BOULDER— The University of Colorado volleyball team travels to Southern California this weekend for a pair of matches against No. 20 USC and No. 17 UCLA.

The tilt against USC will be on Friday, October 10 at 7 p.m. MT. in Galen Center on USC’s campus in L.A. It will be televised on the Pac-12 Network with Josh Lewin and Kevin Wong providing the call. Live stats will also be available at USCTrojans.com. On Sunday, Oct. 10, the Buffs will face UCLA in Firestone Fieldhouse on Pepperdine’s campus in Malibu at 12 p.m. The match had to be moved from UCLA’s campus due to flooding in August. It won’t be on TV, but a free live stream and live stats will be available at UCLABruins.com.

Match Notes

Nice start for the Buffs. 14-10 up, Timeout (TO) USC

Announcers say USC has swept the Buffs the last 5 matches, or 15 straight sets.

Oh oh- USC 20-17. TO Buffs

Announcers say USC has fallen from #5 to #20 in the country this year. If they do end up falling out of the poll due a couple more losses, that would be the 1st time they were out of the Top 25 since 1990.

Buffs lose set 1- 25-20.

USC's Samantha Bricio killing us (6 kills, 1 perfect ace). Their back row defense also didn't have too much problem with our hitting after early in the set.

Bricio probably near to if not the hardest hitter in the Pac 12. Think some of our players will have bruises after this one.

For the Buffs, impressed how hard Ortiz Ruiz has been hitting this match.

Buffs not connecting with the Middles at all so far.

4-2 USC early.

17-11. Another Bricio ace. Then, overpass returning a Bricio serve. On her three aces, each one has been within a foot of the endline. It would be a beautiful thing to see as a volleyball fan, if it wasn't against the Buffs.

USC takes the 2nd set 25-18. Buffs need to regroup and try to get back into this one after the break.

Buffs lose set 2 25-25-18. Be interesting to see what if any changes are made for set 3.
(Against ASU, after falling down 2-0, they switched to a 5-1 with Edelman as sole setter. Also, surprised we haven't seen freshman Stephanie Shadley tried at defensive specialist, although I haven't noticed if Kelsey English is an issue or not.)

Service errors have been a problem for the Buffs. Often seems to be a problem on the road (an anti-altitude effect?).

Otherwise, doesn't seem like a horrible performance by the Buffs. defense seems OK, but they are still hitting a blistering .400.

Edit- looking at stats, scary we hit .320 in set 2 and still weren't competitive (of course they hit .400). I can't find the live stats, but I assume we had at least 5 service errors, which didn't help, especially since, unlike our other recent matches, our serve generally doesn't seem to be stressing their defenders.

It looks like it might be a 5-1 configuration this set. For the 1st time this season (???), G. Simpson starting a set on the bench. Strangely enough, this has been one of her better matches as to how she's been looking to me as a hitter.

So, set 3 still starts ugly. 4-1 USC

Quick CU timeout- 5-1 USC. Nothing going well, service return error on one of USC's easier looking serves.
