As with the golf and cross country teams, thought I'd start a consolidated pre- and regular-season thread for the other "individidual" sport, the (women's) tennis team, as I see a few things of note recently announced.
(As a reminder, Buff tennis features a new head coach, Danielle Steinberg (https://www.allbuffs.com/threads/new-tennis-hc-danielle-steinberg.133295/), and assistants this year.)

Although the "real" NCAA and Pac 12 Championship seasons are in the spring, the team competes in MANY tournaments in the fall. I plan on us using this thread for all tennis news and results until the Pac 12 championships (scheduled to start on April 24th) get their own thread.)

Things of note for now :
1st, things occuring this Thursday - Sunday-

And last month, this fall's schedule was announced. (Also viewable at https://cubuffs.com/schedule.aspx?path=tennis .)

More about the events tomorrow for kids and adults (look to start at 4:30), and the Colorado Invitational starting Friday-

BOULDER, Colo. — The University of Colorado women's tennis team opens the 2018 fall season this weekend when it hosts the 2018 Colorado Invitational this Friday through Sunday.

All matches are free to the public and start at 10 a.m. The team will also host a meet and greet and a youth clinic for children 8th grade and younger Thursday at 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the courts in CU South.

The Invitational will be a great opportunity to see where the new squad is at. Teams from Colorado State, Northern Colorado, San Diego, Sacramento State, Wisconsin and Abilene Christian will be present.

"The girls have been doing well since we started as far as buying into the new culture and working hard," said Head Coach Danielle Steinberg. "Practice is a lot harder than what they are used to. We are doing a lot of fitness right now as our fall training. For the most part we are responding well and learning how to be uncomfortable and adjust to adversity. I'm excited to see our girls this weekend working hard and competing. Practice is one thing, but you really learn about your players when they compete. After this weekend we can know what we need to focus and work on."

The Buffs will see a new era of action under Steinberg. Steinberg joined the Buffs this summer after serving as the head coach for Kansas State for the past four years. Last season she led the Wildcats to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a 15-11 record, the second-most in program history.

BOULDER – A new era of Colorado tennis began on Friday as the Buffaloes held their first competition under new head coach Danielle Steinberg, the CU Invitational at CU's South Campus Tennis Complex. The Buffs got off to an excellent start, finishing 6-0 in singles matches and 4-2 in doubles play.
...

NOTES: Four new Buffs earned their first career wins in a CU uniform as freshmen Forster, Markovic and Ecton all won in their first collegiate competitions, and Malinen, a transfer from Western Kentucky, earned her first win as a Buff ... Beck won her 15th career singles match and Oleynik now has 21 career doubles wins at CU after winning twice on Friday.

UP NEXT: The CU Invitational will continue on Saturday at CU's South Campus Tennis Complex with play beginning at 10 a.m. The teams will compete with the final round of doubles before playing one round of singles. The tournament completes on Sunday with the final round of singles.

POSTMATCH QUOTES:
Danielle Steinberg, head coach
On the first competition of the season
"I think overall it was really positive. I think everyone was nervous with first-match jitters, even the returners because it's their first match of the year and first tournament under our staff. I loved the attitude in doubles. We came out with a lot of energy and surprisingly played decent doubles. We haven't had time to work on it yet, but I was really happy with what we saw in doubles today. Everyone fought in singles, which is really what we asked them to do today. We knew the level of tennis wasn't going to be perfect yet, but we asked them to focus on the positive attitude and the hard work and the fighting and everyone really showed up today. Overall, we were really pleased.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. –
The University of Colorado tennis players Monica Malinen and Megan Forster closed out the San Diego State University Fall Classic II with a pair of wins on Sunday to finish out the fall season on a high note.

Malinen, who was the lone Buff to survive the first round of her bracket, took a loss yesterday and was in the third-place match against Mia Smith of host school San Diego State University. After a disappointing 6-1 opening set, Malinen turned on the burners to win the second set 6-4, then finished off the tiebreaker 10-5.

She was not the only Buff with just a single loss, as Forster won the consolation championship in her bracket Sunday. Forster fell Friday but rallied back to defeat Kimberley Bhunu of Cal Poly in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
...

Colorado finishes off the fall season and won't be back in action until January. The team returns to play Jan. 25 against Montana State at the Air Force Academy, followed by a dual with the Air Force on Jan. 26. The Buffaloes are back home Jan. 30 against New Mexico.

Just wanted to mention looks like this tennis team has become almost a perfect example/ definition of the term "rebuilding". (Going to be interesting to see how things unfold over the next 6 years or so.) Last academic year's roster had 5 non-seniors on it; now only one remains (senior Annabelle Andrinopoulos):
  • In addition to the 2 outgoing transfers from the summer and one after last semester (see the transfer thread for more detail), the roster (https://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?path=tennis) now shows 2 more team departures that were on the team this past fall. One is senior Brigitte Beck, while the other is freshman Vera Markovic (who I believe was the 1st Buff commit under new coach Steinberg).
  • The roster currently only shows 4 players on it, which obviously won't do with 6 the minimum needed to compete without forfeiting points in matches. My main source for tennis commitments (www.tennisrecruiting.net) does show a couple freshmen coming to Boulder this spring from Australia, so assume they are at minimum part of the answer. (I will add more detail on those 2 in the recruiting thread soon.)

Best wishes to the tennis team as their main season begins!

BOULDER –
The University of Colorado women's tennis team will head south to begin the 2019 season with duals against Montana State at 10 a.m. on Friday and against Air Force Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

The team has a new look with four players returning from the fall season and two new individuals joining at semester. Senior Annabelle Andrinopoulos leads the team and is one of three from Australia. She is joined by newcomers Sara Nayar and Tallulah Farrow, both freshmen that joined the team from Australia this semester. Additionally, junior Monica Malinen and freshmen Ky Ecton and Megan Forster all return from the fall season.

Friday will mark the first dual for new head coach Danielle Steinberg. She will begin her career at Colorado with a matchup with Montana State Friday morning. The Buffs own a 4-0 record against the Bobcats, including never giving up a point to the team. CU last faced Montana State in 2001.

The following opponent may be more difficult as CU goes against Air Force. Colorado owns an 18-1 record against the Falcons, with the lone loss coming in 2013 on the road. Air Force is 3-0 this season with three wins last weekend in Nebraska against Omaha, Nebraska and Creighton. Air Force will face Northern Colorado on Friday before taking on Colorado in the morning and Montana State Saturday evening.
...

The Buffaloes return to action early next week with a dual against New Mexico at home on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. Following that they will depart for Minnesota where they are scheduled to take on DePaul on Saturday and either Montana or Minnesota on Sunday.

Have NO idea if its active, but did find a webpage (http://streamingtennis.com/USAFA/court1.html) via Google search which might (???) provide live streaming and scoring of these matches at the Air Force (or maybe just the match AGAINST the Falcons?).

Nice comeback as the Buffs win the last 3 matches contested and get the win over New Mexico after going down 1 matches to 3!!!

BOULDER – Colorado's bottom three lineup positions carried the Buffs to a come-from-behind 4-3 win over New Mexico at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center on Wednesday. CU trailed 3-1 early on, but picked up wins at No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to improve to 2-1 on the season. The Lobos dropped to 3-3.
Three of the four Buffs that earned victories were freshmen.
...

NOTES: CU improved to 19-18 all-time vs. New Mexico, including three consecutive wins in the series ... Forster and Malinen improved to 3-0 in dual matches this spring ... it was Ecton's first career match-clinching singles victory.

UP NEXT: The Buffs will head to Minneapolis for two neutral-site matches this weekend against DePaul and Montana.

"I'm pleased with our showing today," said head coach Danielle Steinberg. "It's been a tough stretch and we were definitely a bit tired today, but I am happy with our focus and energy to finish this stretch on a high note."

Colorado (3-2) was dominate top-to-bottom in the win as the women took the No.2 and No.3 doubles wins by the score of 6-2 and secure the team point before the No.1 finished. The freshman duo of Megan Forster and Sara Nayar took the win over Lauren Dunlap and Lidia Dukic as the No.2 team, while Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Ky Ecton teamed up to take down Nathalie Joanlanne and Walker in the No.3 doubles match. All the matches won for the Buffaloes came without giving up a single set, the first such occasion this season.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team will host the University of Northern Colorado Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Boulder Country Club before traveling to Denver on Sunday to take on the University of Denver at 4:30 p.m.

This will be just the sixth match in CU history at the Boulder Country Club and the first since 2006 when the Buffaloes took on Texas. Colorado has a 4-1 record at the Boulder Country Club.
...

The UNC Bears (3-2) have the same record as CU coming into this matchup. Northern Colorado began the season being swept at Air Force and most recently were swept 7-0 at the University of Denver. The three wins came at home with sweeps of NCAA Division II program CSU-Pueblo and NCAA Division II program Colorado College. They also defeated DII program MSU-Denver by a score of 6-1.

DU (4-1) comes into this matchup undefeated at home with a 4-0 win over New Mexico, a 5-2 win over BYU and the sweep of UNC. To start the dual season Denver defeated Oregon 4-0 but was swept by No.7-ranked Pepperdine 4-0. DU's Anna Riedmiller leads the team with a 4-0 record in the No.2 and No.3 singles spots. The team is undefeated in the No.1, No.3 and No. 6 positions this season.

Denver has two ranked individuals from the early Nov. 14 rankings, Arisha Ladhani at No. 85 and Bianca Mok at No. 89. Ladhani is 2-1 this season while Mok is 2-0.

There will be a free kids clinic following the match at the Boulder Country Club.

Article on today's win over the UNC Bears. Keep it up Buffs!
(Tomorrow's match against DU, who has also swept UNC this season, figures to be a bigger (but I'm sure still fun) challenge for CU.)

"
BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team swept the University of Northern Colorado, 7-0, Saturday afternoon in front of a packed crowd at the Boulder Country Club.

"It was definitely fun, I think we got the best crowd we have had so far this season," said head coach Danielle Steinberg on the win in front of the home crowd. "I keep telling the team if we do well we can build a really good home crowd here. It was good to play in the Boulder Country Club. I think it is really important to get out in the community and have the people that are not coming to RMTC know that there is a really good tennis team and build a larger support group. It was a little struggle for us to get use to the different atmosphere and courts so I think we started a little slow in singles, but as soon as we got comfortable we did very well."

Colorado (4-3) was led by a pair of upper classmen against Northern Colorado (3-3) in Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Monica Malinen that had game winning streaks of 10 and 11, respectfully, to take the No.1 and No.4 singles wins. The two also led the No. 3 and No. 1 doubles teams to 6-1 wins with Andrinopoulos joining Ky Ecton at the No.3 doubles match and Malinen joining Tallulah Farrow in the No. 1 doubles position.

"Both are very different," said Steinberg on the upper classmen. "Monica this is her first year here as well. She is more experienced but still new to CU. You can definitely see her experience in match play, closing out matches very quickly. Belle give us a ton for the team as far as real CU leadership. She has been her four years, knows everything, knows how things work, know how a season goes."
...

"We have nothing to lose going out there to their home court," said Steinberg on tomorrow. "Denver is always a good team and they are having a good year so far so we are just going to go out there and give 100 percent and have fun with it."

Colorado heads to Denver to take on the Pioneers tomorrow evening at 4:30 p.m. The Buffaloes then are on the road in New York and Idaho before returning to Boulder March 8 to open Pac-12 play against Washington.
"
________________________________________________________________________________________________

As also noted in an earlier post, live scoring for tomorrow afternoon's DU match should be available at http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=248393 .

(Hopefully nothing serious for her- senior (and lone returning Buff) Annabelle Andrinopoulos wasn't able to play today. As I mentioned in earlier posts, the team only has the bare minimum # (six) of players on the roster, which meant they had to forfeit one singles match, as well as one of three doubles matches.)

Best wishes to the tennis team up in Idaho. Hope they're getting and staying healthy.

Congrats to the team for the win today. (Good to see that all 6 on the roster were able to play doubles today.)

Best wishes to the tennis team as they start Pac 12 play hosting the Washington schools!

Hope some Allbuffians in the area can make it out to support the team.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team will open Pac-12 competition this weekend hosting No.7-ranked Washington Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. and No.28 Washington State Sunday at 10 a.m. in the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center.

The Buffaloes (6-6) last competed two weeks ago against South Dakota and Boise State. CU picked up its sixth win of the season against South Dakota by a score of 5-2, then were narrowly defeated by Boise State 4-3. Colorado did not compete last weekend after playing 12 matches in a four-week span.
...

Washington made a large jump from No.22 to No.7 last week after defeating then No.7-ranked Kansas. The Huskies are 10-1 this season with their only loss coming to then-ranked No.2 Vanderbilt. Stacey Fung leads the team as the 69th-ranked player in the nation. Her teammate Vanessa Wong is ranked 112th. Fung and Nika Zupancic also are ranked in the doubles rankings as the 43rd-best pair in the nation.

Washington State is led by Michaela Bayerlova, the 38th-ranked player in the nation. Hikaru Sato and Tiffany Mylonas have moved into the 71st position in the nation after not being ranked the week before. The Cougars are 13-2 this season with losses to Stanford and Gonzaga.

Following the Pac-12 opener the Buffaloes will play their final non-conference match at Colorado State on March 16th. Colorado returns home March 29 against Oregon.
