer races run at altitude calculate to FASTER "sea level" times, while shorter races (400M and less) at altitude calculate to SLOWER times at sea level.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program opens its 2021 outdoors season at home this Friday and Saturday for the annual Jerry Quiller Classic, ending a 650 day drought of CU outdoor track.

The event is closed to the general public, but approved families from CU track and field staff and student-athletes may attend but must wear a mask at all times and maintain a 25-foot distance from all student-athletes.

Due to a policy in the Mountain West Conference that limits the amount of meets their conference teams can compete in, the meet has condensed greatly and will run Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with all field events competed, followed by a short running day with 14 total races being competed beginning at 10 a.m. The final race, the men's 4x400, is set to start at 12:25 p.m.

Colorado is set to compete a majority of its forces that did not compete this past weekend during one of the national championships. Colorado has several redshirt seniors that will be taking to the track for the first time since the cancelation of the outdoor season last year like decathletes Wyatt Rhoads and Davis Butte in the 400, John Dressel in the 1,500 and Eriana Henderson in the 100 and 400 hurdles.

For other athletes, specifically freshman and sophomore, this will likely be their first outdoor meet in two years. Athletes like Nick Bianco in the 400 and pole vault, the heptathlon squad of Avery McMullen, Jada Green, Kara Lucyk, Elise Gillett all in the 200, Tiya Chamberlain, Kyla Christopher-Moody, Alisa Meraz-Fishbein, Sarah O'Sullivan, Rylee Robinson, Anna Shults, Whitney Valenti all in the 1,500 and many more.

Other athletes have different stories. Ronald Sayles transferred to CU months before the outdoor season was canceled, and he only had one outdoor season remaining. He has been waiting since the 2019 outdoor season to compete in a collegiate jersey. Colorado also welcomes football defensive back Mark Perry who will run the 100 meters this spring.

In total there are 15 men and 24 women that will wear the CU black and gold outdoors in competition for the first time in their career.

Live results can be followed both days at cubuffs.com/tracklive.

Almost time to toe the line, as the track races begin at the top of the hour!

(Note- the action should be interesting today from the start with the 1500M races, even with the many top Buffs who ran last week in the NCAA Championships, I assume, taking a break. It will be fun to see which of the LARGE number of Buffs on the women's side shows they're ready for a great track season, while on the men's side I just noticed John Dressel, who is, if healthy, one of the more likely Buffs to earn an NCAA berth, is in the Start List after not racing during the indoor season at all. Note that on the men's side, he's one of only two racers (the other's a promising young Buff freshman) listed as being in the race, so have to assume this is just a rust buster.)

Article after yesterday's field events-

"
BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field team took care of all the field events in the first day of the Jerry Quiller Classic, walking away with a pair of wins in the women's javelin and women's triple jump.

Only Air Force, CSU and Colorado competed in the 16 total field events Friday, with CU taking two victories on the women's side in the triple and javelin. Both events were uncontested by other schools as CU had the only two competitors in the triple and the five in the javelin. Cheyenne Cheshier won the triple with a jump of 11.31 meters (37-1.25), while Jada Green won the javelin with a toss of 42.30 meters (138-9).

Arguably the strongest performance came from graduate transfer Dominique Williams in the throws. The senior placed second in the hammer throw (56.40m | 185-0) and third in the shot put (14.42m | 47-3.75). His hammer throw is eighth in school history.

Henry Carlson also had a strong day in the throws, placing second in the javelin at 51.30 meters (168-4) and fourth in the discus at 46.75 meters (153-4). In the vertical jumps, Ryan Charles tied for second in the high jump with a clearance of 1.91m (6-3.25), while Nick Bianco cleared 4.60m (15-1) in the pole vault for fourth.

For the women, freshman Allie Routledge had a huge clearance in the high jump to finish second at 1.71m (5-7.25). Lauren Whyrick was second in the women's shot put at 12.89m (42-3.5), while Jane Powers and Elena Opp finished third and fourth in the hammer throw, respectfully.

Colorado concludes action on the track tomorrow with the 1,500-meter run beginning at 10 a.m.

Wanted to mention that it was announced a couple days ago that only the top 32 student-athletes per region (who accept their entry) in each event will reach regionals this season, down than the normal 48. (Of course in these pandemic times sacrifices need to be made; I do hope this was what the track and field community and their medical folk thought was necessary, and that it wasn't just a dictate from above from the NCAA, as it feels some of their other changes to Championships in other sports has been.)

Article after today's races-

"
BOULDER – Colorado track and field dominated Saturday's track portion of the 2021 Jerry Quiller Classic, winning 10 of the possible 13 events including all six of the women events here.

Senior Eriana Henderson kicked things off strong, winning both the women's hurdles events in dominant fashion. She won the 100 hurdles in a time of 14.02, then came back not long after and won the women's 400 hurdles in a time of 59.52, beating teammate Valerie Welch by nearly two seconds. Eight CU women ran faster than 14.9 in the 100 hurdles today.

In the sprints, Jaida Drame won the 400 in 56.57 and was second in the 200 behind Avery McMullen who ran 24.81. Kylee Harr won the 100 in 12.64 to give the CU women the sprint sweep.

For the men, Ian Gilmore beat teammate Mark Perry at the line in the men's 100 by a hundredth of a second for the win in 10.72. Tyler Williams took a pair of runner ups in the 200 and 400 as Ronald Sayles won the 400 in 47.12 for the men. Aaron McCoy finished second in the 400 hurdles in 52.54 while Nick Bianco was second in the 110 hurdles in 15.38.

The distance races kicked things off as Alisa Meraz-Fishbein took the women's 1,500 in 4:37.50 while John Dressel won the men's in 3:54.40. Jonathan Horton won the men's 800 in 1:51.92, just a hundredth of a second off his personal best and 10th-best mark in CU history.

The Buffaloes return to action next week with a meet at CSU.

I believe a traditional classic meet, the Texas Relays, are beginning today, and scheduled to run through Saturday. (For the Buffs, looks like only the sprinters and hurdlers are in Austin, with no CU distance runners or field athletes looking to be on the entry lists.)

AUSTIN, Texas – Colorado track and field senior Eriana Henderson was the lone Buff to qualify through to finals Thursday in the 93rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, finishing eighth in the 400 hurdles.

Henderson ran 59.30 to finish second in her heat behind LSU's Leah Phillips who ran 58.60. She will run in Saturday's final at 1:35 p.m. MT.

Tomorrow the Buffs will compete in just four races, the women's 100 hurdles, men's 110 hurdles, and both 4x400 relay prelims. Back in Colorado, the throws squads will compete in the javelin and hammer in the first day of the CSU-Pueblo Spank Blasing Invite.

As often happens, today's just designated for the more "dangerous" throwing events (hammer and javelin), with the rest of the meet, including all the races, scheduled to start early tomorrow (9:30 AM).

Buffs are competing in both of today's throws, with both genders having multiple hammer throwers, while one woman is hurling the javelin.

Tomorrow, looks like Buffs are competing in the
  • jumps (other than the triple jump, where no Buffs are in the start lists).
  • short hurdles (the multi-event folk)
  • women's 100M (2 Buffs, both in section 3 of 4. Note- looks like only timed finals; no prelims.)
  • women's 200M (Buffs in section 1 and 2. Again, only timed finals.)
  • shot put (multiple Buffs in both genders competing.)
  • discus (one male and multiple females)
In general, looks like the throw group is out in force down in Pueblo, while the majority (but not all) of the other events are being competed by the Multi-eventers.

AUSTIN, Texas – Colorado track and field advanced both 4x400 relays through from prelims Friday afternoon in the Texas Relays as the women finished sixth and the men fifth.

The women's squad of Valerie Welch, Eriana Henderson, Tamia Badal and Abbey Glynn ran 3:45.69 to win the second heat of the prelims and advance to finals with the sixth-best time. The men's quartet of Ronald Sayles, Aaron McCoy, Ian Gilmore and Tyler Williams finished second in their heat in a time of 3:11.06 to qualify with the fifth-best time. Both relays will compete again tomorrow in the collegiate finals.

Three Buffs also hurdled today, led by Badal's 35th place in the women's 100 hurdles in 14.20. Reese Renz finished 47th in 14.71 as Kellen Monestime ran 14.92 in the men's 110 to finish 44th.

In Colorado, the Buffs started throwing at the CSU-Pueblo Spank Blasing meet. Dominique Williams placed third in the men's hammer with a toss of 58.94 meters (193-04), good for sixth in CU history. Tyler Sconce threw 55.49 meters (182-00) to place seventh, good for 10th in school history.

Action continues tomorrow for the final days in both meets.
"

Just went in and eyeballed the results from today, and wanted to give props to the men's 4X400M relay team who, unofficially, look to me to have run the fastest CU time this century*** in running a 3:07.24 at the Texas Relays (finishing 2nd)!

Congrats to Ronald Sayles, Aaron McCoy, Ian Gilmore and Tyler Williams!

(***IF I'm reading the CU records book (https://cubuffs.com/sports/2004/2/11/track-field-records.aspx) properly, this time makes this team the 3rd fastest all-time for the Buffs, with only teams from 1994 and 1999 having faster times.)

(Of course, year to year results can vary, but back in the 2019 season, the 24th (which is the # of relay teams get a regional team invite) fastest time in the western region was 3:07.36, so this run today might be good enough for NCAA regional qualifying purposes. Although, with this still being relatively early in the season, I'm sure the team will be looking to get their time even lower, hopefully peaking at the Pac 12 Championships.)

AUSTIN, Texas – Colorado track and field put together the third-best quartet in school history Saturday afternoon at the 93rd Texas Relays here, finishing second in the collegiate division with a time of 3:07.24.

The men's team of Tyler Williams, Aaron McCoy, Kendal Smith and Ronald Sayles started the race in first through the halfway mark with Williams and McCoy running an average split of 46.6. Smith carried the baton around in 47.04 but dropped a place to Oklahoma, while Sayles finished in a split of 46.95. The mark is the third-best season 4x400 in school history and the fastest in more than two decades.

The women's team also ran into the top-10 in CU history, running 3:40.73 to finish third in the collegiate division. Valerie Welch and Eriana Henderson averaged splits of 55.13 seconds for the first half of the race, then Tamia Badal ran the third in 56.22 and Abbey Glynn carried it home in 54.26.

Henderson doubled up today as she also finished ninth in the women's 400 hurdles final in 59.03.

In Colorado, the Buffs combined events and throws squads took action in the CSU-Pueblo Spank Blasing meet. Jada Green was the highest finisher for CU, placing second in the 100 hurdles in 14.43. The other top-three mark for the women came from Avery McMullen in the long jump where her mark of 5.90 meters (19-04.25) earned her a third place finish as well as putting her seventh in the CU record books. McMullen also finished third in the 200 in 25.15.

The men's highest finish and only finish inside the top-eight came in the pole vault as Nick Bianco cleared 4.51 meters (14-09.5) to finish fifth.

Action next weekend will be a special one as the Buffs send the throws and distance squads to the newly renovated Hayward Field to compete in the Hayward Premiere.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program is spreading out this weekend, competing in three separate meets at the Hayward Premiere in Eugene, GCU Antelope Invitational in Phoenix and Doug Max Invitation in Fort Collins with action beginning Friday.

Friday's meet at the newly renovated Hayward Field will be the stadium's debut after it underwent renovations for the past few years in preparation for hosting the World Champions, now set for 2022. The Buffs will compete there in distance and throws, while some middle distance and 10k athletes head down to Phoenix to Grand Canyon where CU Hall of Famer Sara Slattery is the head coach. A number of athletes spreading across all disciplines will be on display locally at the Doug Max Invite Saturday in Fort Collins.

There are some key races to watch going on at every meet as all disciplines are in action this weekend. Sage Hurta will open her outdoor season in the 800 at GCU, while John Dressel and Eduardo Herrera highlight the men's races in the 5,000/10,000 at the Hayward Invitational.

The women at Hayward include Rachel McArthur, Micaela Degenero, Abby Nichols and Madie Boreman, running in a combo of the 1,500, 5,000, steeplechase and 10,000.

Saturday will have the Buffs in three different states with a majority in action at the Doug Max Invitational in Fort Collins across all disciplines. Throws will also compete at the Hayward Invitational, while the GCU action will just be middle distance races and then late 10,000s starting at 10:40 p.m. MT and finishing up just before midnight.

The video stream begun a bit ago for the 1st meet at the VERY renovated Hayward Field in Eugene, with the "more dangerous" field events going so far (hammer, javelin, etc.), with track action scheduled to begin at 6:30 PM MT.

GREAT run by Eduardo Herrera not only nets him a win but gives him a U.S. Olympic Trials qualifying time in the 5000M!

If I'm reading it right, his time (13:24.46) is also the 2nd fastest ever by a Buff (behind only Brent Vaughn's 13:18.46 in 2008).

Overall, looks like the Invitational 5000M races could end up being good for all 4 Buffs who ran it, as the times for the 2 women and 2 men Buffs who ran, at least using the last completed season's (2019) results, would have qualified in the top 32, which is what will be necessary to reach the NCAA preliminaries this season.

EUGENE – It didn't take more than a race for Colorado Track and Field's Eduardo Herrera to make history as he won the men's 5,000 meter run in the Hayward Premiere in 13:24.46 Friday evening here.

Herrera's mark is good for second in school history, bettering the likes of Jorge Torres, Dathan Ritzenhein, Adam Goucher, Alan Culpepper and more. What makes this feat more impressive is the fact that Herrera posted a 33-second personal best on the track today as his best collegiate 5,000 outdoors was 13:57.35.
...

The 5,000 mark is an Olympic Trials qualifying mark, the collegiate lead and makes him the third-fastest 5,000 collegiate runner since 2017.

He wasn't the only Buff entering the record books as John Dressel ran 13:36.29 to finish sixth, good for 10th in school history. That wasn't the only 10th mark in CU history today as Rachel McArthur placed fourth in the women's 5,000 in 15:53.06, edging out Abby Levene's 2014 mark. Abby Nichols finished sixth in the women's race in 15:54.90.
...

Action continues tomorrow with throws in the Hayward Premiere, while the distance squad take to the track in the middle distance and 10,000 at GCU and the rest of the team competes at CSU.

PHOENIX – Colorado track and field senior Sage Hurta made history again Saturday evening in Phoenix, lowering her own 800 school record to 2:00.62 at the GCU Antelope Invitational and etching her name in the NCAA record books.

Hurta's mark is tied for 10th in NCAA history in the women's outdoor 800 and is the fastest outdoor time in collegiate history since the 2017 NCAA Championships between record holder Raevyn Rogers of Oregon and Ohio Northern's Emily Richards in 2017.

When asked on her race and Olympic trials qualifying mark, Hurta said, "My 2:00.99 from 2019 fell on the first day of the qualifying window for the Olympic trials. As of right now that time will still be honored, so I've had the trials in my back pocket for a while now. That being said, I'm pleased to bring my time down. Today really felt like a season opener, which I think bodes well for the rest of the year."

Hurta's mark is the second Olympic Trials qualifier for the Buffs in the past two days, joining Eduardo Herrera's national-leading mark in the 5,000 from last night.
...

Colorado returns home next week to host the 2021 Colorado Invitational Friday and Saturday.

The race being referenced is from almost a month ago, but nice Q & A with Sage Hurta about her athletic and academic life at CU.
