I know this is wishful thinking, but WHAT IF:

What if Benson and DiStefano really aren't ignorant ****wads and kings of douchebaggery and just don't want Bohn making the hire, so they're taking the one in a million shot that Hawkins really is the next Mac and if he doesn't pan out, they bring in an AD next year that knows how to hire a coach?

i think there is some logic to the the admins having the realization that the program is in a precarious position. and, with current continuity in mind (along with the GPA, good citizen, graduation stuff)....that if Hawk goes out and wins 4 games next year, he's effectively fallen on his sword for them and they get to be the one's who "clean up the mess" and go in the new direction...and have had a year to prepare for it.

if they buyout Hawk now, then they absorb the onus to produce next year and the new, immediate, and risky (IMO) hire is on their plate. last thing they want is to enter the hiring market, get turned down by #1 and #2 and then end up with default choices (like Bill Callahan).

and, with the waiting game, there's the astronomical chance that Hawk is right about all this and everything pops with an experienced depth chart, a seasoned Hanson and whatnot (7 wins and a middle-tier bowl, say) and it saves everybody's bacon.

A huge risk....if these idiots are wrong, they have pushed the program back another couple of years...perhaps, past the point of recovery. We better pray that their decision pans out, or we are screwed in a big way.

One of the big bonuses of changing coaches now would have been that we have a couple classes of really good players that the new coach could have capitalized on while he took 2 classes to get his own players in.

The guys who will be juniors next year are good players. If we had got a new coach, he would have had two years with them and two years to bring in his own players. Now, even if Hawkins is replaced after next year, the next coach will have good seniors and after that, a whole bunch of question marks.

Bad situation.
