BOULDER — The postseason kicks into high gear for the University of Colorado cross country teams with the 2018 NCAA Mountain Region Championships on Friday, November 9, in Provo, Utah.

BYU will serve as the host of the regional championship at East Bay Golf Course. The women's 6k race is first at 11 a.m. MT, while the men's 10k race will follow at 12 p.m. MT. A short awards ceremony will follow to honor the top 25 racers on each side with all-region honors. Friday's forecast is sunny with a high of 47 degrees Fahrenheit. Admission is free.

The CU women enter the meet as the fourth-ranked team in the nation, while the men are eighth in the latest USTFCCCA Poll. The women are second in the region to top-ranked New Mexico, while the men are third behind No. 1 Northern Arizona and No. 2 BYU.

Both fields have some great competition. The CU women defeated New Mexico earlier this season at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, but BYU, the host, is ranked third in the region and could prove some competition.

The men have a tougher field. As noted, NAU and BYU will be strong competition as the top two teams in the country. But there are some other top-30 teams in the field, including Air Force (13), Colorado State (14) and Wyoming (18) which will be fighting to advance to NCAAs.

"Our aspirations for regionals are always the same, whatever gender, whatever year, and that is to get beyond that event and make it to the nationals as carefully and economically as possible," head coach Mark Wetmore said. "So the men will go into the regional ranked third. We will not actively try to beat Northern Arizona or BYU, but they will also be actively not be trying. So really we have to make sure we aren't seventh or eighth; that would be a big mistake and would jeopardize our chances of advancing.

"The women are in the top four of the country. New Mexico is in the top two. Both of those teams will be watching each other to make sure they get through carefully."

The Buffs will be competing for two automatic berths to the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 17, in Madison, Wis. There are nine regional championship sites, automatically qualifying 18 teams for nationals. Another 13 teams will be selected for at-large bids on Saturday, Nov. 10, by the NCAA selection committee.

The CU men have won this meet 17 of the last 26 times. In total, they have 21 regional titles, while the women have won 15 region titles, including the last five.

Live scoring is available at runnercard.com, while Flotrack will stream the event (a subscription is required).

Reactions: wip
Buff women looking solidly in 2nd at the halfway point. (Obviously anything can still happen in the last 3K.)

Unofficially, looks like mission accomplished for the Buff women, as they're showing (easily) in 2nd place, which snags an auto qualifying berth to the NCAA Championships. (Top 3 team finishers showing as New Mexico - 41 points, Buffs 53 and BYU 85.) Great job!

The men's race is showing around 7 minutes in. With them going 10km, there's a long way to go. (From the live results, good to see all the anticipated top Buff runners were on the start list.)

CU showing in 1st place at the half way (5K) mark, led by 3 Buffs showing tied for 3rd.

With 7 of 9 regionals races now complete, looks like the Buff men (per the below Flotrack live Koalas point calculation***) are in good shape to advance as long as they don't finish too far down in today's race. I believe they should be TOTALLY safe as long as they finish in the top 4, and might be able to finish lower than that.

***Since the Buff men are going up against the 2 top ranked national teams (and STRONG National Champion favorites) Northern Arizona and BYU, it's not too likely the Buffs would want to expend the energy to try and earn one of the 2 auto-qualifying berths today. So, they are hoping for an at-large berth. In Cross country, the at-large selections are based largely and purely on teams earning Kolas points based on beating teams earlier in the season (assuming they were at largely full-strength) that (1) end up being one of the 18 auto-qualifiers (by finishing in the top 2 at each regional and (2) at-large teams selected that later at-large contenders have beaten. (The Kolas calculation does have some intracies to it- the above is a VERY simple and incomplete explanation.)

As can be seen below, Flotrack has the Buff men as the 1st at-large team in (assuming they come in 3rd at their regional). Note- this analysis also is just using estimates for the other (West) regional yet to be run, so assume if certain upsets happened there, it MIGHT (???) also affect the Buffs positions.

Not all the men showing as in yet, but enough are in where it looks like the Buffs have finished in 3rd (which as I noted above should easily earn them an at-large berth), and for the 2nd straight year Joe Klecker gets the individual win at regionals. Congrats to the team and Mr. Klecker!

Congrats to Joe Klecker on being the Regional Champion and to both the men's and women's teams on a job well done today.

Flotrack just updated their Kolas point calculation to include actual results after the last (West) regional race completed, and unless they REALLY screwed up,, looks like the men are easily into the NCAA championships (scheduled for next Saturday (the 17th) in Madison WI) as the 1st at-large qualifier. Congrats again to them, (and the women of course for auto-qualifying).

NEW ORLEANS – The University of Colorado placed 10 athletes on USTFCCCA All-Mountain Region team, which is tied for the second most selections this year.

The USTFCCCA also released the final national poll of the season, which had the CU women ranked third and the men eighth.

The CU women placed second at regionals, while the men were third. Both teams earned a trip to the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 17, in Madison, Wis. The women's 6k race is slated for a 9:45 a.m. MT start, while the men will run a 10k at 10:45 a.m.
