Figured, like for non-conference, I'll help keep one thread going for tennis throughout the Pac 12 regular season, which starts this Friday at 1:30 against Arizona, followed up by a Sunday match-up against #34 ASU. (Hope some All-Buffians in the area can make it to watch the team sometime this season!)

Best of luck to the racket- wielding Buffs against the Arizona schools this weekend!

BOULDER – Freshman Linda Huang has helped the Colorado women's tennis team to one of its best starts in program history, forging a 7-2 record and a No. 113 singles ranking herself thus far — 6-2 at No. 1 singles — to help the Buffs to a 7-2 start.

The Buffs are coming off a weekend sweep of New Mexico State and New Mexico and will open Pac-12 play this weekend with a pair of matches. CU hosts Arizona (8-5) on Friday at 1:30 p.m., followed by a Sunday match with No. 34-ranked Arizona State (7-3).

"Going into the season, especially Pac-12, it's going to get tougher and tougher, but we just have to take each match as it comes," Huang said.

A couple random notes from me-
  • At least as I'm writing this, kind of surprised there aren't more top ranked Pac teams. I always think of schools like Stanford, UCLA and USC being perennial Top 25 squads and title contenders, but as of now (http://www.itatennis.com/ResultsAnd..._s_National_Team_Rankings_-_March_6__2018.htm), looks like UCLA is the top ranked Pac team ("only" at #13), with Oregon (#21), Washington (#33), ASU (#34), Stanford (#46), USC (#47) and WSU (#50) further down the list. )
  • For those who didn't follow my non-conference thread, the Buffs have already had a tough break injury-wise, as #3 singles player (at least in the 1st match this spring season), junior Annabelle Andrinopouos, was injured in that 1st match and, it was subsequently announced, is out for the season. (This will be the 2nd year in a row, at minimum, for Buff injury issues. Last season, early #2 singles player Jeannez Daniel also suffered some type of injury and missed a large part of the season (including all of conference play). With the tennis roster only having 8 players, one now out, hopefully the rest of the team is being protected with bubble wrap so no more injuries or illnesses occur!)

Looks like it's 1-1, with Buff's taking the doubles point and AZ winning the 1st singles result.

Looks VERY close. Buffs won 4 of the 6 1st sets in singles, but in two of those they're down quite a bit (0-3 and 0-4) in the 2nd sets.
 
Buffs win a TIGHT one over Arizona 4-3! Way to go Buffs!

Looks like it would have been a fun competitive match to see live, with 4 of the singles matches going 3 sets, and the Buffs winning the last 2 matches, at #1 and 2 singles, by competitive 6-4 and 6-3 scores, respectively, to earn the tight win.

ASU next on Sunday.

Great start to the season for the Buffs as we're now 8-2 on the season with 11 more matches to go. I don't know how good the competition has been, but it's still notable since we've only finished above .500 once since 2008.
 

Looking at live scoring, Sun Devils showing up 3-2 overall now. In the 2 final matches, Buffs took the 1st set in Singles #5 6-1, but are down 0-4 in the second, In #6 singles, Buffs up 6-5 in the 1st set.

Looks like this one is going down to the wire, as the Buffs won #5 singles to tie the match count at 3 all. Looking like momentum may have to change for a Buffs victory, however, is ASU #6 is up 2-0 in the 3rd in the deciding match, and she won the 2nd set 6-1 after the Buff won a tight 1st set 7-5.
 
Buffs can't quite complete the upset, but still a great effort, and hopefully a good sign for the rest of the season.

BOULDER – Colorado's upset bid of 34th-ranked Arizona State fell short in the third set of the final singles match as the Buffs fell to the Sun Devils, 4-3. After Colorado (8-3 overall, 1-1 in the Pac-12) took an early 2-0 lead, Arizona State (9-3 overall, 2-0 in the Pac-12) rattled off three straight singles wins to go up 3-2. After tying the match at 3-3, CU could not complete the comeback in the clinching singles match on court No. 6.

"We battled really hard on Friday and we battled really hard today," said head coach Nicole Kenneally. "I think it's about keeping perspective that we came out here and performed. Obviously, it would have been great to get a win today. We put ourselves in good position today. We just need to keep putting ourselves in position and then keep having that belief that we're going to step up in those moments and take it when we have our opportunities."

A 2nd CLOSE loss in a row, as the Buffs lose 3-4 to Rice, with the deciding match a 5-7 loss in the 3rd set. Team gets to travel and rebound against the Bay Area schools this weekend.

BOULDER – The match came down to the third set of the final singles match, but the University of Colorado women's tennis team ran out of time, falling to the Rice Owls, 4-3, on Tuesday at the CU South Campus Tennis Courts.

"We were close, really close against a solid Rice team," said head coach Nicole Kenneally. "It went down to the wire again and Chloe [Hule] fought like a Rockstar, but just came up a little short. We have played three tough teams in five days and I am proud of how we continued to fight and compete even if we don't feel that we are playing as well as we would like."

The Buffs dropped to 8-4 on the season, while the Owls improved to 7-6.

In the clinching match in No. 2 singles, Hule came up short to Zhang, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 in a marathon singles match that lasted approximately four hours.

"We have to take the positives from today, evaluate what we could have done better and then move on as we have Cal and Stanford this weekend," said Kenneally. "We will rest up a little and then be ready for Friday."

Colorado hits the road this coming weekend to take on the California Bears on Friday at 2:30 p.m. MT the Hellman Tennis Complex. On Saturday at 1:00 p.m. MT, CU will face off against the Stanford Cardinal at Taube Family Tennis Stadium; the match will be available to watch on streamingtennis.com.

So with California's typical weather, evidently even the most prestigious west coast school doesn't have an indoor option when the weather doesn't cooperate.

BOULDER – Colorado's tennis team is currently sitting 8-5 overall and 1-2 through three Pac-12 matches. Those numbers, while solid, may not open too many eyes until you look deeper into the stats, particularly at the scores and the opponents the Buffs have played, and compare those to the team's recent results from past seasons.

As a product of the strong play early in the season, CU could be in line for its first .500 season since going 11-11 in 2015, and its first over-.500 season since a 12-10 finish in 2009.

Here are some key notes on CU's improvement this season:
  • The Buffs defeated Arizona 4-3 to open Pac-12 play on March 9 for just the third time since joining the Pac-12 in 2012
  • The win over Arizona was the first time CU has opened conference play with a win since 2009 in the Big 12
  • CU suffered a 4-3 loss to 34th-ranked Arizona State on March 11, the first time the Buffs have earned three points vs. the Sun Devils since 2012
  • CU lost 4-2 to California on March 16 and the two points were the most CU has ever earned in a match against Cal (the Buffs are 0-7 all-time vs. the Golden Bears)

The key to Colorado's improvement this season has been the team's depth, and that comes despite No. 3 singles player Annabelle Andrinopoulos suffering a season-ending injury in the season-opener on Jan. 20. The Buffs have been strong in the back of the lineup as the team has a 7-5 record at both No. 5 and No. 6 singles. CU hasn't had a winning record at either of those positions since 2009.

"For several years we had great production from Nos. 1-2-3 in the lineup with limited results at Nos. 4-5-6," head coach Nicole Kenneally said. "This year, definitely 4-5-6 have stepped up and I think that just comes to the part of recruiting and recruiting players that you believe are going to come in and play in your top four. But only four can play in the top four, [increasing the level of play at the final two spots]."

Kenneally believes this year's team is a more cohesive unit than in years past. The group is more competitive at practice between teammates.
"The group is continuing to learn," Kenneally said. "They got the idea and the grasp last year, but I think it's been less of an issue with regards to competing against your teammates. So when we're out here in practice, we're competing at a higher level in a lot more things compared to what we had previously when people didn't want to go up against a teammate. Now there's the understanding that, maybe it comes with maturity, that, 'hey look, I'm competing against my teammate so I can compete against my opponent.' I think there's just a mentality shift there."
The Buffs look to take that new competitiveness on the road next weekend as they take on 47th-ranked Washington on Friday, March 30, and No. 39 Washington State on Sunday, April 1. They return home on Friday, April 6, to take on No. 41 Southern California.

BOULDER – After four straight road matches, the University of Colorado women's tennis team returns home to Boulder to host the No. 40-ranked Southern California Trojans (9-7 overall, 2-3 in the Pac-12) and the 14th-ranked UCLA Bruins (12-4 overall, 4-1 in the Pac-12).
Last weekend, the Buffaloes were defeated by 40th-ranked Washington and No. 31-ranked Washington State, each by a score of 4-0.

CU (8-11 overall, 1-7 Pac-12) has struggled of late, dropping its past nine matches. Freshman Linda Huang highlighted this past week's matches, earning her second win this season over a ranked opponent when she upset 52nd-ranked Julia O'Loughlin in the team's 4-1 loss to Denver on Tuesday.

Utah (10-12, 1-8 Pac-12) is riding a three-match losing streak, all coming against ranked opponents. The Utes have the 65th-ranked doubles team in the country as Alexis Petrovic and Jena Cheng carry an 8-5 record this season and have upset three other ranked opponents. Petrovic holds Utah's No. 1 singles position as well, posting an 8-9 record.
