LONG BEACH, Calif. - A trio of University of Colorado women's tennis players successfully began the 2013 spring season with singles victories at the three-day Long Beach State Tennis Winter Invitational. CU played the host 49ers in four doubles matches, then later in the day played New Mexico in a round robin singles format. Also participating in the invitational is Nevada. Juniors Winde Janssens and Carla Manzi Tenorio, and freshman Dhany Quevedo began their respective singles matches of the 2013 season with victories. Janssens won her third match in her last four matches dating back to the fall campaign defeating Maria Sabina of New Mexico, 7-6(5), 6-3. Manzi Tenorio tallied her fourth win of the year in eight attempts defeating UNM's Katie Wookey, 6-3, 6-3. Also picking up a win was Dhany Quevedo. The first semester freshman from Venezuela rallied from a set down to defeat New Mexico's Nikolina Grbac, 6-7(5), 6-0, 6-2. It was Quevedo's first collegiate win as a Buff. "We had solid performances in the singles, fighting hard and working through our ups and down in the first match of the year," said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. "It was good to have Dhany on campus and playing with the team. She rebounded very well after coming up short in her first set. We're looking forward to continuing her development." In CU's other three singles matches against the Lobos, sophomore Julyette Steur fell in three sets to No. 74 Michaela Bezdickova 7-5, 1-6, 6-4; junior Mattison Sperry came up short against Laura Richardson 7-6(7), 6-4; and freshman Laura Wegleitner fell to Michaela Oldaniu, 6-1, 6-3. In doubles, the Buffaloes dropped all four matches to the host 49ers. It's the second year of the 49er Invitational with the Buffs, Nevada, and New Mexico participating in a staggered round robin, in which each team will face the other in both singles and doubles, but not in a team format. Individual matches will count similar to fall action, but all players will be available to play in a warm-up for the spring dual season. Saturday, the 49ers will play New Mexico in doubles before taking on the Buffaloes in singles. Finally, on Sunday, CU will play New Mexico.
