Pat Shurmur is here to stay

After nearly two months of uncertainty, Colorado officially has their offensive coordinator for the 2024 season. In a video of the first team meeting posted by Darius Sanders, Deion confirmed some key coaching changes that will affect the team in 2024.

The first and most pressing news is that Coach Prime is retaining Pat Shurmur as the Buffs’ offensive coordinator. Shurmur called the plays in Colorado’s final four games of the season after the offense began to seriously stall out under the control of Sean Lewis. The Buffs didn’t fare much better with Shurmur at the helm unfortunately, as the team went 0-4 during his play calling tenure to close their season.

After season’s end, Deion took his time to name his offensive coordinator for 2024. The two final candidates were likely between Shurmur and former Tampa Bay Bucs OC Byron Leftwich. Evidently, Shurmur managed to snag the gig and will be calling the shots on offense next year. 2024 is going to be an incredibly important year for the Colorado offense, as the coaching staff completely revamped their offensive line to help protect their Heisman hopeful quarterback. Shurmur is going to have a plethora of talent as his disposal next year, but we’ll have to see if he can make the most of it.

Two other important coaching changes were also announced on Sunday. Brett Bartolone, who was Colorado’s wide receivers coach in 2023, will be moving to the role of tight ends coach in 2024. Bartolone and his unit had a very successful season last year, as the position group proved to be very solid despite having to deal with a plethora of injuries. To fill in for the void left by Bartolone moving jobs, Coach Prime has named Jason Phillips as the Buffs’ new wide receivers coach. Phillips was the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach under Deion during his time at Jackson State. Phillips will be rejoining Prime’s staff in Boulder to help develop Colorado’s absolutely stacked receiving core in 2024.

As of now, there’s been no news on who will be named the Buffs’ new defensive coordinator. A few names have popped up (Ken Norton Jr. and Mike Zimmer), but that’s pure speculation at this point. As soon as a DC is named, we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
