Pro Track and Field Buffs (& current Buffs in pro races)- 2020 news and highlights

Had heard about this, but didn't post anything initially since I didn't know if they had done everything necessary to make the times official***, but sounds like the 4 minute mile barrier has finally gone down on Colorado soil, and 1 of the 2 who beat that time was recent Buff grad Joe Klecker. (Recent Wisconsin grad and new On teammate Olliver Hoare won the race in 3:56:8, while Mr. Klecker ran 3:58:4. Impressive range for the Buff grad, who I believe will probably be running longer distances when it comes to major races and things like trying to make an Olympic team. Mr. Hoare, meanwhile, probably (at least based on his collegiate career) will primarily be a 1500M/ mile runner.)

Congrats to Mr. Klecker and the On team of which he is now part!

(***I'm still not 100% sure the times will count in record books, but am assuming they may be official since the article linked to below do mention the times were "certified". Did want to note that there was a fun twitter conversation for awhile mentioning that another former Buff great, Jorge Torres, may have unofficially run under 4:00 in Boulder during a workout back in his prime (assume late 1990's/ early 2000's), but that was not part of any official race, so doesn't count.)

No runner had ever run a mile in less than four minutes in the state of Colorado—until now.

In a certified intrasquad time trial on Monday, August 3, Olli Hoare and Joe Klecker, of the newly formed On Athletics Club, became the first two people to ever run a sub-four-minute mile in Colorado, finishing in 3:56:8 and 3:58:4, respectively. This time trial came after only a month of team workouts for the newest pro running group.

Klecker—a standout at the University of Colorado-Boulder, who took second at the 2019 NCAA cross country championships—was the first to sign with the team earlier this summer. On worked to set up the new group around Klecker, considering his input on where the team should be based, who should be the coach, and who else should be on the team.

When giving info on Mr. Klecker's new pro contract and team in my last prior post, forgot to mention another big CU connection. His new coach (and the overall coach of the On Team) is #ForeverBuff great Dathan Ritzenhein (nickname Ritz), who officially retired as a pro runner withing the last few months.

More on his becoming the coach of this new team can be found at the article linked to in the below tweet.

A couple of things I saw on Instagram regarding pro running Buffs:

1st, BIG congrats to recent grad and distance runner Makena Morley who, after previously announcing a week or so ago she was joining a training group in Idaho, has now announced she has received her 1st pro contract, with shoe and apparel company ASICS!

Also, I've seen a few things which indicate at least a few of the pro running Buffs are going to be in action this Saturday evening in Nashville, many racing in their 1st independent (non- team only) races since the pandemic began,at the annual Music City Distance Carnival. At minimum, I saw Emma Coburn posted on Instagram she's racing there in the 1500M. Dani Jones says she's soon racing her 1st 5000M in awhile, but doesn't say where- I'd GUESS it might be at this meet? And, in an article I linked to in an earlier post about his joining his new team and sponsor On, it also sounded like Joe Klecker may also be toeing the starting line in Nashville.

The meet's website is https://runmcdc.org/ . From the schedule tab on that page, looks like the meet is starting at 5:30 PM Nashville (CT), so 4:30 MT.

Someone (no idea what if any affiliation they have to the meet) answered a question to the Emma Coburn Instagram post about live coverage of the races, and they said to go to the website I noted above within the next few days for, I assume, a link, and that coverage will be on Facebook Live.

Found the Live Results Link (thanks to letsrun.com) for tomorrow's Music City Distance Carnival in Nashville, and it has the entries list with times for the various races - https://live.pttiming.com/?mid=2009

Sorry in advance if I'm missing anyone, but from just eyeballing the entries, #ForeverBuffs whose names are familiar to me and their races tomorrow are (in order of race, all times converted to Mountain Time):

Men's 1500M (Heat 1, 7:15 P MT) - Joe Klecker and Nick Harris
Women's 1500M (Heat 1, 7:35 P MT) - Emma Coburn
Women's 5000M (8:30 PM MT) - Valerie Constien, Maddie Alm, Sara Sutherland, MacKenzie Caldwell

It's a few hours away from when the #ForeverBuffs start racing, but wanted to mention the Live Results page I provided a link to above also has a link to live stream video coverage of the races, with the broadcast scheduled to start in a few minutes (4:15 PM MT).

The 1st Buffs are set to start racing here in a few minutes, starting with the men's 1500M.

Looks like there were some nice results for the #ForeverBuffs who raced yesterday (See below Instagrams for more detail on Mr. Klecker and Ms. Coburn.)-
  • In the men's 1500M, Joe Klecker earned a new personal record (PR).
  • There was also a PR for Emma Coburn in the women's 1500M.
  • In the women's 5000M, Sarah Sutherland and Maddie Alm were the top Buff finishers in 3rd and 4th places, while MacKenzie Caldwell earned a PR and finished 8th. (Hopefully, Ms. Sutherland, who is one of few pros coached by CU Coaches Wetmore and Burroughs, felt somewhat like a winner just being able to race, as I believe this was her 1st official race in quite awhile after, I believe, missing most if not all of 2019 due to injury.)

(As to next races, I believe Ms. Coburn mentioned she'll be in Southern California, at I believe an (Under Armour sponsored) Sunset Tour meet. Can't remember which of those tour stops she's planning on racing (I assume possibly with teammates such as fellow #ForeverBuff Dani Jones), but it looks like, per Flotrack (https://www.flotrack.org/events), there are Sunset series meets both this coming Saturday (8/22) and the one after (the 29th).)

From information posted by Fllotrack (which is streaming the event, I assume for its premium ($) subscribers only), looks like many of the #ForeverBuffs who raced this past Saturday in Indiana have now moved onto California to take part in this Saturday evening's Under Armour Sunset Tour event, with Dani Jones also joining the fray in racing what I believe may be her 1st official outdoor 5000M race since she overcame a 2019 shortened outdoor season to win the 2019 NCAA Championship at that distance. (Interesting to me that, assume somehow due to the Pandemic (crowd control???), the event is currently described by Flotrack as being head at "an undisclosed location in California".)

The 2nd event in the Under Armour Sunset Tour is this Saturday evening, with the 1st race scheduled to start at 9:30 PM MT. If I'm catching them all in the entries list, there are 3 #ForeverBuffs (all on the women' side) planning on racing. (As with last Saturday's event, this one is listed as taking place "in a secret location in California".)

Best wishes to all!

(Not sure, but would assume the plan may be (???) to have, like in last week's races, live behind the scenes coverage (interviews, etc.) provided by the sponsor available at their Instagram account - https://www.instagram.com/soundrunning/?hl=en . )

From the entries list linked to above, the #ForeverBuffs racing are (times converted to Mountain Time in parantheses)-
Women's 1500M (9:30 PM MT) - Dani Jones, Sara Sutherland
Women's 10000M (9:45 PM MT) - Makena Morley (Believe this will be her debut official race as a pro.?.)
(The 3rd/ last race of the evening is a men's 10000M scheduled to start at 10:25 PM MT. There are no Buffs or Buff alums entered in that one that i can see.)

An older Buff athlete (at this point, "older" means pretty much my age) putting in GREAT work!

Dan King never knew he was a miler, but he found a silver lining during the coronavirus pandemic. With most races canceled, he focused his attention on the event, and now he has an age-group world record to show for it.

King, 61, of Boulder, Colorado, ran 4:49.08 on August 29 at South Carolina TrackFest in Columbia, bettering the previous world record for the 60–64 age group, 4:51.85, set by Tony McManus of New Zealand in 2012. The previous American record was 4:53.01, run by Nolan Shaheed, also in 2012.

Congrats to #ForeverBuff Makena Morley, who was the women's race winner (and finished 2nd overall) yesterday at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Half Marathon! (Believe this may be her 1st race win as a pro (she is sponsored by ASICS and runs with the Idaho Distance Project).)

BIG congrats to #ForeverBuff great Dani Jones on earning her 1st major pro contract, joining fellow Buff greats Jenny Simpson and Emma Coburn in being sponsored by New Balance!!!
