Tomorrow the men's and women's teams begin track and field championships season with the Big 12 Championships, this year hosted by KU in Lawrence. After that, NCAA West Regionals begin near the end of the month in College Station, TX, and then the Championships, as almost always in Eugene, take place in mid-June.

Plan on using this thread so we can update as the meets unfold.

Since the Big 12's, in addition to being big in their own right, are also the last opportunity for student-athletes to earn or improve their NCAA Regional qualifying positions. Copying from the regular season thread, here are the rules for NCAA qualifying and links to the data showing top results:

"
Wanted to add links to the official web pages where outdoor season bests are kept. This is important because, as from what I've read (see http://www.ustfccca.org/meets-results/ncaa-championship-qualifying-criteria#d1OTF or https://www.ncaa.com/championships/trackfield-outdoor/d1/road-to-the-championships for the full qualifying procedures.) -
  • For multi-event athletes, the top 24 marks in the country by a designated date (usually right after conference championships complete for all the teams) for each gender get to go to the NCAA championships and
  • For all other individual events, the top 48 marks, distances or heights in each preliminary region (west and east) by athletes who accept entry for each event by a designated date (usually right after conference championships complete for all the teams) get to go to the NCAA preliminaries to try and qualify for the championships.
  • For the 4X100M and 4X400 meter relays, it's the Top 24 times who accept entry in each of the 2 regions that qualify for the preliminaries.

The Buffs will return to action at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor West Preliminary Championships, hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. The top 48 athletes in the region will qualify, while the top 24 nationally in the decathlon and heptathlon will earn automatic bids to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
"

List of Buffs currently in the top 48 in their events in the West Region which, except for multi-events***, would qualify them for Regionals -

(***As noted in the original post, the top 24 in the multi-events qualify directly to the Championship finals and don't compete at regionals, so top 48 doesn't mean anything for qualification purposes. Currently Nick Bianco is the only CU multi-eventer qualified as he's in 15th nationwide, while John Swibek is just out of it in 27th. Eva Bruce will need a great score at Conference as she's 52nd on the women's side. I would say to that I'd assume all will be shooting to improve their overall score, as conference championships are often what athletes are trying to peak for, so I'd expect many athletes to set PR's in the MANY conference championships being competed this weekend.)

The 3rd and final day of the Championships has begun, with field events already started and track action scheduled to begin around 4:00 PM MT. I'd say so far it's been a decent performance overall for the rebuilding Buffs, with some nice point scoring and all-conference performances, led by sophomore Abbey Nechanicky's podium earning 3rd place finish in Thursday night's women's 10,000M run, and 5 men who earned points with top 8 finishes. And, even some Buffs who couldn't quite qualify for finals still had PR's, so assume should be OK with their performances.

Nechanicky Brings Home Bronze on Day One of Big 12 Championships

Gustavo and Libert earns All-Conference honors

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Colorado track and field team wrapped up the first day of competition Thursday at the 2025 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted at Rock Chalk Park.

After just missing the podium at last year's Pac-12 Championships, Abbey Nechanicky broke through with a bronze medal in the women's 10,000-meter final. Nechanicky clocked 33:51.54 to place third and earn All-Big 12 honors, scoring six points for the Buffs.

On the men's side, Gustavo Alfonso added a personal best of 64.78 meters in the javelin to place seventh and secure All-Big 12 honors, adding two points to CU's total. Jake Liebert also earned All-Big 12 recognition with an eighth-place finish in the 10,000-meter final, contributing one point for the Buffs.

The day also featured preliminary action in the 1,500 meters, 200 meters, and 400-meter hurdles, along with the start of the decathlon and heptathlon.

Cole Romig advanced to the next round of the 400-meter hurdles after qualifying on time with a mark of 50.98.

Bianco, Mathison Earn All-Big 12 Honors on Day Two in Lawrence

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

LAWRENCE, Kan.
— The Colorado Buffaloes wrapped up day two of the 2025 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at Rock Chalk Park with several strong performances, including a pair of All-Big 12 finishes and a finals qualifier in the 800 meters.

Nick Bianco climbed from 10th place to finish fifth in the decathlon, earning All-Big 12 honors. His performance was highlighted by a second-place finish in the pole vault (5.01m) and a time of 4:36.64 in the 1,500 meters to close out the competition.

Kole Mathison earned All-Big 12 honors in the steeplechase with a fifth-place finish in 8:41.62, staying with the front pack throughout the race.

Drew Costelow ran a personal best of 1:49.40 in the 800 meters, qualifying for the final based on time.

In the heptathlon, Eva Bruce, Riley Burkey and Ava Goetz completed day two of competition. Burkey closed with the fastest time in the 800 meters (2:12.22), while Bruce recorded a personal best of 2:16.32.

Helen Carlson ran a personal best of 2:07.17 in the women's 800 meters, placing 10th and narrowly missing the final.
...

The team finished off the Championships with a few more nice All-conference performances.
(Of course hopefully, as a fan, I hope and anticipate the newer coaches on the distance running side continue to develop and find new talent and the coaches in the other event groups keep finding and developing their student-athletes so that the teams don't both finish last overall as they did at these (admittedly VERY competitive) conference's championships.)

The list of qualified and declared athletes for the Regionals was released today, and I went in and was able to find quite a few links about various info for the Western region. (I've put the links and info near the bottom of the original post.)

Both of the regionals are scheduled to begin next Wednesday.

The Regionals have begun today, with the 1st Buff scheduled to start his competition (in the javelin) in less than a couple hours, and assume the times below are already now innacurate. (As noted in the OP, field events began at 9:00 MT while action on the track is scheduled to begin at 5:00 MT, the later of which is also when an ESPN+ video stream begins (available of course for those with a subscription to that service).

Note - College Station is showing a high chance of rain mid-afternoon with thunderstorms today, so in addition to at least 2 weather delays that have already occurred (per A&M social media) assume there's a GOOD (or bad in this context) chance of weather delays for much of the day. (Looks like the 2nd weather delay may still be in process. Hope the athletes, especially those with any scheduled late start times, are ready for potentially a LATE night (or maybe even early morning?) start.)

Go Buffs!

The Buffs are now done with 3 of the 4 days at regionals, and it's been pretty quiet, at least qualifying-wise, with no Buffs making it to the finals in Eugene*** from this meet UNTIL TODAY.

Congrats to sophomore men's steeplechaser Kole Mathison, who set his personal best (8:32.74) today at the BEST time to extend his season as the top time qualifier in today's 3 heat steeple competition!
(He's getting closer and closer to a pretty old Buff record, as Steve Slattery still holds the top mark at 8:26.45 from a race in 2001. I can't see where cubuffs.com has an outdoor top 10 Buffs for each event like they have in the past (it only has an indoor top 10 right now), so don't know where Mr. Mathison's time places him as a Buff all-time.

I'd GUESS (???) his PR was also this season, in which case he shaved almost 5 seconds off his previous best time, so he seems to be trending great.)

(***Nick Blanco has also already clinched a spot, in his case in the decathlon, in Eugene, but that is the one men's event that's not competed at regionals, as qualifying is based on the top 24 scores attained throughout the season.)

This makes me sad. Because of the changes with NIL, CU is going to focus on distance runners and cross country

H
yeah. It is very sad. Buff club needs to step up and actually act like a p4 fund raising organization.

I'm done donating to the Buff Club. College sports are now professional sports and I'm chosing not to participate with my money.

That's where I'm at. It's like if the Broncos asked me for a donation so they could do a facility upgrade. Not a chance I'm writing a check.

The Championships begin tomorrow, with the 2 Buff men who are repping the team this year both starting their competitions tomorrow.

Note - I will be adding major Championship links and so forth at the bottom of the original post.

Sko Buffs!

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

EUGENE, Ore. — The University of Colorado track and field program will be represented by two athletes at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, set for June 11–14 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Nick Bianco will be the first to compete, opening the decathlon with the 100-meter dash at noon PT on Wednesday, June 11, followed by the long jump, shot put, and high jump, and will wrap up day one with the 400-meter dash. Day two begins at 9:45 a.m. PT on Thursday, June 12, with the 110-meter hurdles, followed by the discus, pole vault, and javelin, and concludes with the 1,500-meter run.

Bianco qualified for the championships by breaking the CU decathlon school record, scoring 7,655 points at the Bryan Clay.

Invitational on April 10–11. He recorded personal bests in the 100 meters, long jump, shot put, discus, and 1,500 meters during that competition. Bianco remained among the nation's top 10 for most of the season, finishing the regular season ranked No. 22.

Kole Mathison will compete in the semifinal of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, scheduled for 4:38 p.m. PT on Wednesday, June 11. The top 12 finishers (the top five in each heat, plus the following two overall best times) will advance to the final on Friday, June 13.

Mathison secured his spot in Eugene with a personal-best time of 8:32.74 at the NCAA West Preliminary Round, earning an at-large qualifying bid. Earlier in the season, he ran a then personal best of 8:37.68 to place third at the Raleigh Relays a time that held up and qualified for regional.

All events will be streamed live on ESPN+. Fans can follow live results at Flash Results

Casey and Lindsay Malone are no longer officially coaches of the throws. Lindsay is going to the championship to coach Nick Bianco. She has been his coach through his collegiate career. I'm happy she is there for him despite no longer being employed by CU.

CU Outdoor Track and Field 2025 Season Concludes at NCAA Championships
June 12, 2025 | Track and Field

By: Herman Shelton, Associate Director/Athletic Communications

EUGENE, Ore. - Colorado's Nick Bianco capped off his career in black and gold with a strong showing at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday at historic Hayward Field.

Bianco, noted for his strength on the second day of combined events, hovered near personal bests in almost every discipline and closed the decathlon with a personal best in the 1,500 meters, clocking 4:26.18. He totaled 7,651 points, just four points shy of his own school record.

The senior departs as one of the most decorated multi event athletes in program history, holding both the indoor heptathlon and outdoor decathlon records along with numerous top ten marks across indoor and outdoor competitions.

Day Two Results

110 m hurdles - 14.55
Discus - 38.53 m (126-5)
Pole vault - 5.01 m
Javelin - 53.46 m
1,500 m - 4:26.18 (personal best)

Final score: 7,651 points

With Bianco's finish, Colorado wraps its NCAA slate for 2025. Several Buffs are slated to compete at the USA Track and Field Olympic Team Trials, set for July 31-Aug. 3, in a bid to qualify for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, Sept. 13-21.

Congratulations, NIck! He is an All American in the Decathalon and Coach Lindsay Malone was there coarching and cheering for him.

other schools are defunding track and field. WSU cut the field part of the team and while I heard from a Baylor guy they let 9 assistants go in their olympic sports. I have a feeling it is just beginning

It's apparently what student-athletes wanted by bringing the court case.
I honestly don't think they thought that much about what would happen. These athletes think the schools have unlimited money and can afford anything.

Agree. The Olympic athlets are going to find out the athletes in the big sports don't care about them.
