Realistic Analysis of Class

Dude had 2-3 months to move his young family to Boulder; keep most and recruit other December commits; fire and hire assistant coaches; get to know existing players; find, evaluate, and sign February commits; and do all the other stuff that comes with life and work. It still came out OK with the 2019 class of recruits. He is highly regarded as a coach and recruiter, and I look forward to seeing how well he does going forward.

You are talking to someone with essentially no expectations FWIW.
Completely false. I have realistic expectations. If you guys were underwhelmed with what happened since Tucker was hired, I don’t know what to tell you. Is this what I expect going forward? Of course not. But considering circumstances, Tucker did a very good job.

I am reminded of the Wendy's commercial that Ronald Reagan quoted in one of his debates. Where's the beef? Tucker and co. brought in a lot of big guys to fill needs the MM and staff never could or would do. I hope MT is a good game day coach. A 9-10 win season will be welcome.

No PAC team will ever be Alabama. But at least Colorado now has a head coach who was well thought enough by Saban to hire him twice and make him Assistant Head Coach of Alabama. Colorado is the opportunity that Tucker has been looking for. I'm looking forward to the next 2-3 seasons when the Buffs are truly his team.

He did fine. Time will tell if he can take the gigantic step forward so many seem to be treating as a formality.

I would think that new coaches have a particularly tough time making a recruiting splash with the advent of the early signing period. They have less than a month before what, 70% of the prospects are off the market?

Secondly, the dearth of talent in the trenches demanded recruiting out of necessity. 3* big uglies, although important, usually do not offer the immediate possibility of greatness that makes us speculate on "Who sees playing time as a frosh?" etc. It's just not as fun. Sort of like getting much-needed clothes for Christmas instead of shiny toys.

The focus on the trenches is a smart move I think. I hope to see that continue going forward. There will be other needs, such as quarterback, next year, so obviously not quite as many, but something like 4 OL and 3 DL every year, with a +1 every two years or so would be nice.

Because so many of today's kids have no idea of history, Walter Mondale used the Wendy's "where's the beef" against Colorado's own Gary Hart. Just for accuracy.
Was that the same campaign where Gary had to bow out due to some indiscretions with a woman other than the one he was married to? Oops.

Please build some depth. I don’t really hate HCMM. I just don’t understand why he never built any depth on the O and D lines.

No. Mondale beat Gary Hart for the nomination in 84 after which he proceeded to get blasted by Reagan by a vote of 525 to 13 in the EC. Mondale only won his home state of Minnesota and the DC. Reagan won the popular vote 58.8% to 40.6%, one of the widest margins in presidential election history.

Hart had his 1988 campaign blown up by the media reporting on his infidelities after he was photographed on a boat called the "Monkey Business" with a young woman named Donna Rice. He was also attacked for some past financial dealings but the sex stuff was what killed his campaign. At the time he was easily the favorite to win the nomination and many early polls indicated he would have been the favorite in the general election.

On a personal note Gary Hart was a friend of my Father and I remember having diner with him a couple of times (this was well before the presidential campaigns.) I remember him as being personable and one of the most intelligent people I have ever heard speak. In my opinion he would have made an outstanding president.

I sure miss the days before Nazis and socialist

But can he recruit?

Filled some gaps, got some big dudes on both lines. Think the staff could have done better at db but whatever.

Top 25 class next year, no excuses. Now go out and win and get to a bowl, like 80 other teams do.

WOOOT!
I think Oliver and Perry at safety are about as good of a combo in recruiting we have seen in quite awhile; and an upgrade over what we were facing otherwise. I did like the other targets but think these two have higher ceilings. Trujillo and Oats at CB are solid (Luckett could also factor in there if WR doesn't work out) but I am not as concerned about CB as I was about S this cycle. Oats could be a dynamic player at CB with his speed and agility; again a high-ceiling guy.

What they did on the D-line is definitely impressive and borderline amazing considering the time frame they had to operate.

LB was similar with bringing in three JuCo Juniors (two that previous staff did not have) and two frosh (getting Ham to flip).

Getting Shenault was definitely icing on the cake.

The only thing that I wished they had accomplished (wished, not expected) was a OT transfer/JuCo to compete right away and a frosh TE.

The "class" overall certainly isn't what we want going forward in regards to quality (in volume) but the new staff improved the top-end of our talent pool above what we were lined up to get so they have to get props for that; it points that we are on an upward trajectory and shows that they aren't afraid to go after elite talent.

They still have a chance at a transfer OT. I'd be surprised if they did not get one.

It was an okay job. Filled some needs, questionably filled others, and clearly failed to fill others.

We will see if he can make the jump in 2020. The cache he built from Georgia and Alabama will only go so far if he cannot get blue chips to CU. Add in the uncertainty at both LA schools, and he has a unique window to make real noise.

If we are talking about "trusting his track record" come December in much the same way UCLA fans are with Chip Kelly, then there are issues.
Which positions are the clear failed-to-fill this year, other than TE and maybe QB?

I went looking to see who was left available and not sure but it seems that only Justin Murphy (Formerly of UCLA/Texas Tech) is the only noteworthy tackle available in the grad-transfer market. Tim Anderson (Saddleback) and Josh Cooper (Navarro) seem like the only JuCo's of any note left uncommitted.

We are thin in a lot of spots on depth chart by class.

OLB: We took Pell. We didn't take a frosh the year before. That's at least 2 short.
ILB: We took Ham. Ditto above.
CB: We took 2, needed 3. No freshman last year. Miller is a Soph and alone in that class.

We took 4 DL as frosh, which seems desperate. Sami and Finau are RS Frosh. We don't need 4 in one class. Assume at least 1 will play this year and be in same class as Sami and Finau.

(edited DL to 4 from 5).

L.J. Wallace is a RS Frosh at CB.

At OLB: Don't forget Gustav, who is a greyshirt Freshman is basically in the same class as Pell. Also Ray Robinson is a RS Freshman who is a "Buff Backer" mold type of OLB/S

Given that we don't really know the details of the defensive scheme it is hard to say where there is a "shortage" or "overage" in the front 7.

For all we know Finau might stand up as an OLB.
