BOULDER — With the regular season meets complete, the University of Colorado cross country teams will turn their focus to the postseason, starting this Friday, October 29, at the 2021 Pac-12 Championships.

Utah will host the meet this year at the Regional Athletic Complex in Salt Lake City, Utah. While not a ticketed event, parking will cost $10 per car, if using lots inside the Regional Athletic Complex. Cash or credit card is accepted. Parking for fans can be found by entering either the North or South complex entrances, off of Rose Park Lane. The West Lot on Rose Park Lane is designated for team and staff parking only and requires a parking pass.

The men's 8-kilometer race will start at approximately 10:10 a.m. and the women's 6k race will follow at 11:10 a.m. Awards ceremonies will follow the women's race at 12 p.m.

The course is fairly flat, basically seven soccer fields put together. According to head coach Mark Wetmore, it is the flattest course he has ever seen and will "basically be a track meet."

"We like some challenges, we like some puzzles to figure out," Wetmore added. "Every team will dream up their own secret strategy. While the elevation might be a bit of an advantage to us, the nature of the terrane is a little bit of a disadvantage because we are training fairly slow up here. It might help some of the speedier, more tracky teams from lower elevations."

Since joining the Pac-12 Conference in 2011, no team has seen the success at this meet that the Buffaloes have. The Colorado men have won seven titles, which includes the first six (2011-16, '19) and the women have won the team crown four times (2011, 2015-17). Stanford ranks second behind CU with five combined titles, three for the men (2017-19) and two for the women (2019-20).

The Buffaloes are the highest-ranked team on each side of the USTFCCCA Division I Coaches Polls heading into the races. Colorado's men jumped up from seventh to third overall after a second-place finish at NCAA Pre-Nationals on October 15, while the women moved up from fifth to fourth with their win at the same meet.

Competition in the Pac-12 is always high and this year is no different. Besides the Buffs, there are three other ranked teams in each poll. In the men's poll, Stanford is fourth while Oregon is 12th and Washington is 26th. The women are followed by No. 8 Utah, No. 18 Washington and No. 23 Stanford. Additionally, Oregon and Oregon State are both receiving votes in the women's poll.

Colorado has earned its rankings this season with strong performances at the Cowboy Jamboree and NCAA Pre-Nationals. The women have won both of those meets while the men placed third at the Cowboy Jamboree (after a tiebreaker) and were second at pre-nats (winning the tie-breaker).

Those finishes have put the Buffs in contention for another pair of team titles but team titles are not won without several solid runners on a team. CU has quite a few on those on both teams.

Following the conference championships, both rosters will be cut to seven before the NCAA Mountain Region Championships, November 12, in Provo, Utah, and the NCAA Championships, November 20, in Tallahassee, Fla.

PAC-12 NETWORK: This will be the fifth straight year the Pac-12 Network will broadcast the championship live on the main network as well as its six regional networks. The events will also be available to stream live for authenticated subscribers via the Pac-12 Now app and Pac-12.com. Jim Watson will handle the play-by-play, while Tim Feuer will serve as the color analyst.

RESULTS: Live results will be available at https://finishedresults.com/meets/3428 and final results will be posted at both CUBuffs.com and https://pac-12.com/cross-country/championships-2021.

The men were in 1st place at the 1st (2K) checkmark, but it's still a pretty big pack. (Looks like the broadcast froze for a moment, and they went to ads.)

Still looking pretty good for the Buffs at the halfway point,, with CU having the most runners (7) in the lead group, but Stanford VERY close in points..

At the 6K mark, it's VERY close between the Buffs and Stanford.

Individually, Herrera has taken the lead trying to take the legs out of some of the stronger kickers, and a lead group of 6 that has broken away.

Unofficially, CU looks to be the solid WINNER in the men's race, showing with 6 of the top 13 finishers, led by Eduardo Herrera in 3rd. As I type this, live results have them at 39 points, ahead of Stanford (52) and Washington (64). (Not sure if all scores are in yet.)

Way to go BUFFS!!!

And the women's race broadcast has begun, and it's around 7 minutes unitl the start.

Re the men, the results I noted in the above post are now final, with the team comfortably in 1st.

The women's race has begun. Looks like Stanford has been told to take the pace out quick.

It's Stanford, Colorado and Utah at the 1st (2K) checkpoint with only 19 points difference between 1st and 3rd, but still lots of big groups, so the scores don't mean much. Still all 10 Buffs within 4 seconds of the lead.

The Buffs now showing up 24 points over Utah at the 4K point.

Both Covert and Nichols in a lead group of 3 that may determine the individual winner. (Former Buff and new Ute Venters is the other one in the top 3.)

The Buff women end up STRONG, with 4 in the top 5!

Congrats to Abby Nichols for the win and Emily Covert for 2nd!!!

In the team race, points are still tabulating, but looks like the Buffs should show around 25 points, easily ahead of the host Utes, who are showing at 52.

SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Colorado cross country teams swept the men's and women's team titles on Friday at the Regional Athletic Complete in Salt Lake City at the 2021 Pac-12 Conference Championships, recording the fourth sweep for the Buffs since joining the league in 2011.

"Right now we're telling them to enjoy it, have fun and back to work tomorrow," head coach Mark Wetmore said.

This is the eighth Pac-12 team title for the third-ranked CU men as they defeated No. 4 Stanford, 39-52. They previously won six straight titles (2011-2016) and then the 2019 championship. The No. 4 CU women have now won five championships in the Pac-12 as they defeated No. 8 Utah, 24-52. Before today, they won titles in 2011 and then three straight from 2015-17.

Not to be outdone, Abby Nichols took home the individual crown in the women's race, becoming the second CU female to win a Pac-12 cross country title. Dani Jones is the only other female to win an individual Pac-12 title and did it twice (2017 and 18).
...

PAC-12 NOTES: Since joining the Pac-12 Conference, CU has won at least one team or one individual title in the last 11 years … CU has won 13 of 22 team cross country team championships since joining the Pac-12 in 2011 (59.1%) … The Buffs have also won five individual titles, all in the last five years … Dani Jones won back-to-back women's titles (2017-18) and in 2019 Joe Klecker won the men's title. Eduardo Herrera was the men's champion in 2020 and Abby Nichols is the 2021 women's champ … CU's men have now won 30 overall conference cross country championships and the women have captured 20 … Of those 50, 36 have been under head coach Mark Wetmore … His men won 12 titles in the Big 12, while the women won 11 before joining the Pac-12 … His men have won 20 overall cross country titles and the women have won 16 … This is also the 15th time Wetmore has led his teams to a conference sweep.

UP NEXT: The Buffaloes continue the postseason at the NCAA Mountain Region Championship, which will take them back to the state of Utah in two weeks on November 12. BYU will host the meet in Provo. The women will race their 6k first at 11 a.m., while the men will bump up to the 10k and will run at 12 p.m. The top two teams automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships.

NEW ORLEANS — After winning the 2021 Pac-12 Conference women's individual title on October 29, University of Colorado runner Abby Nichols has been named the USTFCCCA Co-Women's National Athlete of the Week.

Nichols ran a very smart, patient race at the Regional Athletic Complex in Salt Lake City, Utah, which was an extremely flat 6-kilometer course set up on seven soccer fields. Along with her teammate, Emily Covert, Nichols and Utah's Emily Venters pulled away from the rest of the field with about 1500-meters left to race. Nichols made her final move with about 1k left, putting distance between her and the other two and just kept adding more space between them until she crossed the finish in 20:25.4.

SAN FRANCISCO – After winning the individual 2021 Pac-12 Conference cross country title on October 29, Colorado's Abby Nichols has been named the Pac-12 Women's Athlete of the Year.

In addition, freshman Hannah Miniutti was named the Pac-12 Women's Freshman of the Year as the highest finishing true freshman in the race. Colorado Head Coach Mark Wetmore was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for leading the men and the women to the team championships as well as the Buffaloes swept the event for the fourth time in 11 years. These are the 12th and 13th Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors, respectively, for Wetmore, and are the 33rd and 34th times, respectively, he has been named the conference coach of the year.

Nichols won the 6-kilometer women's race on October 29, at the Regional Athletic Complex in Salt Lake City in 20:25.4, which was 11 seconds faster than the runner-up, her teammate Emily Covert, who finished in 20:36.7. Earlier this week Nichols was named the USTFCCCA Co-National Women's Athlete of the Week for her strong performance.

Miniutti crossed the finish 12th overall in 21:04.9 and was CU's fifth scorer to give the Buffaloes a score of 24 points, the fifth-lowest score in the conference meet since its inception in 1986.

All five of CU's scorers earned a spot on one of the two All-Pac-12 teams. Nichols and Covert, along with India Johnson and Rachel McArthur, were selected to the first team. Johnson finished fourth, while McArthur was fifth. Miniutti's finish earned her a spot on the second team.

The men recorded 39 points to win their eighth Pac-12 title and were led by Eduardo Herrera's third-place finish. Herrera, along with Austin Vancil and Andrew Kent, were named to the first team. Vancil placed sixth overall and Kent finished seventh.

The men also had three on the second team. Charlie Sweeney finished 11th, Brendan Fraser placed 12th and Stephen Jones was 13th.

All-Pac-12 teams are determined by an athlete's placing at the Pac-12 Championship. First team members include the first through seventh place finishers, while those who place eighth through 14th earn a position on the second team.

The NCAA Mountain Region Championships are up next for Colorado at Timpanogos Golf Club in Provo, Utah, on November 12. The women's 6k race is scheduled for 11 a.m. and the men's 10k race is set for 12 p.m.
