The Mtn Sports Network - Going off air in June

Can somebody fill me in on what teams are still in the Mountain West? Didn't Boise already leave? SDSU? I know BYU is gone and obviously Utah and TCU. The only schools I can think of that are still in the conference are WYO, CSU, Air Force and New Mexico. There has to be more than that, though. Right? Hawaii maybe? Fresno?

Hawaii, Fresno State and Nevada are coming in. You also missed UNLV. That puts them at 8.

I would expect Utah State and San Jose State to get to 10. That would effectively end the WAC as a football-playing conference.

They didn't get enough viewership to justify the expense of running the network. They aren't going to get any big money from any networks for the rights to the games that the Mtn was carrying. There is a reason these games were on the Mtn. The games that anyone outside of the small fan bases for those schools want to see are already on their other contracts such as CBS Sports. These games are not going to be a revenue source but they may come out a little ahead eliminating the expense of running the Mtn.

The problem for the MWC is that the schools that make up the conference are either secondary schools in the markets they are in (CSU, behind AFA, which is behind CU and of course the Broncos and probably kNU and a few other schools, or Utah State which is at best #3 in Utah, or Fresno which is behind a lot of teams in Calif) or first in markets that are to small to matter like Wyo.

They aren't going to draw big TV dollars when their entire conference has less TV appeal than a school like aTm or Mich State which aren't even first in their own states.

I understand that Suzie (Medusa) Wardgin will film all CSU games on a hand-held camera and then show the tape delay on a PBS channel at 1:45 AM the following Sunday.

that reminds me. I talked to direct tv about them getting the PAC and they guy said he still hasn't heard anything. This was just some phone monkey, but no official anything on the internal website he checked (menu and hours for McDonalds)

Email from DTV today:

Thanks for writing. I see that you've been with us for many years and I would like to let you know that we appreciate your business.

We don't carry PAC 12 Network right now and we don't currently have plans to add it to our lineup. I have, however, forwarded your email on to our management so that they can have a record of your request.

We know you have a choice when it comes to programming providers, and we must work hard to earn your business. We promise that we will continue to develop the unique, innovative programming and services that you expect and will definitely enjoy from DIRECTV.

at some point those of us that have direct tv are going to have to bombard them with letters, calls and email so they can see we are serious about getting the PAC:12 network added.

The desperation on the part of TV networks for content that is not usually recorded (sports) is crazy. I think this may actually be a benefit for the MWC. They have an opportunity to negotiate a deal better than their own network. They are not going to get BCS conference type of money but they will probably be okay.

Very true. I saw a tweet this week that cable lost 1 million subscribers this year and the main thing that kept it from being much worse is live sporting events.

At our house we watch almost no live TV....Recorded show (ff through the commercial), streaming, etc. Sports are about it. As bandwidth gets more better tradition delivery is going to be challenged.

Watching a Mtn broadcast was like being back in the 80s trying to watch scrambled porn on cable. We're not losing anything if we have to just listen on the radio.

Oh. I thought that it actually was scrambled porn out on channel 899 or something on comcast. Although I guess if it actually had been, they might have gotten better ratings...

I would have already shut off our DirecTV if it weren't for college & pro football and the NBA playoffs. Just counting the days until those events can be streamed, then it's gonzo to paying $100+/month for a service that was OTA and free when I was a kid.

I just sent my letter to DTV. I really like the system and have been a customer for 10+ years. I did let them know that I have other options and that the PAC-12 Network is a deal breaker. Awaiting canned response.

I am glad the Mountain is no more. They blacked me out a few years ago. I have Dish, didn't get to watch the game against CSU.

DirecTV will pick it up. I mean, they did the same thing with The Mtn. They, IMO, are angling for the very best deal they can get.

It's still over the air and free, if you want 5 channels and to be at the mercy of a broadcast signal and an antenna. Of course, if you want more than 1 game on the air at a time, or to be able to watch something other than the normal network crap, you still have the option of paying extra for it.

Sort of. ABC puts a lot of stuff that would have been on the main network in the past onto ESPN. Fox does the same with Root & FSN.

It's not like you're going to see many Avs, Rockies, Nugs or CU games televised unless you pay for cable. And you'd also miss the Broncos if they're playing on a Monday or Thursday night.
