Third ranked Colorado Buffaloes has a nice ring to it.
The good times just keep rolling on at the CU Event Center. For the second week in a row, both of Colorado’s basketball teams found themselves moving up higher in the AP Poll. The women are officially ranked 3rd in the country, while the men moved up to the 18th rank in this week’s poll.
For coach JR Payne and the women’s team, they managed to move up 2 spots from 5th to 3rd. The Buffs finding a way to win against Oklahoma State and SMU this week warranted a spot even higher in upper echelon of the rankings. Colorado is now officially the second highest ranked team in an absolutely loaded Pac-12 conference, behind only UCLA (#2).
The women haven’t been ranked this high since the 1994-95 season, where they spent some time ranked at 2nd. If the team can manage to take care of business in their games this week, they likely will continue to rise in the rankings again in next week’s poll. The women head to the Virgin Islands to play Cincinnati, Kentucky, and NC State on three consecutive days, which will be a massive test for them. If they can manage to get back to Boulder with a record of 7-0, the basketball world better watch out.
Tad Boyle and Colorado’s men barely squeaked into the AP Poll last week at the 25th rank, but a decisive win over Milwaukee helped the Buffs skyrocket 7 spots to the 18th ranking. The men also find themselves as the second highest ranked team in their conference, trailing only third ranked Arizona. Just like the women, the men will also hit the road this week for a tournament in warmer weather.
The Buffs will face off against Richmond in Daytona Beach on Monday night and will face either UNLV or Florida State Tuesday. The men haven’t played great teams so far in their non-conference schedule and those two teams are the best teams they’ll to this point by a pretty significant margin. This will be the men’s biggest challenge of the season thus far, but a challenge they should easily be able to handle. If all goes well in Florida, the Buffs will move up even higher in next week’s poll.
As of now, neither the men and women have lost a game and are both sitting on undefeated records. Colorado is now one of eight schools in the country who have both of their basketball team’s ranked, which is quite an impressive club to be a part of. Let’s hope the the men and women can take care of business this week, so that we can see their ranks raise even more.
