Lewis shined brightly in his first and only season in Boulder.
Colorado Offensive Coordinator Sean Lewis is reportedly headed to San Diego to take over the vacant head coach position at San Diego State. Lewis spent just one season with the Buffs and Coach Prime. This news was first reported by Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports.
Lewis brought his spread offense to Boulder and found immediate success in Colorado’s thrilling upset over TCU. That was the best the offense ever looked, but they showed all kinds of promise in their wins over Nebraska and Colorado State. Colorado wasn’t the most balanced team, but Shedeur Sanders looked like a Heisman contender, the receivers Travis Hunter, Jimmy Horn and Xavier Weaver all shined, and even players like Mickey Harrison and Dylan Edwards stepped up in big games.
Things turned, however, as the Buffs were unable to establish a run game, nor protect Sanders. Lewis had no answers and Shedeur had to carry the offense on his back to the point where he literally fractured his spine. Lewis also struggled with play-calling in losses to USC and Stanford, and was eventually demoted for Pat Shurmur. It’s hard to blame Lewis because the line play was really that bad, but there was no coming back from that demotion.
Prior to his hiring at Colorado, Lewis was the head coach at Kent State University from 2018-2022. He held an overall 24-31 record with the Golden Flashes through his four year tenure before heading to join Prime’s offense in his first season at Boulder. His offenses were some of the best in the country, averaging nearly 50 points per game in 2020, then over 30 per game in 2021 and 2022. Hopefully he can get the Aztecs back on track as he replaces the retiring (not by his choice) Brady Hoke.
