I don't know, I just got the impression he was putting the class down.
Watching ESPN and looking at Scouts they have the class as the 6th best in the conference and ESPN gave the class a grade of a B-. So i guess to each his own, but I am very happy with the class the staff has put together.
How much would one recruit matter? Didn't somebody say a guy like Seth Jacobs would have put us 20-25? We're splitting hairs here. I think there are some schools that got ELITE talent... the Bama's and FSU's of the world and then pretty much everybody 12-42 probably aren't that far apart. A guy or two. Well that could be a schools D. Scott that they're banking on which never comes to fruition. You can't rank these classes before. You can make assessments of talent, land them and then it's putting through rigorous coaching for 2-3 years and hoping you develop some damn good players, ala Boise St. I hate to use them as a reference but they show that school rankings don't necessarily mean ****.
I've watched a lot of prospect film in my time and CU got a damn good class... especially at QB, FB, DL and DB. I think we got very good players at HB, WR and TE. OL is always hard to judge. We are much better today than we were last year around this time.
Taken in context, the coaches did an amazing job. That guy (? - I have no idea who this is) is just a friggin' mouthpiece trying to get people to talk about him, and he was successful!
Suzie Wargen (sp) of 9 news had a hilarious take on the CSU vs CU class. i know she is a lamie so it should come as no suprise. She started by saying Alabama won recruiting, and that the CSU coaching coming from Bama helped CSU get 24 guys. She then listed every positive thing she could about the CSU class (gpa's of some guys, and the fact a few of them played in state championship games). the only thing she said about CU was we got Yuri Wright, and the contriversy that goes with his signing.
Sandy had a negative opinion about the CU football program? Shocking!!
I strongly agree with the remarks above.
I think the rankings only matter for PR. It would have been nice to be in the top 25, for that reason. We were only credited with two 4 star recruits. But another six recruits could very easily (and probably should have been) given 4 stars. But this is all a flash in the pan.
Bottom line, next year we are going to be surprising people with an aggressive and fast defense. (I just hope we have no injuries at LB) We have never had the quality at cornerback that we do now, and that has always haunted us, and i think one of the reasons we didn't do better in 1994 and 2001.
On offense, we will likely see the best receiver core since the days of Westrbook, Kidd, Savoy, Carruth (if P-rich keeps developing and stops dropping the easy ones). The incoming receivers are seriously talented and haven't gotten as much press as they deserve. Abron and Payne and Powell are really going to upgrade our running game.
I'm really delighted at what the coaches have put together, and relieved we had no defections. (besides maybe jacobs and mcnamara)
I said yesterday that if you take this years class and then improve on your instate recruiting this is a top 20 class, just do the math....
I am more concerned about our ranking at the end of next year. Top 25 and a bowl victory.
Sandy Clough is a douche. I've never understood why he is allowed to talk sports. He knows nothing.
Sandy doesn't care to do the research to fully understand recruiting. I'm sure all he looked at was the ranking and not any of the players individually. He has extreme hatred for all things CU, so like most of the awful Denver sports radio jockey's, he has an agenda. He only uses facts that support his viewpoint.
How Sandy Clough and Mike Evans stay on the air is beyond me. I assume they have compromising pictures of their bosses or something.
Klough is the worst guy on radio. He has been around forever and thinks he knows everything. But he is a complete jackass. I can't stand listening to him. It is incredibly annoying When he takes a caller or has a guest that he can't stop interrupting and shouting over them. He has been demoted to late night duty. Hopefully he is off completely soon.
I couldn't agree more with what most of my fellow fans have said about this class. It is a solid building block of a class. We'll earn the respect!!!!
In conclusion, this was a solid class and Sandy Klough is a pompous dick
SandyVagina Clough must be Al Eschbech's brother. They both have the same approach; interrupt, yell, and present opinions as facts.
Agree with the above observations. This is a solid foundation class. Talent, athleticism, work ethic, and a few with chips on their shoulders. Me like.
Regarding all the lammies 0 and 1 star recruits? Doesn't matter; come September, they'll all spend a year's worth of effort on one game.
I've tried listening to Sandy. It's impossible to stay with it if you value any opinion other than Sandy's.
I listened to his lead in last night, and I can't remember exactly what he said, but after listening to his first two statements, I thought to myself "This guy doesn't know anything about recruiting." And that's coming from me, who doesn't know anything about recruiting.
I don't want to defend Sandy, but he did say that this is a solid class and acknowledged that it is the #33 rated class in the country. He even mentioned that it was a very good class given the Hawkins record and Embree's 3 wins this year. His point was that we need to get up into the top half of the conference in recruiting to compete for championships.
Sandy is a bore who gets violently arguementative if you disagree with him. Classic buttscud!
Embree mentioned Wisconsin in terms of identifying talent that fits the system.
Rivals rankings of Wisconsin classes:
2010: outside top 50
In his 6 seasons from 2006 thru 2011, Bielema is 60-19 with 2 Big 10 titles and 5 final rankings in the top 25 (2 top 10s). In 4 seasons before that, Alvarez was 34-18 with 2 seasons ranked in the final top 25. They haven't had a losing season over that decade of football.
Rankings matter, but the right type of class at the #34 ranking CU pulled in is definitely good enough to compete for championships.
Sandy Clough is the biggest jackass in the Denver media market....and that is saying something. He's like the village idiot who swallowed a thesaurus and now thinks he is smart. He couldn't order a gin and tonic in less five hundred words. Honestly, he is the biggest bag of wind this side of Al Sharpton. Did I mention he's a douche?
I liked McChesney's response to this on twitter:
Matt McChesney @SixZeroStrength
Allbuffs Sandy doesn't know ****.
Guys, Sandy isn't going anywhere, if you've lived in Colorado for a while you know that. Whether he is actually informed about the subject he is talking about or not, he's a smart guy. He's not a CU guy, he's not a friendly guy, that doesn't make him stupid. But he's a dinosaur, a dying breed, the guy who can go solo for hours. The new breed is the DMac of the world, a guy who tries to sound hip and knowledgable, but needs a jock in the booth to provide any insight.
That being said, he had good things to say about the class, arguably a more grounded opinion than anywhere else in local media. The rest of the local media (radio/The Post/9News/etc.) are putting the entire class through the Yuri Wright prism, while somehow praising CSU's class; Sandy is at least saying that we essentially overachieved given Hawkins and isn't blasting us for Yuri.
He's a dying breed that just need to die off completely. I'll take Klatt and Evans or DMac and Al all day over him. Irv and Joe are old and don't act like jackasses. There is no excuse. I always regret listening to his show when he starts stuttering and yelling over anyone has even a small difference of opinion from him. Stage 5 douche bag.
The important thing to me is that we closed the talent gap in the conference. Our talent level after this class is much closer to the top of the conference than it was a year ago.
That was really the point Sandy was missing, IMO. Yeah, the class is in the bottom half of the conference, but it was really only a couple players from being ranked in the top half. The gap is still wide to Stanford, SC, UCLA, and Oregon, but we're right in the think of it with everyone else despite less than stellar on field results in recent history.
Clough is generally knowledgable about sports, but I think he probably gave rivals a cursory look and heard about Yuri Wright, and that's about it.
At one time I listened to him, but I just can't stand the way he interrupts, misrepresents, and shouts down his 'callers'.
So, who is gonna call in and let him hear the valid points above?
As if he'd let anyone talk that long. The format is to be cut off while asking a question and then listening to Sandy pontificate for an hour about all the ways he knows best.
