I have been lazy starting this (Annual) thread, but will be adding more detail for all the great racing that will be occurring and has already occured for the Pro Buffs this year, as well as any activity for future or current Buffs in races or Championships that include Pros. I also tweaked the thread title from past year's to more accurately reflect that the many Buffs doing great work on the roads and trails (technically NOT track and field) will also be covered in this thread.

I wanted to quickly start this thread now, as a couple races are imminent.

Also want to note, for the top of the top (World-level) Buffs, the dates they will already have circled in their calendars are:
2023 U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships - Marathon - ?
2023 U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships - 10000M - ?
2023 U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships (General) - July 6-9 in Eugene OR
2023 World Track and Field Championships - Sat, Aug 19, 2023 - Sun, Aug 27, 2023 in Budapest, Hungary

Right now, coverage (on Peacock) for the 2023 World Cross Country Championships, being held in Bathurst, Australia this year, has just begin.

In a few minutes (9:30 PM MT), a mixed relay is set to begin, and Emma Coburn is scheduled to be one of the runners in it.

Then, a couple future Buffs (both will be freshmen next academic year) will be competing in the junior (believe Under 20) races:
The women's race, scheduled to begin at 10:10 PM MT, will contain Karrie Baloga.
The men's race, scheduled to begin at 10:50 PM MT, includes Kole Mathison.

Edit - Did want to note that a couple other Buffs qualified based on their finish at the U.S. Cross Country Championships, but didn't make it to Australia. Next year Buff Abbey Nechanicky qualified in the Under 20 women's race, while #ForeverBuff Makena Morley qualified for the Open women's team with a 2nd place finish. (I did see Ms. Morley made an Instagram post that let folks know she unfortunately fell on ice in her home state of Montana, and unfortunately injured one of her knees (she sounded hopeful it's a MINOR thing).)

Also wanted to note quickly that earlier today #ForeverBuff Val Constien, who mainly competes in the steeplechase outdoors, showed she should have great fitness and strength going into the outdoor season as she pulled an upset and won the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships 3000M race In Alburquerque this afternoon.
(She still has a close CU connection as I believe the CU coaches still coach her, and I believe she is often training with the top current Buff runners. She even wore a retro CU singlet today (which unfortunately is I believe also an upshot that for some reason she's largely unsponsored at this point).)

Interview with her after the win -

Wanted to note it was a NICE day for a couple #ForeverBuff distance running coaches based on results at the venerable Boston Marathon, which was run this morning/ afternoon in rainy Beantown:

  • Dathan Ritzenhein, who moved back to Boulder in 2020 to coach the new On Athletic Club running group (On looks to be a newer Swiss running shoe company) is, along many other top runners, the coach of Kenyan Helen Obiri, who won her 1st marathon today in only her 2nd attempt. (She has been a great track runner for many years (Olympic medals, World Championships golds, etc.), but switched over to the marathon (and moved to Boulder (or at least the Boulder area?)) last year.)

  • Joe Bosshard, the head coach for Team Boss (also based in Boulder), had runners he coaches finish as the top American finishers in both the women's (Emma Bates in 5th) and men's (Scott Fauble in 7th) races.
BIG congrats to both, as well as of course their runners!

A couple interviews, one with each:

(Quickly looking at the list of the elite pro field ( https://www.baa.org/races/boston-marathon/pro-athletes/2023-boston-marathon-professional-team), I recognize a couple of #ForeverBuff women who were in the field. From looking at results, looks like Laura Thweatt finished 30th, while Sara Vaughn looks to have abandoned the race (pretty common in the marathon) sometime after the half-way point.)

Wanted to mention that this Friday kicks off the 2023 Diamond League schedule, with many of the top athletes of the world.

Included in the list of entries ( https://doha.diamondleague.com/programme-results-doha/ ) are 2 #ForeverBuffs, both in the women's steeplechase. Best wishes to Emma Coburn and Valerie Constien!
(Congrats are also in order to Ms. Constien recently announcing she's received, I believe, her 1st major pro contract (with Nike)!)

The meet, which I believe starts at 10:00 AM MT, is available to watch live for those who have a Peacock subscription.

Buffzone/ Pat Rooney article on the pro fields for Monday's Bolder Boulder..

Among many other things in it, it does note that 2 #ForeverBuffs, both in the women's race, will be competing, Laura Thweatt on "Team USA", and Carrie Verdon on the "USA- Colorado" team.

Best wishes to the Buffs, and ALL the runners and walkers, on Monday!

A couple #ForeverBuffs are also scheduled to be running in a few hours, with Emma Coburn and Dani Jones both scheduled to be in the 1500M at the LA Grand Prix being televised on NBC. The broadcast begins at 2:30 PM MT, and their race is scheduled for a 3:11 PM MT start.

It’s the biggest meet of the year (at least so far) this weekend for a few current and alum Buffs, as the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships are being held from tomorrow through Sunday in Eugene, Oregon, with a place at this year’s World Championships (scheduled to be held in Budapest) possible for the top finishers in each event.

A couple notes:
  • In addition to the “main” (AKA Senior) Championships, U.S. Champions in the Under 20 (U20) division are also being decided this weekend, with their competitions interspersed with the senior championships, although mostly competed during the day. If I see any current or known future Buffs are competing in the U20’s, I’ll post info on that in a later post.
  • In addition to the many Buffs competing, anyone watching the broadcast(s) may want to also listen for mention of the 2 top head coaches who are #ForeverBuffs and lead teams based in Boulder that have many top athletes (some who are also #ForeverBuffs) competing this weekend- #TeamBoss’s Joe Bosshard and On Athletics Club’s Dathan Ritzenhein.

EUGENE, Ore. – University of Colorado alum Joe Klecker ran his way onto Team USA for the upcoming World Athletic Championships on Thursday.

Klecker was one of 10 athletes with Colorado ties to compete on the opening day of the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships at historic Hayward Field. Alums Sage Hurta-Klecker, Emma Cobrun, Madie Boreman and Dani Jones each advanced out of their respective first-round races.

Klecker had to wait all day for the men's 10K, which didn't get started until 9:30 p.m. MT. He finished on the heels of Woody Kincaid (28:23.01) with a time of 28:24.50. Klecker dropped to ninth at the 4,800-meter mark and didn't make a big move until jumping into fifth with 2,000-meters to go. He ran the final two 400-meter splits in under 60 seconds, including a final lap of 56.88.

Hurta-Klecker was the first Buff to advance on the day, running a time of 2:01.48 in the 800-meters. She was in second in her heat after the first 400-meters and closed the race's second half in 1:00.79 to win her heat. She automatically qualified for the semi-finals by winning the heat, finishing 11th overall.

Coburn and Boreman went first and fifth in the steeplechase to advance to Saturday's final. The field didn't get anywhere close to Coburn's nation-leading time of 9:07.93. Instead, Coburn was able to navigate through the field opening the first lap in 10th and maneuvering into first by the penultimate lap, finishing in 9:36.69.

Boreman took a different strategy into the race opening running in the top five for the first five laps. She fell to sixth with two laps to go but regained her position on the final lap to finish in 9:42.07.

Jones finished third in the final heat, and 12th overall, in the 1,500-meters to claim an auto-qualifier into Saturday's final. She improved on each of her splits and closed with a 45.73 split in the final 300-meters.

Avery McMullen opened the afternoon for CU in the heptathlon. She sits 14th overall after four events. Her best event of the day was the 200-meters, where she finished 10th (24.66).

Buffs who competed but did not advance were James Milholen, who finished 21st in the men's 400-meters (46.68) and India Johnson (34:58.50) and Mackenzie Caldwell (35:07.09), who finished 17th and 18th, respectively, in the women's 10K.

Friday will continue with the heptathlon, starting with the long jump at 12:45 p.m. MT. Abbey Glynn will be in action in the 400-meter hurdles (5:39 p.m.).

Portions of the meet are being televised on CNBC and Peacock, as well as streaming available at USATF.TV.

EUGENE, Ore. – Colorado's Abbey Glynn and alum Sage Hurta-Klecker both advanced in their respective events on day two of the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at historic Hayward Field on Friday.

Avery McMullen also competed on the day wrapping up the final three events of the heptathlon. McMullen set a season-best in the javelin topping out at 34.46m (113-) and she and she finished ninth in the 800-meters (2:21.52) to close the two-day event 11th overall (5396 pts).

Glynn claimed an automatic spot in the semifinals, finishing third in her heat. She was running fifth, and out of a qualifying spot, after the first 200-meters, but picked up ground in the final 200 to cross the finish in 57.72. Glynn's time was the fourth-fastest among collegiate runners.

Hurta-Klecker improved on her time of 2:01.48 in the first round of Thursday's 800-meters. She ran the sixth fastest time on Friday, posting a 2:00.56 and earning one of two time qualifying spots in Sunday's final.

The meet continues on Saturday with Dani Jones kicking the day off for CU in the final of the women's 1500-meters (7:34 p.m. MT). Glynn will race in the 400-hurdle semis at 7:55 p.m. and Emma Coburn and Madie Boreman will go for the steeplechase gold at 8:25 p.m.

Gustavo Alfonso will also compete in the U20 men's javelin final on Saturday (1:30 p.m. MT)

Portions of the meet are being televised on CNBC and Peacock, as well as streaming available at USATF.TV.

About 45 minutes until the 1st of the Hurta-Klecker couple, the last 2 Buffs left to finish their competition at these Championships, begin their race.

Article summarizing yesterday's action, when Emma Coburn earned yet another trip to either the World Championships or Olympics in her GREAT career! -
(As it mentions below, Dani Jones wasn't able to finish her race. Per an Instagram post, she unfortunately lost a shoe early in the race.)

EUGENE, Ore. – Colorado alum Emma Coburn highlighted day three of the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships at historic Hayward Field on Saturday.

Coburn ran her way onto Team USA in the steeplechase, finishing second with a season-best time of 9:13.60. Coburn ran in the top three for the entire race and held the lead in the final stages, before getting caught by former Arkansas Razorback Krissy Gear.

The second-place finish snapped a streak of 11 consecutive U.S. outdoor titles for Coburn.

Coburn becomes the second Colorado alum to make Team USA for the upcoming World Athletic Championships in Budapest, Hungry, joining Joe Klecker in the men's 10,000-meters.

Abbey Glynn's bid for a spot in the 400-meter hurdles came up short on Saturday. She finished seventh in her heat and 13th overall (57.43) in the two-heat semifinals.

Former Buff Dani Jones did not finish in the women's 1,500-meters, pulling out of the competition after the first 400-meters.

Gustavo Alfonso advanced to the final eight in the U20 javelin. His first throw of 60.52m (198-7) proved to be the best of his six attempts and was good enough for a sixth-place finish.

Elsewhere, Allie Routledge finished eighth in the high jump at the UK Athletic Championships, clearing 1.73m.

The action concludes on Sunday with Sage Hurta-Klecker and Joe Klecker in action. Hurta-Klecker will look to clinch a spot on Team USA in the 800-meters (7:18 p.m. MT) while Klecker will look to complete his double in the 5,000-meters (7:50 p.m.).

Interview with Ms. Coburn after yesterday's race -

Article after the completion of the Championships.
(Although Mr. Klecker in the 5000M and Ms. Hurta-Klecker in the 800M both finished 4th last night so JUST outside the magic 3rd place finish required to guarantee an opportunity to represent the U.S. at the World Championships, I believe there is a SLIGHT chance they could still represent the U.S. in those distances, as there are 2 who did finish in the top 3 in the women's 800M and 1 in the men's 5000M who don't currently have the world standard time. Note that those runners would still qualify (and maybe already have?) (1) if their world points ranking is high enough and/ or (2) they are able to get the world standard time in a race before the end of this month. Also want to note that, since Joe Klecker has already qualified in the 10000M, don't know if he'd want to race the 5000M anyways.?.)

EUGENE, Ore. – Colorado had three athletes in contention on Sunday's final day of the U.S. Track and Field Championships at historic Hayward Field.

Former Buffaloes Sage Hurta-Klecker, Joe Klecker and Abby Nichols each were vying for a chance to make Team USA for the upcoming World Athletic Championships in Budapest, Hungry.

Hurta-Klecker was first on the docket for the Buffalo alum. She ran a 2:00.65 in the 800-meters on Friday to advance to Sunday's final. Hurta-Klecker ran toward the lead in the first 400-meters, hitting the first split at 58.54. Her pace fell off in the final 400-meters, closing in 1:02.66 to cross the finish one spot shy of a spot in Team USA in fourth (2:01.19).

Klecker, who made the team in the 10K on Thursday, was looking to qualify for his second spot on Team USA, running in the men's 5K on Sunday. He ran in the middle of the pack early on and would drop to 13th at the 3,200-meter split. He would have to chase down the leaders in the last half of the race, finishing just outside of the top three with a time of 13:26.94.

Nichols had to wait all week for the women's 5K. She was positioned 15th after the first 400-meters and was eighth after 800-meters, but wasn't able to maintain the moment. Nichols pushed to the finish, closing the race in 10th with a time of 15:27.02.

Klecker (10000m) and fellow alum Emma Coburn (steeplechase) will make their way to Budapest as a part of Team USA. The World Games are set for Aug. 19-23.

Wanted to note that early tomorrow (Mountain Time) is the start of the World Outdoor Track and Field Championships, scheduled to be held in Budapest from August 19th-27th.

Names that I can think of with Buff and/ or Colorado connections:
  • There are 3 #ForeverBuffs I know about who are scheduled to compete over the Championships, with women's steeplechaser Emma Coburn and men's 10000M runner representing the U.S., and women's 400M runner Gabby Scott representing Puerto Rico.
  • I'd assume there are more Coloradan's competing, but the 2 I know about are:
    • Heptathlete Anna Hall, who ended her prep career at Valor Christian before attending college at Georgia and Florida. (With the best point total this year, she's one of the favorites in the event, and looks to become the 1st American to win the event for a long time (since FloJo).)
    • Niwot native Elise Cranny (who attended Stanford and I believe is now part of a pro Nike running group that's based in Eugene) is scheduled to compete in both the 10000M and 5000M runs.
  • In addition to competitors, a couple of the U.S's top distance running coaches, both based in Boulder, are #ForeverBuffs and have runners competing.at the Championships:
    • Dathan Ritzenhein is the head coach of the ON Athletic Club (OAC). In addition to the aforementioned Joe Klecker, OAC has many other runners who qualified and are entered for the Championships. They include the U.S.'s Alicia Monson (women's 10000M and 5000M), Josette Andrews (women's 5000M; may be an alternate?) and Yared Nuguse (men's 1500M). An international team, other runners competing from OAC include New Zealand's George Beamish in the men's 3000M steeplechase, Aussie Morgan McDonald in the 5000M, Switzerland's Jonas Raess (also in the men's 5000M), Spain's Mario Garcia in the men's 1500M, and Italian Sintayehu VIissa in the women's 1500M. (Found a nice detailed article on OAC that was published today in the New York Times ( https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/18/sports/world-athletics-championships-oac.html).)
    • Joe Bosshard is the main coach for the TeamBoss group. In addition to the aforementioned Emma Coburn (to whom he's also married), he coaches women's 1500M runner Cory McGee.
  • Last but not least, in the announcing front, believe #ForeverBuff Kara Goucher is slotted to be the expert commentator for NBC's coverage of any distance running events.

NBC's viewing schedule (All times Eastern.) - https://www.nbcsports.com/olympics/...d-field-championships-tv-live-stream-schedule
(Sounds like TV coverage will be on a combination of NBC, CNBC and the USA Network. In addition, sounds like all coverage will also be streamed on Peacock, which will also be providing some separate streams for individual events.)

(Looks like event times may all be in Budapest time, which is 8 hours ahead of Mountain time.)

Congrats to #ForeverBuff Gabby Scott, who yesterday advanced to tomorrow's semi-finals in the women's 400M. (If I'm correctly translating the time difference, I'm thinking the semis are scheduled for 1:20 PM MT.) Per the start lists ( https://worldathletics.org/en/compe...results/women/400-metres/semi-final/startlist), looks like she's scheduled to run in lane #4 in heat 2. (Top 2 finishers in each of the 3 heats, plus the 2 other fastest times, advance to the finals.)

Just wanted to mention today and tomorrow are the Diamond League (top pro league) finals for 2023, with this year's edition being competed in Eugene.

From quickly looking through the entries, I find one #ForeverBuff scheduled to compete, Sage Hurta-Klecker, who is on the start list for the women's 800M, which is scheduled to start at 3:19 PM MT tomorrow (Sunday).

The main coverage is on NBC, with telecasts from 1:00 - 3:00 PM MT today and 2:00 - 4:00 PM MT tomorrow. (Peacock is also streaming the NBC telecast for those who have a premium subscription to that app/ service.)

Congrats to #ForeverBuff and Boulder resident Sara Vaughn on her 10th place finish (she was also the 3rd American accross the finish line) at today's Chicago marathon (one of the worldwide majors). In addition:
  • She easily earns an Olympic qualifying time so, if she can also finish top 3 at the U.S. marathon trials scheduled for next Feb. 3rd in Orlando, believe she will be an Olympian.
  • Per full results ( https://results.chicagomarathon.com/2023/?pid=list), looks like she was also the top female finisher in her (35-39) age group.

Ms. Vaughn's 1st post after her race (see my last post above for more detail ) -
