Woelk: Big plan still boils down to football success

But when DiStefano says athletics is a business — and he's made that very clear more than once — he's not talking about the ski team. He's not even talking about the best cross country team in the nation.

He's talking about the football team. He's talking about a new facility CU's administration hopes will help recruit the best possible players in the sports that can generate revenue.

Saturday afternoon, George offered every possible endorsement of CU football coach Mike MacIntyre.

"I think Mike is the guy," George said.

But, George also noted, "We need to compete for championships, and football is no different. ... We need to get better and Mike knows that."

Indeed — and until that happens, until the Buffs start winning regularly on Saturdays, CU's business of athletics will not be a successful venture.

That's a bottom line that can't be disputed.

Spot on, Neill!
