Summer 2017- updates on Track and Field Buffs - Emma Coburn World Champ!

Thought I'd create this thread to help keep track of current and #ForeverBuffs track and field athletes over this summer, as their seasons (especially the pros) are just starting to ramp up.

To start with, the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships are taking place now in balmy Sacramento CA. Buffs that are participating have gone through their preliminary rounds, and those that have advanced are racing, all starting in less than an hour from now. The top 3 finishers of each finals' race will be slated to represent the U.S. at this year's World Championships, being held in London from August 5th - 13th. Today's races are I believe all being shown live on NBC.

How the Buffs have progressed so far in the championships and, if applicable, when the final races are (All the Buffs I know about are racing today within the next hour.)-
1) Women's 1500M. (Final's race starts at 3:12 PM MT.) Two Buff alums, Jenny Simpson and Sara Vaughn, advanced from the preliminary round, with Ms. Simpson and Ms. Vaughn finishing 1-2 in the same heat (#2).
In spite of a relatively slow start to the season, most of the prognosticators have Ms. Simpson earning one of the three qualifying spots, while it would be considered an upset if Ms. Vaughn were to do so, although she did just recently run her 1500M personal best, so hopefully is peaking at the right time.
(Note- Both current Buff Dani Jones and alum Sara Sutherland had qualifying times to participate in these trials, but neither one chose to run the preliminary. Hopefully, in both cases, it was a tactical decision and not one forced by injury.)

2) Women's steeplechase. (Final's race starts at 3:24 PM MT.) Emma Coburn is a pretty strong favorite to win this race (believe her best time is around 12 seconds better than anyone else in the field). But, as she always mentions in interviews, I'm sure the barriers, all of which can spell doom to any steeplechaser, along with an ever stronger U.S. field, will have her full attention today.
(Note- Fellow Buff alum and often time runner at the Championships Shalaya Kipp is I believe just coming back from injury, so isn't racing today. Also, Buff freshman Madie Boreman ran a Championships qualifying time in the NCAA championships, but chose not to run here.)

3) Men's 1500M. (Final race starts at 3:41 PM MT.) After qualifying for his 1st NCAA finals earlier this month, redshirt junior Ben Saarel impressively also (JUST) qualified for today's finals in the men's 1500M race. Hopefully he just has a solid run and finishes his season off strong. I'd have hoped for a chance for him maybe lowering his school record time, but with temperatures well into the 90's, and the often tactical nature of these Championship finals, I'd assume a record would be doubtful.

Note- A couple other Buffs, just graduated Jaron Thomas (in the 110M Hurdles) and Aric Van Halen (in the 3000M steeplechase) ran in the 1st rounds of those events, but didn't advance.

And the women's 1500M runners should be on the track- scheduled to start in 3 minutes.

Ms. Coburn's race scheduled to start in a minute. (As usual, assume they'll be cutting away for ads, field updates, etc., but hopefully they'll catch the race's major parts.)

Solid run for Mr. Saarel. One of only 3 collegians in the field (otherwise running against 10 pros), he runs a contolled race, passes a couple runners in the last lap, and finishes 10th.

That was a very workmanlike effort by Emma to become the US 2017 Champion in the steeplechase. She made it look easy. It will be interesting to see how she does at the World Championships.

Best wishes to Emma Coburn, who starts in the Diamond League 3000M steeplechase in around 15 minutes. (Televised on NBC Sportsnet channel.)

Edit- After being very close to breaking her own American record a month or so ago, she has said in an interview she hopes to maybe break it today in what will probably be a FAST race. (Her current record is 9:07.63, set in last year's bronze medal Olympic performance.)

To be the best in steeple, you have to beat the Kenyans. Nice showing in Paris, Emma.

Also thanks for the workout gifs.

A couple Buff alums will be racing tonight in the "TrackTown Summer Series - New York" (stop), with the meet starting at 6:00 PM MT. Sara Sutherland is racing in the women's 3K, scheduled to start at 6:55 PM MT (assume on TV 7:55 MT***), while Emma Coburn is scheduled to race in the women's 1500M, scheduled for 7:30 PM MT start (8:30 MT*** on TV).
(For anyone in the New York City area looking last minute for something to do tonight, the meet is at the Icahn Center starting at 8:00 ET. If it still works, Ms. Coburn tweeted a ($5 off) coupon code below. When I checked the other day it looked like, with the coupon, the cheapest ticket (Gen. admission) looked to cost ~$19 including fees.)

***The main part of the meet does appear to be scheduled to be shown in total on ESPN, but it's being televised on a one hour delay, so the 2 hour coverage doesn't start until 7:00 PM MT, with my assumption being everything will be shown on TV one hour later than the scheduled live start times of the races. (Edit- looks like the tape delay is probably due to a world cup softball game being televised.)

Forgot to say congrats to Jenny (Barringer) Simpson, who became the 2nd fastest U.S. women's mile runner in history a couple days ago. In the VERY competitive world of international track, that "only" earned her 5th place in the London Diamond League race, but she does seem to be be timing her season so she should be peaking at next month's World Championships.

Best wishes to the three Buff alums running at the World Championships which begin tomorrow (Aug. 4th) and run through August 13th!

The three are Jenny Simpson and Sarah Vaughn in the women's 1500 meter run and Emma Coburn in the 3K (AKA 3000 meter) steeplechase.

Congrats to Kara Goucher for the belated silver!

And, congrats to Jenny Simpson for making the finals!

Sarah Vaughn finishes excruciatingly only a little more than 1 second behind the last final qualifier in the same heat as Ms. Simpson. Still, big congrats to her for still earning PR's throughout this season and competing well at the elite level in what many would consider later (31) in an athlete's career while juggling a busier and more complex schedule than most elite athletes. Hope she only keeps improving!

About 35 minutes until Jenny Simpson toes the line in her 1500M finals race, and hopefully she can use her noted strategy expertise and strength to pull the upset and earn her 3rd World Championship medal. Best wishes to her!

Live coverage of the Championships is going on now on NBCSN.

Just wanted to add a couple tweets which contain highlights of Jenny Simpson's race and an interview with her.
