Is the cupboard bare or is there some hope?
My take:
Offense: The next coach will think they can make do with Hansen for one year. TH has shown some positives, but unfortunately his development has been hindered significantly under this staff. After that, Hirschman, Berglund, and Sherry clearly are unknowns. But, there's a real opportunity for the next HC to be able to immediately go after a higher profile QB recruit with the selling point of immediate playing time.
RBs are similar to QBs. Speedy could range from above average to very good in his last year, but after that, there's alot of unknowns. Could Jefferson be a real RB threat? He's got some skill, IMO.
WRs could be a bright spot. Richardson is quickly becoming what we thought Clemons would be. Richardson is a great selling point for the next HC--who wouldn't want to coach that talent? Clemons will be here one more year also, maybe the next staff can get him where he needs to be. But after that, Simmons very well will get his redshirt and be there, and could Jefferson be back at WR?
OL could also be a bright spot. Miller will be a senior (if he doesn't opt for the draft), and several young OL's could bode well: Bakhtiari, Givens, Harris, have potential and several others returning have game experience. Here's hoping the next staff will stop with the musical OL lineups every game.
Defense: The DL could be a very shaky group. I really thought they'd be better this year, but like most players under Danny Paycheck, they're development seems to have been stunted. Maybe Kasa will hit his 5* potential.
LBs still are fairly bright. If Major fully recovers with the knee, he's demonstrated what he can be. Webb could really be something, and I like Rippy also. After that, not too sure.
DBs are another very shaky area. Gone obviously are Smith, Brown, and Perkins. Will Polk become a player along with Orms? Alot of young DBs got alot of game experience this year and there's alot of returning young players--but how many of them, if any, will be something special?
And lastly, we are loaded at kicker and punter--no worries here! Well, maybe some work could be done here...ok, alot of work.
So what does that leave for the next coach? The next coach ain't going to have that big of a first recruiting class, and he'll already be behind the ball because of you know who. So, even though the class will be small, he's got to make the most of it. Makes me think we'll need a truly talented recuiter to get us back to respectability.
