Cubuffs.com article now out about the Buffs at the Trials, and also describes how the new indoor practice facility has been helping out athletes' training- http://www.cubuffs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=211041915.

As noted in the thread title, the Championships go from July 1st through the 10th, and are being held in Eugene Oregon. Only 3 days until they start!

(Decided to start this new thread for the actual trials. An earlier thread covered a few aspects leading up to the trials- http://www.allbuffs.com/threads/buf...ympic-trials-being-held-july-1st-10th.116980/ .)
____________________________________________________________

2 Paragraphs from the above- linked article that gives an updated list of most Buffs competing. (It doesn't seem to mention Buff alum Joe Morris who I noted in a post in another thread as qualifying and running the 100 meter sprint, but as far as I can see it looks like he IS competing.)-

"
...
(Jenny) Simpson, who will run the 1,500 meters, is one of eight former and current Buffs who will compete at the trials training under CU coaches Mark Wetmore and Heather Burroughs. The other former Buffs working with Wetmore and Burroughs include Emma Coburn (vying for her second trip to the Olympics in the steeplechase), Shalaya Kipp (also seeking her second Olympic berth in the steeplechase), Jessica Tebo (5,000), Sara Sutherland (1,500) and Aric Van Halen (steeplechase). Also, two current members of the Buffs track team, Erin Clark (steeplechase) and Ben Saarel (1,500) will be making their first Olympic Trials appearances.

Other competitors in Eugene with CU ties will be current CU assistant coach Casey Malone (a two-time discus Olympian who will be competing in his record 21st consecutive U.S. National Championships), Emily Hunsucker (hammer throw), Sara Vaughn (1,500), Laura Thweatt (5,000 and 10,000) and Sara Slattery (10,000).

Article now out about the trials with start times for the various Buffs and Buff alums events/ races- http://www.cubuffs.com/news/2016/6/...set-to-compete-at-us-olympic-team-trials.aspx. (I'll also put in OP.)

Looks like the Buff-related action starts on Saturday the 2nd, with Laura Thweatt in the finals of the 10,000 meter run starting at 12:04 Mountain Time (MT), and Joe Morris in the 1st (of 3) rounds of the 100M starting at 2:01 MT.

One paragraph from the article re the Buff's success at the trials overall-
"Since 1948, the CU track and field program has produced 30 Olympians. Most impressively, the Buffs have earned 17 berths, nine women and eight men, since 2000, in middle and long distance events, more than any other collegiate program. The next closest to CU is Stanford and North Carolina at eight."

Joe Morris does well to start his meet, as he advances past the 1st round of the 100M with a 2nd place finish in heat 1.

So, 4 Buffs try to qualify early this evening for the steeplechase finals, with the races scheduled to be shown on NBC Sports Net!

(Per the start list for the day at http://www.usatf.org/usatf/files/ea/eadb84fd-7f96-4ae1-ab3d-364289827e03.pdf?avad=55097_bbaa2ef7 , looks like all 3 Buffs are in Heat 3 of 3, and are starting next to each other in the outer-most lanes. Top 3 finishers of each heat auto-qualify, with next 5 fastest times also earning a spot into Thursday's final.)

(Per the same start list linked to above, Mr. Van Halen*** is in heat 2 of 2. Top 5 finishers of each heat auto-qualify, with next 4 fastest times also qualifying for Friday's final.
*** For trivia "Buffs", Mr. Van Halen IS part of THAT Van Halen family, being the son of drummer Alex (per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Van_Halen ).)

Added another link to the OP to find various video streams available, namely http://www.nbcolympics.com/video . (For example, NBCSN starts covering the Trials at 5:00 this evening, but there is an extra 30 minutes of stream-only viewing (based on the schedule for all the pole vault aficionados out there) available starting at 4:30 MT this evening.)

Note- as also shown on the overall schedule noted in the OP, tomorrow is a rest day at the trials, with no events being held.

Congrats to Buff alums Emma Coburn and Shalaya Kipp for both auto-qualifying for Thursday's steeplechase final, with Ms. Coburn winning and Ms. Kipp finishing in 3rd in Heat #3.

Current Buff Erin Clark doesn't qualify in what was probably always considered a great learning opportunity for her, finishing 23rd overall with a decent 10:00 time for her after LONG and overall VERY successful collegiate cross country and track seasons.
Edit-

Unofficially, looks like maybe a HEARTBREAKING finish for Aric Van Halen, as he's the runner with the 1st or 2nd best time to NOT qualify for the finals. He looked to be in pretty good shape for an auto-qualifying 5th place finish in Heat #2, but stumbled badly when landing after the FINAL water jump, ~150 yards from the finish.

Still overall a promising year for a still young Buff alum.

Article now available covering today's action at http://cubuffs.com/news/2016/7/4/tr...ce-to-olympic-trials-steeplechase-finals.aspx .

With tomorrow being a rest day, overall and of course then also for the Buffs, action starts again Wednesday. For the Buffs, alum Emily Hunsucker, competing in the hammer throw is the only action that day, while Thursday has NINE Buffs in action between the track (mainly) and field.

Big thanks to you Aztec! It's so nice to have all of the information in one place. It's times like this when I miss rep

So, the busiest day of the championships for the Buffs starts this evening. The Start List for today (used for the heat # information below) is at http://www.usatf.org/usatf/files/d4/d4f1bb85-cc97-4770-b44f-b88f935b2399.pdf ).

To see the action (I assume if you have necessary subscription and can sign in through your cable or satellite provider), Looks like the 1st round of the women's 5k run is available through stream only (at http://stream.nbcolympics.com/track-and-field-trials-day-7-host ), with overall Trials coverage starting there at 4:30 PM Mountain time (MT) and going to 6:00 MT. NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) than takes over with TV coverage, showing the Trials from 6:00-9:00 PM MT . (There's also a streaming option for the NBCSN TV coverage available through http://stream.nbcolympics.com/track-and-field-trials-day-7 .) Specific Race/ event times (in MT) for the various Buffs are in the below tweets.

(Both Buffs are in Heat 1. Top 6 finishers in each of the 2 heats, along with the 4 other fastest times, advance to Sunday's final.)

(Mr. Malone is in Flight 1 of 2. Out of both flights combined, throwers with Top 12 (of 24) distances in the prelim rounds will earn extra throws in tomorrow's final round.)

(All 3 Buffs are in heat 3 of 3. Top 6 finishers of each heat, along with the 6 other fastest times, advance to tomorrow's semi-final round.)

(Mr. Saarel is in heat 1 of 3. As in the women's 1500M, top 6 finishers of each heat, along with the 6 other fastest times, advance to tomorrow's semi-final round.)

(This being the only final for any of the Buffs today, top 3 finishers of this race qualify for the Olympics!)

So, after leading a lot of the race but then getting temporarily shuffled back to 7th in the last lap, Jessica Tebo is able to come back and grab the last automatic qualifying (6th) place in the finals. Laura Thweatt, who also led quite a bit of the race, finished a little back in 8th, so will need to wait until the 2nd heat is done to see if she can qualify on time (as one of the 4 other fastest times).

The 2nd heat goes a little quicker, so all 4 time qualifiers are coming from that heat, and therefore Laura Thweatt doesn't make the final.

Sucks, but it looks like he injured himself and took out the competitor behind him.

Sucks, but it looks like he injured himself and took out the competitor behind him.

And he still qualified. (Although as you say, he didn't look good the last ~20 yards or so, so hope he's not hurt. Hopefully just a cramp or his body just fatigued from his pace setting?)

Tough luck for coach Malone, although MASSIVELY impressive just to make the trials as many times as he has.

Congrats to Ms. Coburn for the win!!!!

And, GREAT effort by Shalaya Kipp, as no one in the "running press" was talking about her as a potential Olympic team favorite, and she ends up with an impressive (while of course agonizing one spot away from an Olympic berth) 4th place while coming through with a big personal record (I believe ~7 seconds?) in the biggest stage.

The live results are showing Ben Saarel was disqualified (DQ'd) in the men's 1500M.

Real bummer about Kipp. Would have been great to have two Buffs in Rio in the same event.

Coburn is becoming quite the national phenomenon. It doesn't hurt that she's drop dead gorgeous.

The story with Kipp provides a good perspective on how USA steeplechase has improved since 2012. Kipp qualified for the London games in 2012. She and Coburn were both on the team. Yet yesterday Kipp, running a personal best beating her previous best by 7 seconds (a gigantic step up in this kind of race) only finished fourth with a good sized gap between the third place finisher and her.

Also running in the women's 1500m semis is Niwot's Elise Cranny, who is two years removed from the local High School scene.

As I kind of expected, current Buff Ben Saarel wasn't able to start in his heat of the 1500M semi's, I assume because of the hamstring issues he mentions in his interview that can be seen in post #25 above. Hopefully he can get healthy for the soon- to- start cross country season (assuming Coach Wetmore and company don't decide to make this a re-building year for the men and choose to red shirt him this coming season, as they did this past season on the track.)
