BOULDER--This week’s CU athlete of the week honor went to women’s tennis' Nuria Ormeño Ruiz. Ruiz won for her play during the week of Oct. 7-13.
Ormeño Ruiz a freshman from Barcelona, Spain advanced to both the singles and doubles Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional quarterfinals winning four singles and a pair of doubles matches this past weekend at UNLV.
In her doubles matches, she teamed up with senior Winde Janssens winning a pair of matches as the seventh seeded tandem before falling to the eventual tournament champions and top seed from Utah.
In singles she won her first four matches in straight sets before falling to the tournament’s runner up opponent from Nevada-Reno. Ormeño Ruiz opened the tournament in the 128-person field defeating Ros Polly Nguyen (New Mexico State) 6-1, 7-5, and then in the Round of 64 she dispatched Almundena Sanz (Idaho) 6-2, 6-3. In the third round, Ormeño Ruiz defeated Boise State’s Sandy Vo, 6-2, 6-2, and in the Round of 16 she upset the regional’s number three seed Tereza Bekerova (Utah) 6-3, 6-2.
