Public scrimmage Saturday 10-19

We are stacked this year. The only question I have is if our perimeter players have learned how to feed the post. Granted Scott sometimes had trouble getting a balanced position (the weight and experience should help there), but the times he did, he'd either get fed late or out of position. Oh and our defense of course.

Gotta love the leadership Dinwiddie shows. I'm very excite for this season.

This year's squad has some top level players, but what could make it special is a supporting cast that gives Tad a ton of options to create matchups and play the hot hand.

Jenkins def looked out of sorts or there and was obviously frustrated. That said he has all the tools. Probably going to be a hit or miss situation

With Roberson we would have been SO loaded. Like "elite 8" loaded. What a shame.

Come join the Dustin Thomas bandwagon. I'm driving but you can have shotgun.

1. Dinwiddie - Talton - Hopkins
2. Booker - Jenkins - Nelson
3. Fletcher
4. Johnson - Thomas
5. Scott - Gordon

RS - King.
Won't see the floor - Stalzer and Mills (Potential transfer Stalzer???)

Fletcher was by the far the best freshman. Physically ready, balanced game. I'd start him. Hopkins needs a couple years to mature and refine his shot/defense/role. Great handles though. King was a flier and he should redshirt. Didn't watch Thomas much.

Like all big men, It'll take 3 years to develop Gordon. He's got a ton of promise, but seemed tired and at times lost his footwork. He will only provide 10mins a game due to undisciplined foul trouble. But that can spell Scott nicely.

I 100% agree with this lineup. That is exactly how I would have made it.

- I agree about Fletcher. He was the one that impressed me the most in this game. He shot well and always seemed to be in the right spot at the right time.
- Talton also impressed. Made some big shots and ran the Black team well.
- I liked Gordans game. Really tough inside but he did make some stupid fouls. He would have been taken out early in a real game due to foul trouble.
- Scott was a monster!!! Great offensive moves under the basket. One time he dribbled down the court made a move to get around defender and jammed it home. It was awesome! He can handle the ball pretty well for a big.
- Stalzer, bad. Out of control. Tried to do too much and looked bad doing it. I think he knows he can't keep up with the other guards. He shouldn't see the court much.

Have to take care of the ball better. Too many lazy passes and bad decisions with the ball. I missed Booker. Wish we could have seen him yesterday.

Talton was obviously very impressive, but he was guarded by Stalzer, not Dinwiddie for most of the scrimmage, dont know what you can take from that.

XJ's shot looked much improved probably our 2nd best player this year.

Jenkins was really disapointing. I had high hopes for him but didnt see anything that gave me hope. Rohn kept yelling at him about positional things on the offensive end.

Wes got tired after about 3 minutes which was pretty funny. Looked great around the hoop tho.

King looked real shaky especially on offense. Dont see him contributing early on at least.

I could see Hopkins developing into a shutdown defender being able to play the 1 or 2 on offense.

Finally, Thomas looks like hes athletic enough to play some 3.

Rotation:

Dinwiddie, Talton (Hopkins)
Booker, Fletcher, Hopkins
XJ, Thomas,(Fletcher)
Josh, XJ, (Thomas)
Wes

9 deep looks nice

When bringing the ball up court Spencer still stalls the ball just past half court. The defense gets set, the offense takes awhile to get going and never really gets any flow to it. Drove me nuts last year. There is a noticeable difference in the half court game when Talton was running the point. Having said that The Mayor can make up for it a lot of times by being the special player that he is. It'd be good to see him push the ball to the perimeter and get the others involved quicker.

why does he do this? It drives me insane, there were a few times late in close games he would just bring the ball up and making somebody stop him, that is the Spencer I want to see. If Talton can do this consistently I'm all for seeing Spencer move to the 2 and let Talton play the point.

:yeahthat: The Mayor is most comfortable at 2. He always has been. That's why Tomlinson was so valuable: he kept Spencer comfotable at #2. Start Talton at 1, Spencer at 2 and bring Ski off the bench for either position. XJ at 3....Gordon at 4 and Jelly at 5.

Awesomeness! It was also intrguing to see Scott and Mills on the floor at the same time for the Black---rare, but verrrry interesting!

I question that as well. It's one thing if we're setting up and running a clear offense, but no point in doing so if it's just going to end up being a PG and 4 chickens running around with their heads cut off. Just push the tempo and go for it sometimes.

Also, I would be giddy to actually see some set pieces this year. It's incredible what set pieces can do...

Certainly a lot of depth to be managed. While that's obviously great, it brings with it many challenges. We don't have to play guys just to play them unless the situation (matchups, fouls) call for it. I don't want us to go overboard being "too" deep (it's a fun problem to have).

I'm jumping on the Gordon Bandwagon. I don't think it's going to take him three years. I think the redshirt year was super smart. Gordon has a learning curve to go through (avoiding fouls mainly), but he's going to be a beast by the time the Pac 12 slate comes around. He'll be our top rebounder and shot blocker for sure!!! He'll start against bigger teams, maybe come off the bench against smaller teams.

Where's the shame exactly? Roberson being drafted in the first round? The buffs being able to leverage that on the recruiting trail? I don't get this comment at all

On the defensive end and rebounding side of things....maybe. On the offensive end...we might be better without him if XJ and the young guys can stretch the floor and get to the rim.

I really feel this has turned into a win-win situation.

First, I think colorado will be a better team without him. Not a dis to Dre by any means, but he is a defensive and rebounding specialist, with limited offensive skills. Tad wants to play team defense, and having a beast defender never hurts, but is less of a big deal.

Second, I think OKC has really benifited by drafting someone who can defend and rebound. They have plenty of scoring threats with Durant and Westbrook, so a defensive specialist will really help. Plus NBA turns into a lot of one-on-one situations where Dre should be able to thrive.

Lastly, Dre obviously won with a first round draft to a team where he has a good chance at some playing time.

The idea that CU is better without dre is not ok.

This. We're certainly going to take longer to get up to speed this year and in conference play without someone like Dre who's been there before to bail us out on the defensive end. Dropping the opener to Baylor, getting waxed again by Kansas on the home court, and losing a road game in which we're favored like at CSU or AF are all very real possibilities when we're trying to plug in anywhere from 3-5 freshmen into our regular rotation and see who we can count on for minutes. Those things happening at the beginning of the year do not mean we are automatically having to lower our sights on the NIT or grumble and make excuses about it being a "rebuilding year." Tad will have them ready to impress in February and March but there is absolutely no addition by subtraction on the court in having Dre leave early. Veterans cover up for a lot of growing pains.

Thank goodness we don't have the number 2 rebounder in the nation and pac12 defensive player of the year holding us back anymore.

several people note that Booker has been out sick and several people slam Jenkins' play. nobody mentions the possibility Jenkins didn't feel well Saturday. only one illness per team, per day? it wouldn't hurt to cut the guy some slack

The coaches and players don't seem overly concerned with missing Dre. I'll take their word for it.

Coaches don't talk about what they don't have.

Team would be better in a lot of ways with Dre on it. I think that in some ways, though, him leaving will force the development of some guys. A player like Dre covers up for so much. Maybe not having him will make guys play with better fundamentals on defense and when rebounding.

This really isn't a hard concept: it's a shame that we can't have Roberson playing for CU this year. I know, rocket surgery.:bang:

Any recall how our team did not box out last year? Dre included (luckily he had that magical ball hawking ability). I am not too concerned about our defense declining. Playing hard on that end is a mindset that Tad will instill in everyone.

Looking for a big jump on the offensive/execution side though. This is partly due to not having Dre hold the ball and try to go one on one every time he got it on the wing/post...and partly due to the hope that we actually push the tempo consistently this year!
