With the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships just completed within the last week, the track and field teams IMMEDIATELY switch to outdoor mode, with the 1st meet of the season, being held in Eugene, Oregon, scheduled for this Friday and Saturday.

Best wishes to the men's and women's teams - hope they all stay healthy, run faster, jump longer and/ or higher and throw farther throughout the season!

As with the other "individual" sports, I plan on us using this thread to collect / report the results for and news regarding the team during the regular season, and then setting up individual Championships threads once the post-season begins (starting with the Pac 12 Championships scheduled to begin May 12th in Eugene).

Full Schedule (From cubuffs.com; as of 3/15/23.)
(Note- I'd say compared to ANY other Buff sport, the track and field teams' schedules are the most fluid, with it being common for meets in which the Buffs plan to compete in being added and dropped from the schedule as the season unfolds.):

(Note- I just largely copied the below about qualifying for NCAA preliminaries from what I wrote/ quoted in 2019's outdoor T&F thread, with the main changes being updating the links to season's best to the current year's results.)

2022/23 Pre-Championships Manual - https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/ch...oortf/2022-23D1XTO_PreChampionshipsManual.pdf

Edit- Wanted to add links to the official webpages where outdoor season bests are kept. This is important because, as from what I've read (see http://www.ustfccca.org/meets-results/ncaa-championship-qualifying-criteria#d1OTF or https://www.ncaa.com/championships/trackfield-outdoor/d1/road-to-the-championships for the full qualifying procedures.) -
  • For multi-event athletes, the top 24 marks in the country by a designated date (usually right after conference championships complete for all the teams) for each gender get to go to the NCAA championships and
  • For all other individual events, the top 48 marks, distances or heights in each preliminary region (west and east) by athletes who accept entry for each event by a designated date (usually right after conference championships complete for all the teams) get to go to the NCAA preliminaries to try and qualify for the championships.
  • For the 4X100M and 4X400 meter relays, it's the Top 24 times who accept entry in each of the 2 regions that qualify for the preliminaries.
Links are-
For multi-events (National bests; since there are no multi-event marks yet as I type this in mid-March, the links are to the generic lists for all events for each gender as of now.) -
Men's Decathlon - https://upload.tfrrs.org/lists/4044/2023_NCAA_Division_I_Outdoor_Qualifying#event39
Women's Heptathlon - https://upload.tfrrs.org/lists/4044/2023_NCAA_Division_I_Outdoor_Qualifying#event40

For other events (West region bests) -
Men's - https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/4163/2023_NCAA_Div_I_West_Outdoor_Qualifying_List?gender=m

Women's - https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/4163/2023_NCAA_Div_I_West_Outdoor_Qualifying_List?gender=f

Both genders events listed/ combined - https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/4163/2023_NCAA_Div_I_West_Outdoor_Qualifying_List

(As I pasted this edit March 145h, 2023, the season is still very young as to athletes working towards their best marks, so it's often more helpful to look at LAST season's marks to get a ROUGH idea of what marks MIGHT be needed to qualify for regionals. 2021's marks for Western men can be found at https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/3713/2022_NCAA_Div._I_West_Outdoor_Qualifying/2022/o?gender=m, while the women's is at

Further note- The NCAA also allows a couple type of conversions be used to calculate the top marks-
  • For a few distances on the track, marks in NCAA non-standard races are converted up or down to be used for qualifying purposes. (For example- times in mile races outdoor can be converted to 1500M times.) The conversion factors for this are at http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/NCAA_Track_Event_Conversions.pdf .
  • Also, the NCAA has a SEPARATE APP (see http://www.ustfccca.org/meets-results/ncaa-championship-qualifying-criteria#d1OTF for the link) that converts all track times for events competed at altitude to official "sea level" times. (It's the converted times that show up in the above linked-to tfrrs.org top marks lists.) In general, middle distance (800M) and longer races run at altitude calculate to FASTER "sea level" times, while shorter races (400M and less) at altitude calculate to SLOWER times at sea level.

"
BOULDER— Shaun Wicen has been named a Recruiting Coordinator and Assistant Coach for the Colorado Buffaloes Cross Country and Track & Field programs, head coach Mark Wetmore announced Wednesday.

Wicen moves over to the cross country and track & field programs after four plus years as an assistant in the Athletic Communications office, where he worked with the program in that capacity along with the volleyball and tennis programs.

"Shaun has been doing excellent work for our teams for a number of years already, and, most recently, served in an interim capacity helping with recruiting," Wetmore said. "He is intelligent, creative and highly motivated. He is an excellent fit for our teams and is already making a significant contribution."

Wicen came to Colorado from Adams State University in Alamosa, Colo., where he served as the sports information director, and also worked at Western State Colorado University in Gunnison, Colo., as an assistant sports information director.

"Thank you coach Wetmore and Coach Burroughs for the opportunity," Wicen said. "I'm excited to be a part of this championship culture and help bring more titles to Boulder."

Wicen covered two national championship cross country teams at Adams State and was named the CoSIDA Fred Stabley Sr. District 7 Blog of the Year for his work with Maricel Medina.

Preview for the meet that begins tomorrow.
(Looks like the sprinters are starting their season on Saturday, with the bulk of the field athletes also starting their season (some, especially the throwers, began last week). I assume most of the healthy distance runners will be opening their 1st races next week, with the leaders heading off to Stanford.) -

What I assume is a final schedule - https://gothunderwolves.com/documents/2023/3/5/2023_CSU_Pueblo_Spank_Blasing_Time_Schedule.pdf
(In general, action begins with the throws at 2:00 PM today, and tomorrow both field and track action begins at 11:00 AM. Note that with only sprinters competing this weekend, looks like the 1st race tomorrow involving a Buff will be at 2:00 PM. It looks like most of the field athletes are working hard from 11:00 AM.)

Article after this weekend's meet.

Looks like it ended up that many Buffs did not compete as scheduled, I assume due to the cold and windy weather in Pueblo. Especially, looks like none of the runners noted in the preview article quoted in my last post ran. Some nice results for the throwers though- looks like many are primed to comfortably exceed their past bests later in the season.

PUEBLO - The Colorado Buffaloes Track & Field program had a great showing here Friday and Saturday at the Spank Blasing Invitational.

Amanda Opp got things rolling for the Buffs Friday morning. She secured the win in the women's hammer while bettering her own fourth-best mark in CU history, throwing 58.08m (190-7). Opp also placed fifth in discus, throwing a huge personal best of 42.19m (138-5).

Another victory in the hammer throw came from Matt Ward who threw a personal best of 59.56m (195-5), over a three foot improvement. This throw bettered his own eight-best mark in CU history.

Throwing 13.22m (43-4.50), Lauren Whyrick placed fourth in the women's shot put.

Alfonso Gustavo, in his javelin debut for the Buffs, threw 54.72m (179-6) to place third in the event.

Clearing 1.65m (5-5.00), Allie Routledge was runner-up in the women's high jump. This performance is coming off of her win last week at the Oregon Preview.

In the women's long jump, Kara Lucyk jumped 5.67m (18-7.25) to take second place.

The Buffs will continue the outdoor season next weekend at the Stanford Invitational.

I believe it's the first BUSY regular season weeks of the year, as the Buffs are scheduled to be at 3 separate meets. It looks like a few of the top sprinters and hurdlers will be in Austin for the venerable Texas Relays, looks like most of the top distance folk who are healthy will be opening their outside season at Stanford for their loaded Invitational, and most of the rest I assume will be at CSU for their Jack Christiansen Invitational.

Some links and info I've found so far are below.

  • Then, Saturday afternoon would be the finals for the 100M, 100M hurdles and 4X400M relays. (The relays, which look to be a major emphasis for the Buffs at this meet, begin at 3:05 PM MT, if the men and/ or women make the finals.)

BOULDER - The University of Colorado track and field program will compete in four meets across three states starting Thursday with athletes competing until Saturday.

The Buffs will begin the week in Austin on Thursday at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays where CU sprinters will compete and the meet will continue until Saturday. On Friday, throwers will begin to compete at the Jack Christiansen Invitational hosted by Colorado State while distance runners will start running at the Stanford Invitational. Both meets will run through Saturday as well. Several sprinters will also compete at the Bobcat Invitational hosted by Texas State on Friday and Saturday.

Emma Pollack, Reese Renz, and Abbey Glynn will get things going Thursday running in the women's 400 hurdles followed by Garrett Nelson in the men's 400 hurdles.

Friday's action will separate between four meets with throwers going to Fort Collins to compete in the Jack Christiansen Invitational, sprinters at the Texas Relays and Bobcat Invitational and distance runners beginning competition at the Stanford Invitational.

CU will have two teams of sprinters in the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay Friday. The Buffs will also have four women throwing in the hammer throw Friday afternoon including Gya'ni Sami who broke the weight throw school record indoors. The night will be capped at Stanford with athletes competing in the 10,000-meter run with the goal of hitting west preliminary qualifying marks.

Events will continue and conclude at all four meets Saturday. Throwers will finish up at the Jack Christiansen Invitational and sprinters will compete in final events at the Texas Relays and Bobcat Invitational. At Stanford, distance runners will be in the 800-meter run including Isaiah Givens, the current mile record holder in the CU history books.

STANFORD, Calif. - The Buffaloes had a busy day Friday, competing at four different meets across three time zones and states.

Colorado had representatives at the Bobcat Invitational, the Texas Relays, the Jack Christiansen Invitational and capped off the day with the distance runners at the Stanford Invitational.

Isaiah Givens placed second in his CU 1500-meter debut at the Stanford Invitational. He ran a time of 3:41.48 and now holds the seventh-best mark in CU history. In the men's 10k, Austin Vancil placed fifteenth, running 28:24.72. Charlie Sweeney (28:28.05), James Overberg (28:38.95), and Jace Aschbrenner (28:46.76) all ran personal bests.

On the women's side, India Johnson ran a 32:38.36 and placed eleventh in the women's 10k. Her time was a personal best and is the fifth-best mark in CU history. Kaitlyn Barthell also crossed the finish in the 10k with a new personal best of 33:31.82. Ella Baran and Bailey Hertenstein competed in the women's 1500-meters. Baran placed eighth with a new personal best (4:18.64), while Hertenstein clocked a 4:19.33 to place ninth.

All of these athletes should be good to make NCAA regionals with these marks.

Friday marked the second day of the Texas Relays. CU's men's 4x400 (Tyler Williams, Ian Gilmore, Garrett Nelson, and James Milholen) placed third, running a 3:06.12. The team was assisted by a huge anchor leg from Milholen. Colorado's time was the best in its nine-team heat and qualified third-overall for Saturday's final. The team's time is the fastest time even ran by a Buffs 4x400 team in Austin as well as the fifth-best mark in CU history.

At the Jack Christiansen Invitational, Tyler Sconce and Ames Newman teamed up to place first and second in the men's hammer. Sconce took the win with a throw of 57.77m. Newman took second, throwing 47.79m, a new personal best. Amanda Opp threw 55.97m to place second in the women's hammer.

Garrett Nelson would also place fourth in the men's 400 hurdles, running 52.57 at the Bobcat Invitational.

The Buffs will continue competing tomorrow at all four meets.

EDIT - Just wanted to mention the "Front Range Open" noted in the article as a meet coming up this weekend may not be a meet anymore, at least this year. (It's no longer on the CU official schedule, and even the host in prior years (the AFA) isn't showing it on their schedule. Air Force is showing their only action at a Northern Colorado hosted meet. Wonder if some Buffs may end up there?)

The team heads down a ways down Highway 93 to compete at Mines this weekend. As is usual for these types of meets, looks like tomorrow afternoon (beginning at 3:00) just has a few field events scheduled (long jump, javelin and shot put), with everything else scheduled for Saturday. That day finds field action scheduled to begin at 10:30 AM, while racing on the track begins at 1:30 PM.

Just from QUICKLY going through the entries (which can be seen in the live results link below), looks like many but not all of the sprinters and field athletes are competing, while just a few of the (generally younger) distance Buffs are competing. (Next weekend, where the Buffs are scheduled to compete in a couple LARGE meets in So. Cal., is usually one of if not the key weekends of the regular season every year for the whole team. And, the distance folk also have a potential huge weekend meet in Stanford the weekend after.)

Another meet day!
(Unofficially, looks like a nice start already as, in the one event showing completed in live results, the women's hammer, Buffs are showing as having finished 1-2-3. Also looks like a PR for winner Jane Powers, with her throw moving her up to 5th (up from 7th) in the Buffs' all-time list.)
