I will be adding more detail for all the great racing that will be occurring for the top performing Buffs, but wanted to quickly start this thread now, as a couple #ForeverBuffs have, I believe, their 1st races of the year.

Also want to note, for the top of the top (World-level) Buffs, the dates they will already have circled in their calendars are the 2022 U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships, scheduled for June 23rd-26th, with the few U.S. qualifiers from that going onto to the World Championships, scheduled for July 15th-24th. Both of those meets this year are scheduled to be in Eugene, Oregon.

As mentioned in the OP, a couple #ForeverBuffs are scheduled to be in action today, with them both in New York to participate indoors at the historic (this is the 114th) Millrose Games.

Coverage is scheduled to be on NBC (NOW) from 12:30 PM MT - 2:30 PM MT. (I believe it's noted it's also available on the NBC sports app.)

The Buffs I see from a QUICK perusal (sorry if I'm missing anyone) are:
  • Dani Jones in the 3000M, scheduled to begin at 1:04 PM MT.
  • Sage Hurta in the Women's Wanamaker Mile, scheduled to begin at 2:05 PM MT, followed quickly by
  • Dani Jones is also listed as racing in the 800M at 2:14 PM MT. (Don't know if she'll be able to seriously compete in 2 races that close together, so it might have been an either/ or situation where she and her coach weren't sure which race she'd do? Or, maybe she's a pacemaker?)

Before I forget, just noticed the 1st outdoor track meet I have found for 2022 that includes Buffs is on tap for Saturday, March 5th, with MANY #ForeverBuffs scheduled to be on track for the 1st time this season at "The 10s" 10,000 (and one 1500M) meter races being organized by soundrunning. The evident goal(s) of these races (based on the race titles) is for runners to possibly earn U.S. World Championship trials and, ideally, World Championships standards. This meet is at San Juan Capistrano in Southern Cal.

Best wishes to all!

Meet homepage (with current entries listed) is at https://www.soundrunning.run/ten

#ForeverBuff names I recognize (sorry if I'm missing anyone) listed as competing so far:

7:20pm (assume 8:3-20 PM MT) - Women’s U.S. Champs Qualifier race includes Mackenzie Caldwell,

8:40pm (assume 9:40 PM MT) - Women’s World Champs Qualifier includes Sara Vaughn, Maddie Alm and Carrie Verdon, and

9:15pm (assume 10:15 PM MT)- Men’s World Champs Qualifier includes John Dressel.

Edit - Last year's premiere races are available to stream at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFe2g1SrVD7OEzlsta23X7g/featured , so hopefully maybe this year's races will also be streamed there (or somewhere else).

Just wanted to mention the races I noted in the last post above, scheduled for today, look to have been moved to tomorrow.

Figured I'd better awaken this thread, as the outdoor season is starting to get serious.

1st, looking back to last week, BIG congrats to Sage Hurta, who overcame injury and a bout of Covid to break the 2:00 mark in the 800M for the 1st time in her 1st outdoor race of the year!

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Then, looking forward to "The Trackmeet" being contested in Southern California this Friday evening (5/6), I see a half dozen or so #Foreverbuffs in the list of entries (https://www.soundrunning.run/trackmeet):

7:22 PM MT - Women's top section of the 1500M - The aforementioned Sage Hurta

7:40 PM MT - Women's section 2 of the 5000M - Tabor Scholl

8:20 PM MT - Women's (top) section 1 of the 5000M - Maddie Alm and Carrie Verdon

8:40 PM MT - Men's section 1 of the 5000M - Joe Klecker

9:35 PM MT - Men's 10000M - John Dressel

(Nice that they look to give the majority of the revenues to the athletes, as they say on the page that of the $5.99 received per view, "$4 of your PPV ticket price is evenly split across the top men's and women's heats.".)

A couple #ForeverBuffs are in the starting lineup for the women's 1500M at tonight's USATF Distance Classic being held at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut , CA. The 2 are Emma Coburn and Dani Jones. the 1500M isn't Ms. Coburn's main distance (she's a steepler), but it will be fun to see how she runs as she's hardly raced (if at all?) since the Olympics last summer.

Looks like they're both in the fast heat, with the women's 1500M's scheduled to begin around 9:05 PM MT.

In the article from 2 days ago after the 1st day of the NCAA prelims (https://cubuffs.com/news/2022/5/25/track-and-field-400-meter-athletes-advance-to-quarterfinals.aspx), it included a note that some #ForeverBuffs are entered to toe the line this evening at the U.S. 10000M Championships: (The women's race is scheduled to start at 8:30 PM MT, with the men following at 9:15 PM MT.)

"
...

CU ALUMNI NOTE
Colorado will have four alums competing at the USATF 10,000 Championships Friday evening in Eugene. Olympian Joe Klecker will look to continue his USA career for the men while Makena Morley, Carrie Verdon and Maddie Alm will all compete on the women's side. The top-three finishers that all have the World Athletics standard will compete for Team USA at the 2022 World Track and Field Championships in July in Eugene. Klecker already has the needed standard to compete at the World Championships.
...
"

As is also noted in the quote above, the top 3 finishers in the men's and women's races may*** be chosen to represent the country at this July's World Championships.
***Note- To actually qualify, rules require that a country's selections also need to either have attained the World's qualifying standard time or be ranked high enough in the International rankings (although it seems the U.S. always seems to just require the time standard?), As of now, I know that Joe Klecker, an Olympian in the event last year, already has earned the standard this year, while I don't believe the 3 #ForeverBuff women have obtained it yet, Of course, with the talent in the U.S., one would think anyone finishing in the top 3 would need to get the standard in the U.S. Championship races to finish so high, but sometimes these Championship races turn into tactical affairs. (Per https://olympics.com/en/news/world-athletics-championships-2022-qualifying-entry-standards-oregon , looks like the Worlds' standard for men is 27:28, while it's 31:25 for the women. Bummer that Niwot native Elise Cranny, who competed collegiately at Stanford and would have been a favorite to qualify, and probably win tonight's race, has announced she's had to scratch.)

Best wishes to the Buffs!

__________________________________________________________________________

Tonight's 10000M races are being held in conjunction with the Prefontaine Classic, which is always the lone U.S. Diamond League stop, with many of the top athletes from around the world competing. The Pre is being contested tonight and tomorrow. (Always an elite meet, assume there may even be more stars than normal In Eugene this year, as the elites may want to get another close look at where they'll be competing at the World Championships this July, also in Eugene. (Believe I've read that this will be the 1st time the World Championships have ever been held in the U.S.))

Looking at the live results link above, there are 3 #ForeverBuff women competing in various races during the Pre:

  • Tonight at 9:55 PM MT, Dani Jones is running in the 2 mile race. (Note that this is not a Diamond League points race, but does have a STRONG world class field.)
  • Tomorrow at 3:06 PM MT, Sage Hurta is competing in the 800M.
  • Then, at 3:14 PM MT, Emma Coburn entered to race in, I believe, her 1st 3000M steeplechase race since the Olympics,
Note- wanted to mention that they actually moved some field events from tomorrow to tonight due to the weather forecast for tomorrow, so hope Ms's. Hurta and Coburn have good grippy shoes, and take to the water like ducks!

Video - Ms. Jones' race will only be viewable through the USATF+ link I provided above (again, premium ($) subscription required). Tomorrow's main part of the meet will be shown on NBC, with coverage scheduled from 2:30 - 4:30 PM MT. The meet will also be streamable at that time for those with a Peacock subscription.

Live results - Same as the one already provided above (https://eugene.diamondleague.com/program-results-eugene/ ).

Wanted to add that it looks like a #ForeverBuff will be providing Expert commentary for the distance races this weekend!

Just noticed that #ForeverBuff Sara Vaughn is part of the Bolder Boulder pro race, scheduled to start in a few minutes.

Noticed there's a few #ForeverBuffs scheduled to be racing at the Portland Track Festival, being run today and tomorrow. (Don't see any Buffs in any of the major (3000M steeple and 10000M) being competed this evening.) The racing looks to all be at Lewis and Clark U.'s Griswold Stadium.

For tomorrow, Buffs I see competing (sorry in advance if I'm missing anyone; All times converted to Mountain.):

8:40 PM Women's 1500M, Section/ Heat 1 - Emma Coburn and Dani Jones

9:10 PM Women's 5000M, Heat 1 - Maddie Alm

9:30 PM MT Men's 5000M, Heat 2 - Zach Perrin

(One thing that I can NOT understand. In the list of entries page below, there is an entry in Section 1 of the men's 5000M (scheduled to begin at 8:50 PM MT) that says "Eduardo Herra, Colorado". Do not know if that might be recent Buff grad Eduardo Herrera or not? There is also no Eduardo in the live results entries for the 5000M in the 2nd link below, so don't know what might be going on.)

Entries (by event and heat #) - portlandtrack.com/entries

Live results (Currently also shows entries, but no heat breakdown right now) - https://live.athletictiming.net/meets/17129/events

Schedule (Note that they still say to "Check back for updates", so it may still change.?. ) - https://www.portlandtrack.com/ptf-schedule-2022

Live streaming (Pay per view - $5.99) - https://tracklnd.com/meet/ptf
(Note - looks like it's a nice neighborhood type of arrangement, where they say ~1/2 ($3) per PPV receipt will be going to increase the prize money for the top 3 finishers. They also give an opportunity to contribute separately to increase the potential prize for the top finishers.)

This weekend is THE destination event of the season***for the top #ForeverBuffs (and possibly (???) a current Buff or two), as the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships are taking place in Eugene this Thursday - Sunday (6/23-26).
(Of course, for anyone who DOES qualify as part of the U.S. team, usually by finishing top 3 at these Championships, then the World Championships becomes THE BIG meet. It's also in Eugene, and scheduled for July 15th - 24th.)

Note - Did want to note one #ForeverBuff, Joe Klecker, already has qualified for the World Championships after winning the U.S. Championship in the 10000M a few weeks ago. (See post #9 above for a little more on that.)

I assume cubuffs will come out with an article soon with Buff participants, etc.,within the next 2-3 days, but did want to provide some basic links:

BOULDER — Twelve former and current University of Colorado athletes are scheduled to compete this week in the U.S. Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

The meet begins Thursday and will conclude Sunday, with portions of the meet to be televised on CNBC and NBC, as well as streaming available at USATF.TV.

Eight women and three men from Mark Wetmore's CU program will be vying for a spot on Team USA in the July 15-24 world championships, with another athlete competing in the U20 USA Championships in Eugene this week as well.

The worlds will also be held at Hayward Field — the first time ever the worlds have been contested on American soil.

The top three finishers in the U.S. Championships will earn a berth on the USA worlds team.

Two former Buffs, Joe Klecker in the 10,000 and Gabby Scott (competing for Puerto Rico) in the 400, have already both punched their tickets to the world championships. Klecker, a 2020 Olympian, won the U.S. 10,000 title in late May to earn a berth while Scott finished second in the Puerto Rico championships (first among Puerto Rico competitors) in May to claim her berth.

The CU contingent in Eugene will be competing in eight different events, with the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase offering perhaps the best chance for more Buffs to advance to the world championships.

Three CU competitors — Emma Coburn, Val Constien, and Madie Boreman — are among the top 10 qualifiers. Coburn and Constien are both Olympians, with Coburn owning a bronze medal in the event in the 2016 Olympics in Rio, as well as gold and silver medals in the world championships.

Also with a top-10 qualifying time is Sage Hurta, who qualified for the national championships in the 1,500 and 800. She will focus her efforts on the 800 this week.

A list of CU competitors this week in Eugene:

Tyler Williams, 400 meters —
Enters the meet with 28th fastest time in the field (45.78). Finished 5th in Pac-12 400 this year, qualified for NCAA preliminaries and also ran on Colorado NCAA prelim and championships 4x400 team

Aaron McCoy, 400-meter hurdles — Has 23rd fastest time (50.85) in the field. Finished third in the Pac-12 400 hurdles this year and also ran on CU's 4x400 relay.

Sage Hurta, 800 meters — Won two national titles at CU (indoor DMR and mile), was the 2021 outdoor Pac-12 800 champ and finished second in NCAA outdoor 1,500. She is a six-time All-American and CU record holder in 800, and owns the 10th fastest time in the field this year (1:59.59). She is currently ranked 22nd in world in 800

Dani Jones, 1,500 meters — A four-time NCAA champion at CU and 12-time All-American, she won an individual NCAA cross country title in 2018 when Colorado women also won the team title. She is in the top three in CU record books in seven events and is currently 48th in the world in the 1,500. She has the 18th fastest time in the USA championships field (4:06.06).

Micaela DeGenero, 1,500 meters — She is coming off an outstanding collegiate season, when she won the NCAA indoor mile title and finished second in the NCAA outdoor championships. She has the 24th fastest time in the field (4:09.38) this week.

Eduardo "Lalo" Herrera, 5,000 meters — Has the 18th fastest time in the field this week (13:20.30) and is currently ranked 88th in the world in the 5,000. A two-time All-American at CU he owns the fastest 1,500 in CU history and was Pac-12 cross country champ in spring 2021.

Abby Nichols, 5,000 meters — Had an outstanding spring for Buffaloes, winning a grueling 5,000/10,000 double at the Pac-12 championships before finishing sixth in the NCAA championships 5,000. A Pac-12 cross country champ last fall, she is ranked 17th in this field this week.

Abbey Glynn 400-meter hurdles — Has the 20th fastest time in the field (57.05) this week. She finished third in the Pac-12 400 hurdles this year and qualified for the NCAA championships. She also ran on CU's NCAA 4x400 relay team and has a top-five time in CU history in the 400 hurdles.

Emma Coburn, 3,000-meter steeplechase — One of most decorated track athletes in CU history, she has starred on the world stage and is probably the best bet of this week's competitors to join Klecker and Scott at the world championships. Coburn is a three-time Olympian, including a bronze medal in 2016 at Rio. She also won a world championship gold medal in 2017 and a silver in 2019 … She is currently ranked 10th in the world and has the second-fastest time in the U.S. championships field. She won three NCAA titles at CU and was a five-time All-American.

Val Constien, 3,000-meter steeplechase — She has the fourth-fastest time of qualifiers this year (9:18.34). She finished 12th at the 2020 Olympics and is currently ranked 19th in the world. A two-time All-American at CU, she ran on the Buffs' 2018 women's national champion cross country team.

Madie Boreman, 3,000-meter steeplechase — She owns the U.S record for under-20 age group steeplechase (9:46.48) and is the third Buff in the top 10 qualifiers this year, with the ninth-best time of 9:33.02. She finished fourth in this year's NCAA championships steeplechase after winning the Pac-12 title. She also finished second in the 2017 NCAA championships and is a three-time All-American.

Emma Pollack, U20 400-meter hurdles — She has the fifth-fastest qualifying time in the Under-20 field this week.

Looks like Sage Hurta has advanced to tomorrow's 800M semifinals by winning her heat (#2).

Keep it up Buffs!

Dani Jones also advances, in her case to Saturday's 1500M finals, by being the 2nd fastest time qualifier (and 5th fastest overall). It was good she was in heat #1, as all 3 time qualifiers came out of that heat.
(Recent Buff grad Micaela DeGenero finished just out of a qualifying position, finishing 4th in heat 2 when only the top 3 of each heat auto-qualify.)

Article after today's racing - https://cubuffs.com/news/2022/6/23/...rta-jones-advance-in-usatf-championships.aspx

"
EUGENE, Ore. — University of Colorado alums Sage Hurta and Dani Jones both advanced past the first round Thursday on the opening day of the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at historic Hayward Field.

Hurta and Jones were two of four Buffs who competed on Thursday.

Hurta celebrated her 24th birthday by winning her 800-meter heat with a strong 2:00.86 to advance to Friday's semifinals. Jones finished fifth in her 1,500 heat, but her time of 4:10.13 — which would have won the other two heats — earned her a berth in Saturday's finals.

Buffs who competed but did not advance were Abbey Glynn, who finished fifth in her 400 hurdles heat (58.31) and Micaela DeGenero, who was fourth in her 1,500 heat (4:16.19).

CU's Tyler Williams was scheduled to run the men's 400 but did not start.

Hurta ran strong from the beginning, moving to the front after the first 200 meters and then holding that spot for most of the rest of the race. She was just ahead of Olympic bronze medalist Raevyn Rogers heading down the final stretch and held Rogers off in the final few meters to win the heat.

Hurta's opening effort Thursday no doubt provided some healing salve. It was just roughly a year ago when she fell in the semifinals of the Olympic Trials 800 on the same Hayward Field track and missed advancing to the finals.

"I just wanted to get through to tomorrow," she said after Thursday's effort.

Hurta has spent the last year getting some international competition under her belt, competing in Diamond League races and getting more accustomed to the environment of racing against world-class talent.

That experience showed Thursday, as she looked more than comfortable running with Olympian Rogers.

"I got a first-hand look at what it takes to run at that level," she said. "In all my training, that's what I'm envisioning every day. You have to forget what those names are when you're in the race. I've gotten trial by fire."

The only runner with a better 800 time Thursday was two-time world championships bronze medalist Ajee Wilson, who ran 2:00.37. Rogers ran 2:01.10 while Olympic gold medalist Athing Mu cruised to an easy win in her heat in 2:01.24.

In the 1,500, Jones found herself in a heat that included two Olympians and ended up producing the six fastest times of the day. Jones stayed with the leaders for much of the race and kept herself among the top five throughout the last lap. Heather Maclean won the heat in 4:07.96, with the next two finishers, Elle St. Pierre and Helen Schlachtenaufen each timed in 4:08.52.

The winners of the other two heats ran 4:10.39 and 4:14.43.

Hurta will run in Friday's semifinals, set to begin at 9:02 p.m. (MT). Jones will run in Saturday's finals, scheduled to start at 2:40 p.m.

Start times for the Buffs competing today-

Before I forget, also wanted to note one Buff-related name I haven't seen mentioned yet by cubuffs as competing this week is Addison (Addy) Wiley, who is scheduled to be racing in the Under 20 Championships tomorrow in the 1500M. (She is an incoming freshman whose signing on to be a Buff was officially confirmed by a CU T & F tweet last December 16th.) From the live results link I provided in post #14, her race is scheduled to begin at 5:52 PM MT.

Looks like current Buff (next year sophomore) Emma Pollak has advanced to the finals in the 400M hurdles by finishing 3rd in her heat with the 4th overall fastest time. (The finals are scheduled for 5:34 PM MT tomorrow evening.)

Congrats to her!

Unofficially, looks like all 3 Buffs racing have qualified for Sunday's finals in the 3000M steeplechase, with just graduated Madie Boreman finishing 6th in the 1st heat (after pacing over half of it), and qualifying as the last time qualifier. In a slower 2nd heat, Emma Coburn led most of the way and gets the win, while Val Constien also auto-qualified by finishing 3rd. (Top 5 in each heat plus next 4 fastest overall times qualified for the finals.)

Way to go!

And Sage Hurta also auto-qualifies with a 2nd place finish, in her case in the 800M, as she runs a big PR (1:58.30) that is also a World Championships qualifying time. (That qualifying time means that, no matter how slow Sunday's finals go (although it will probably be fast anyways), if she is able to finish in the top 3, she will qualify for next month's World Championships.)

Hurta and Joe Klecker are really pushing each other in training.

I think Kara Goucher is calling races at this meet.

While the U.S. Championships have been going on, at another place another #ForeverBuff went and earned a win in a LONG race!

Not as much action going on today, but article after Dani Jones finished 8th in the 1500M finals - https://cubuffs.com/news/2022/6/25/jones-eighth-in-usa-1-500-six-buffs-set-for-sundays-finals.aspx

The article also gives a final preview of the races involving 6 Buffs that will be competing in the Championships' final day tomorrow. Note that because of expected heat in Eugene, some race times were moved up. The races involving Buffs:
  • 11:30 AM MT - Women's 5000M (Nichols)
  • 11:53 AM MT - Men's 5000M (Herrera)
  • 12:15 PM MT - Women's 3000M steeplechase (Boreman, Coburn and Constien)
  • 2:24 PM MT - Women's 800M (Hurta)
(Unfortunately, from what I understand, NBC's channels are not adjusting their coverage times, so the only race involving a Buff that will be shown live on TV will be the women's 800M on NBC. (They are still showing a 3:00-4:00 time slot on the USA Network, but from the schedule I see, the meet is over before 3:00, so don't know what they might show then (tape delayed races from earlier in the day or ???)? The races moved up do show as available for those who have a premium USATF+ subscription, with them showing coverage beginning at 11:30 AM MT (at https://www.usatf.tv/gprofile.php?m...ent_id=49&year=2022&do=videos&video_id=331732).)

There was one future and one current Buff competing at the Under 20 Championships today, where the top 2 finishers in each event qualified for the World Championships, scheduled to be in Cali, Columbia from August 1st - the 6th (https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-u20-championships/cali22)) :

1) As the article linked to above noted, next year sophomore 400M hurdler Emma Pollak finished 6th in the finals, while
2) Incoming Buff freshman Addy Wiley easily won the 1500M final, so has earned a spot on the U.S. team. (She was less than a second off the Championships record, pretty impressive given that she won the race rather easily (by 5+ seconds).

EUGENE, Ore. — University of Colorado alum Emma Coburn used a powerful surge over the final lap Sunday to win her 10th USA Track and Field outdoor championship, clocking a 9:10.63 to win the 3,000-meter steeplechase at Hayward Field and earn a berth on the Team USA world championships squad.

Colorado alums Val Constien (9:42.96) and Madie Boreman (9:46.71) finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in the steeplechase.

Also Sunday, CU alum Eduardo Herrera finished 13th in the men's 5,000, finishing in 13:27.05. In the women's 5,000, Abby Nichols came on strong over the final few laps to move from 22nd to 15th at the finish, clocking a 16:10.72.

In the women's 800 final, Sage Hurta finished seventh against a loaded field, crossing the line in 1:59.43.

Coburn spent the spring getting in some extra speedwork with former Buff and current training teammate Dani Jones and the results showed Sunday.
...

Coburn also owns an Olympic bronze medal (2016) as well as a gold (2017) and silver (2019) in the world championships. She will have a chance to add to that total in July when the world championships are held at Hayward Field, the first time the worlds have been contested on American soil.
