Tennis 2018/19 season news and results (At Pac 12 tournament starting 4/24)

I'd say a very respectable performance/ "moral victory" for a rebuilding Buff tennis team, as they win one match and win a couple sets and force a couple tie breakers in other matches before losing against a highly ranked Husky squad. Hope they can build off this the rest of the year, starting Sunday when they host the #28 cougars.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team put pressure on the No.7-ranked Washington Huskies Friday afternoon in the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center, but ultimately fell short in a 4-1 loss.

We did make some changes to the doubles lineup and it sparked some more aggressive play and more energy and I liked it. I just told the team that at home we can beat any team in the country. It doesn't matter how high ranked they are. We have a big advantage here with the altitude and with our home court advantage and we need to come out strong in every match, especially at home. Overall I am happy with the progress, happy with the way we came out mentally, moving onto Sunday another top-ranked team coming into town and we need to play them just as hard."

HUGE congrats to the team- with only one returning player after the coaching change and going with 4 freshmen (most late in the recruiting cycle commitments), didn't know if they'd have much success in the Pac 12, but looks like they're coming on strong!!!

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team picked up their first Pac-12 victory with a 4-3 upset of No.28-ranked Washington State Sunday afternoon in the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center.
This was the first ranked win for the program under the direction of head coach Danielle Steinberg, as well as the first ranked win since defeating No.41 Oregon in 2016. It is also the first top-30 win since 2007. Colorado improves to 7-7 this season while Washington State falls to 13-4.
"I think the best thing for me today was it was such a team," said Steinberg. "I think it was probably the first time since the beginning of the year that we played from top to bottom as a team. That means you finish your match and you go get involved in someone else's match and you want your teammates to win so badly, doesn't matter how your match went. We have been trying to work on it from the beginning of the year. We are such a young team and it takes time to learn that. You could tell today, they wanted it so bad and they wanted it for their teammates which was the best part."

"This win brings confidence," said Steinberg. "Because we are such a young team they went into the season not knowing how good they are, who they should beat and who they shouldn't beat. From now on every team we play against we know we have a chance, especially at home. It is no secret we have a huge home advantage that we need to take advantage of."
The Buffaloes return to action next weekend against in-state rivals Colorado State for the final non-conference competition of the season. The match begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 16 in Fort Collins.

Colorado (7-7, 1-1 Pac-12) is coming off an important weekend highlighted by the upset of then-ranked No.28 Washington State. The Buffs also picked up a point in a 4-1 loss to No.7 Washington that helped kickstart the confident play displayed Sunday in the upset of the Cougars.

The Rams this season are 7-4 with a Mountain West loss to UNLV as their only conference play. They were on a three-dual win streak when UNC Greensboro snapped it last Thursday in a 4-3 win. Prior to the loss, CSU had a 7-0 road win against North Dakota, then returned home to sweep Drake 7-0 and take down UTEP 5-2.
Following the match in Fort Collins, CU travels to head coach Danielle Steinberg's alma mater Arizona for her first Pac-12 dual against her former team. Colorado will also take on ASU in the trip then return home to close out the month of March against Oregon on March 29 at 1:30 p.m.

FORT COLLINS – The University of Colorado women's tennis team kept its 34-dual win streak against in-state rivals Colorado State intact after a 4-1 victory Saturday evening in the Fort Collins Country Club.
"I liked how we came out in doubles again," said head coach Danielle Steinberg. "The team is embracing everything we work on weekly and the high energy it takes to be a good doubles team and it pays off. In singles, Sara and Monica continued to play strong singles. Both are improving weekly and playing with a lot of confidence right now."
Colorado (8-7) is now 34-0 against CSU (7-5) since the first dual was played back in 1975. It is the longest win streak against an opponent in school history.
The match was clinched in dramatic fashion after freshman Megan Forster came back in the second set after being down 5-0. Forster rallied back with seven-straight games to take the win in the No.4 singles match against Priscilla Palermo after winning the first set 6-1.

For the first time this season, every match this weekend will feature ranked opponents on both sides of the net. The Buffaloes (8-7, 1-1 Pac-12) will play at Arizona (8-7, 0-4 Pac-12) at 2:30 p.m. (MT) Friday with freshman Sara Nayar moving into the ITA rankings at No.121 in singles play to lead the team. She, Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Monica Malinen will have their hands full on Saturday against Arizona State (5-8, 0-4 Pac-12), as the Sun Devils boast three ranked individuals.

Arizona, coach Steinberg's alma mater, have been a streaky team this season and share the same overall record as the Buffaloes at 8-7. The Wildcats started the dual season with three straight wins, then suffered the same amount of losses. After stringing five wins together, Arizona entered a downslide with four conference losses to USC, UCLA, Cal and Stanford. Arizona was unable to pick up a single point at Cal and No.4 Stanford, losing both 7-0. Arizona nearly upset No.6 UCLA at home but fell 4-3.
Arizona State has three individuals ranked in the ITA singles rankings with John-Baptiste at No.87, Hattingh at No.109 and Cali Jankowski at No.120. They also have two doubles teams ranked in the top-50, but despite their rankings are 5-8 this season. The Sun Devils have lost five-straight matches, beginning with a loss to No.11 Ohio State and followed with losses to UCLA, USC, Stanford and Cal. ASU has managed to score at least two points against all of their opponents on the drought, coming up short in a 4-3 match against both the Buckeyes and Trojans.
Colorado returns home next Friday, March 29, to take on Oregon at 1:30 p.m. at the CU South Campus Tennis Complex.

TUCSON – The University of Colorado women's tennis team rallied back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the University of Arizona, 4-3, here Friday afternoon.
With the win Colorado (9-7, 2-1 Pac-12) improves to 2-1 in the Pac-12 and have the best conference start since 2010. This also marks the first time in program history that Colorado has won back-to-back Pac-12 matches and it is just the second Pac-12 road win for the Buffaloes.
"I am so proud of the team for today," said head coach Danielle Steinberg. "This is our first outdoor match, after not getting much outdoor practice time, but our heart and fight was there in full force, and that made the difference at the end."
The Buffaloes had to make a pair of comebacks today against Arizona (8-8, 0-5 Pac-12) after falling in the No.2 doubles match to open the dual. Sara Nayar and Megan Forster fell 6-1 against Camila Wesbrooks and Gitte Heynemans, but Tallulah Farrow and Ky Ecton answered the call with a 6-2 win in the No.3 double match. The double team point came down to the No.1 doubles match with Monica Malinen and Annabelle Andrinopoulos needing a comeback after being down 5-4 against the No.47-ranked doubles team in the nation in Emma Wilson and Sophia Thomas. The Buffs won the next three games to secure the first doubles win against a ranked team this season for CU and take a 1-0 lead.
"We started doubles slow but once we get comfortable out there we got back to playing aggressive and taking the initiative," said Steinberg. "This is our third double point in a row and kudos for the team for going out there and taking it."

Note- Hard to ever know what's really going on injury-wise when not part of the team or knowing the person, but looks like senior Annabelle Andrinopoulos should be on her way to earning some "Heart of a Buffalo" type award. In addition to the above photo showing her ankle (???) on ice, I saw a group pic on Twitter early in the month that included her in a boot, so she's obviously not close to 100%, but has still been playing in almost all the matches. (A cubuffscom article or two have also noted she's "has been plagued early in the season with injury" (https://cubuffs.com/news/2019/3/13/tennis-colorado-takes-on-csu-saturday.aspx).) Best wishes to her "being on the mend".

Note- Hard to ever know what's really going on injury-wise when not part of the team or knowing the person, but looks like senior Annabelle Andrinopoulos should be on her way to earning some "Heart of a Buffalo" type award. In addition to the above photo showing her ankle (???) on ice, I saw a group pic on Twitter early in the month that included her in a boot, so she's obviously not close to 100%, but has still been playing in almost all the matches. (A cubuffscom article or two have also noted she's "has been plagued early in the season with injury" (https://cubuffs.com/news/2019/3/13/tennis-colorado-takes-on-csu-saturday.aspx).) Best wishes to her "being on the mend".

Looks like the Buffs lost a close one to asu today, as the sun devils win 4 matches/ points to 3.
Still a very nice effort by the young team (4 freshmen, 1 junior and 1 senior), and they have good reasons to have a positive mind-set through the rest of the season. (The Buffs have Oregon, Utah and all 4 California schools left to play in conference (regular season), and it looks like the CA schools constitute 4 of the 5 Pac teams (Dawgs being the 5th) ranked in the Top 25.)

The team has probably its most challenging weekend of the season as they head off to L.A. to face the #11 Trojans and #8 Bruins this Friday and Saturday. Also, looks like it's a rare opportunity for some TV exposure, as the USC match is on the Pac 12 Networks starting at 1:30 PM MT. (Looks like it's scheduled to end only an hour before the (also televised) Buff-trojan lacrosse game starts.)

An expected result against a Top 10 team, but winning a set in one match, while forcing a tie breaker in another, not too bad a performance. Hope they can keep on improving next weekend when they host two more ranked teams in the Bay Area schools (#5 trees and #19 bears).
Another sport, another Senior Day. The 2018/19 academic year sports year is definitely nearing a close (with of course still HUGE conference championships and so forth still pending for all the spring sports).

The Buffaloes (10-10, 3-4 Pac-12) take on Cal (10-6, 4-3 Pac-12) Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center. Sunday the team will honor senior Annabelle Andrinopoulos in the final home stand against Stanford (16-1, 7-0 Pac-12). The Stanford match is scheduled for 10 a.m. if the match is indoors at the RMTC but will be moved to 11 a.m. for better weather if the match remains outdoors.

The Buffaloes can jump the Bears with an upset but have their hands full with three ranked singles players and three ranked doubles pairs for Cal. Julia Rosenqvist leads the team with the No.33 ranking as a single and is joined by Hana Mraz for the No.16 doubles ranking. Olivia Hauger is ranked 42nd in the nation in single, while Anna Bright is ranked 119th. Bright and Jasie Dunk are the 27th-ranked tandem in the nation, while Mraz is also ranked with Katerina Stloukalova at 63rd in the doubles. Cal is 1-3 in their last four duals with 1-6 losses to USC and UCLA and a 3-4 loss to Washington. The team recovered for a 4-3 win against Washington State for their senior day.
Stanford, the defending national champions, comes into this matchup as the only team with more than five individuals ranked by the ITA. The Cardinal have seven ranked individuals and are tied with UCLA with four ranked doubles pairs. Michaela Gordon and Emily Arbuthnott are ranked in the top-30 at 21 and 27, respectfully. Melissa Lord is the 35th-ranked player with Caroline Lampl at 66th. Janice Shin is 77th and Emma Higuchi rounds out the top-100 for Stanford at 92. Sara Choy is the final player ranked 115th. In addition to those, Kimberly Yee joins Lampl for the 15th-best doubles pair. Yee also is ranked with Niluka Madurawe at 37th, giving Stanford nine players ranked by the ITA. Arbuthnott and Gordon are the 29th-best doubles pair and Lord and Madurawe are ranked 41st.
The Cardinal have only a single loss this season, a 4-3 loss to now No.2 Georgia. They have wins against then-ranked No.6 Texas, No.7 Vanderbilt, No.11 UCLA, No.16 USC, No. 36 Washington State and No.15 Washington. UCLA and USC were able to push the team to a 4-3 decision, as did Texas but those are the only times they have surrendered three points besides the one loss.

Nice effort by the team, but Cal has clinched the overall win as they're up 4-2 in matches.
Very solid performance by the Buffs, with wins at #1 and 3 singles. They also just lost the doubles point, as the deciding match was decided by a tie breaker in the Bears' favor.
