Sounds like a schedule will be out soon, so decided to start this consolidated pre- and regular-season thread now. Although the "real" NCAA and Pac 12 Championship season is in the spring, they compete in MANY tournaments in the fall.

I plan on us using this thread for all tennis news and results until the Pac 12 championships get their own thread. (Last season, they were in late April.)

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Edit- The team has released its full schedule. For convenience, here it is:

Scheduled Games

  • CSU John Mesisck Invitational Sep 28 (Sat) - Sep 29 (Sun)
  • ITA All-American Championship Tulsa, Okla.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis program will begin the 2019 fall season this weekend in Texas at the Rice Fall Invitational this Friday and Saturday.

The tournament will feature nearly 80 players from 13 different schools; Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Colorado, Houston, North Texas, Rice, Sam Houston, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Texas State, USF, UTA and UTSA.

Five Buffs will be making the trip south, led by No. 65-ranked Sara Nayar. She will be joined by Monica Malinen and Tallulah Farrow from last year's squad, along with freshmen Maria Campos and Antonia Balzert. Campos is a Texas native, while this will be Balzert's first tennis action in the states for Colorado.

In addition to the Rice tournament, a pair of Buffaloes will head to Fort Collins to compete at a tournament at CSU. Fort Collins native Ky Ecton will be joined by Ellie Puzak in her first action for CU.

Colorado is in its second season with Head Coach Danielle Steinberg. In her first season she led the Buffs to the most Pac-12 wins in a season and ended the season ranked in the top-75 in the nation.

End of the fall season for the tennis Buffs this weekend.

"
BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team will close out the 2019 fall season this week when Sara Nayar competes in the ITA National Fall Championships starting Wednesday in Newport Beach, Calif., while the rest of her teammates will compete in the Rebel Invitational at UNLV in Las Vegas beginning Friday, Nov. 8.

This is the third ITA sanctioned championship for Nayar this fall after competing in the ITA All-Americans Championship and finishing as the runner-up at the ITA Mountain Regional Championship. She is 5-5 this season in singles matches including four matches against top-100 players. She is also 6-3 in doubles matches with Monica Malinen.

Colorado will also be competing in Las Vegas at the UNLV Rebel Invitational that will feature the season debut of Megan Forster. The sophomore missed the first part of the season due to injury but will be joined everyone in the squad.

...

After winter break, Colorado returns to action in Fresno, Calif., against Southern Utah for the dual opener and then Fresno State on Jan. 17 and 19, respectfully. The team opens home competition and puts their 34-dual streak on the line against Colorado State Jan. 24.

Especially with it being a quiet (holiday!) time for all the sports, figured I'd start posting these Top Moments of 2019 tweets being released by cubuffs.com in the relevant threads.

BOULDER – The University of Colorado tennis program heads to Fresno, Calif., this weekend to take on Southern Utah and Fresno State Friday and Sunday, respectfully.

The Buffaloes open the 2020 dual season against Southern Utah Friday at noon in the second season under head coach Danielle Steinberg. The team will look to build off the success that was had last year when the team had just six players throughout the spring. CU now boasts nine student-athletes including four freshmen.

Colorado had a successful fall season with Sara Nayar and Monica Malinen leading the way as the two finished ranked in doubles with a 6-9 overall record that included a pair of top-40 wins. Nayar was also the ITA Mountain Regional Runner-up and finished the season in the ITA Fall National Championship.

The newcomers have had a strong presence in the fall that began with Maria Campos winning her flight of the Rice Fall Invitational and finished with Sophia Derivan and Ellie Puzak both winning their flights at the Husky Invitational.

Colorado returns home the following weekend with a pair of in-state rivals coming to Boulder. The Buffs put their win streak on the line against CSU Friday at 2 p.m. and then host Air Force 24 hours later. Both matches will be played at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center and are free to the public.

Note - As I type this, I can't find any sure links for either live scores or any live streams.
(I did find a live scoring link from last year, but have no idea if it will work this season or not - http://sidearmstats.com/fresnostate/wten/xlive.htm )

Wanted to note the link I posted in my last post is NOT working for live scores. Also haven't seen any updates in Buff tennis Twitter so far. Hope the season is starting off strong!

Sounds like a solid start, as the Buffs didn't lose a set, even while missing 2 of their key players in singles, and last year's #1 didn't play at all. (Hope it's not injury-related or, if it is, it's nothing significant.)

Tomorrow will I'm sure be a tougher challenge against the host bulldogs.

Looks like their is live scoring for today's match, and the Buffs did get the doubles point by a narrow margin (they lost #1 doubles, but won #2 and 3 by 7-5 scores)!
(No single scores showing yet, but assume they'll be starting any minute now.)

Edit- Thanks to Fresno State's Twitter for a video of what looked like the point that clinched the Buff's earning the doubles point-

It looks like it was a tough early season battle (2 of the Buff single wins took 3 sets, and as I'd mentioned, the doubles point was tightly contested), but per the live scoring link, the Buffs got the win 4-2. (They were also up 4-2 in the 3rd set of the one unfinished match (#1 singles).)

Congrats to the team!

Congrats again to the team- now on to host a couple local schools next weekend- the Rams this Friday and then Air Force Saturday!
(Assume this Buff team will/ should be heavily motivated NOT to become the 1st women's tennis team to ever lose to CSU, as the CU program has a 34-0 lifetime record against them. Then, assume they'll also be hungry against the Air Force, as the later defeated the Buffs down in Colorado Springs last year in a close 3-4 battle, only the 2nd time the Buffs had lost to them in 20 tries.)

Article after today's victory-

"
FRESNO, Calif. – It didn't take long for the freshmen class to make a difference for the University of Colorado women's tennis program as three youngsters picked up key singles victories in a 4-2 defeat of Fresno State here Sunday afternoon.

"Today was a great college match," said Head Coach Danielle Steinberg. "Credit to Fresno for coming out strong and forcing us to step up. Having such close matches early on is the best way to reveal and build a team's character. I'm very pleased we stepped up and were up for the challenge."

In just their second dual in a CU uniform, Antonia Balzert, Sophia Derivan and Maria Campos stepped up big to take down Fresno State, including Campos who sealed the victory. Balzert extended Colorado's lead after the team picked up the doubles point by taking down Deniza Marcinkevica 6-3, 6-2 for the first singles victory. The Bulldogs tied up the match at 2-2 then Derivan put the Buffs up with a victory in the No.5 singles match. The freshman took the first set 6-4 before dropping the second 6-3. She recovered with power as she stormed away to a 6-1 third set win to put CU up 3-2.
...

"I wanted the team to play outdoors and in low altitude early on," said Steinberg. "We need to be able to play our best tennis wherever we are in the country, regardless of the conditions. Again, challenging the team early on will just make us tougher down the road."

Colorado returns home to prepare for a pair of in-state matches against CSU Friday at 2 p.m. followed up by Air Force Saturday at 2 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center.

Hope some folks in the area can go and root on the team this weekend. (From a tweet a day or two ago by CU Turf, sounds like they are, at minimum, considering hosting one or both matches outside (assume at their normal South Campus facility); pretty awesome option for late January!)

(Great to see last season's #1 player Sara Nayer in the video and in Buff (it looks like) training gear. Hopefully she can play this weekend after not playing last week in Fresno.)

The Buffs come back strong after losing the doubles point and having a couple tough starts in their 1st sets to clinch the W over the Rams.

Congrats Buffs!

Article on today's match (Interesting they aren't sure of tomorrow's match location or time yet.) -

"
BOULDER – The Colorado tennis team kept the school's longest win streak intact Friday afternoon with a 6-1 victory against Colorado State University here.

"We're still kind of experimenting with our doubles lineup, we still have a lot of work to do, obviously," said Head Coach Danielle Steinberg. "We're not always going to be able to come back in singles and win all six points so doubles is definitely a priority for us. Hopefully tomorrow we come out a little better and a little more aggressive, be able to win the doubles point. I'm very happy how we came out with singles. Monica dropping the first set but then really getting it together and winning those two sets at the end was huge. I think everyone did a really good job. It was fun being at home for the first time."

The team had to come together after dropping the doubles point but began taking set after set to extend the win streak to 35-0 against the Rams all-time.
...

Colorado takes on Air Force Saturday, though the location and time is still fluid. Check for updates on the CUBuffsTennis Twitter account as the teams decide on whether to play outside or indoors.

Looks like Air Force's women's tennis team is one of its stronger one's. (Looks like they ended up ranked #4 in the Mountain Region at the end of last season while the Buffs were #10. For reference, DU was #1.)

A couple chances to catch the team at home this Saturday!

Go BUFFS!!!

(For reference (obviously VERY early in the season), their schedules show the Broncos are 2-0 (https://broncosports.com/sports/womens-tennis/schedule) and Bears 0-2 (https://uncbears.com/sports/womens-tennis/schedule/2019-20) so far.)

Preview-

"
BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team hosts a rare double-header Saturday against Boise State at 10 a.m. and Northern Colorado at 3 p.m. in the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center.

The Buffaloes (3-1) are coming off their first loss of the season in an outdoor match against Air Force last Saturday. The team went 6-1 against CSU the day before, then had the score reversed on them by the Falcons. The team has been without sophomore star Sara Nayar in singles matches as she works back into form in doubles matches.

Colorado has been led by a group of freshmen, including Sophia Derivan who went 2-0 last weekend in singles matches. She finished the weekend 3-0 overall including a doubles win against CSU and a match-clinching win in singles against CSU.

This will be the last home match for a few weeks as the Buffs take to the road in Texas and Iowa for four matches through the first three weeks of February. Colorado returns to competition in Boulder against Wyoming Feb. 22 at noon.

The team's double header day began at 10:00.

Looks like they won the doubles point against the Broncos, but are down relatively EARLY in 2 of the 3 singles matches that have started.
