BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's golf team is set to compete at the Pac-12 Conference Women's Golf Championships, April 23-25, in Stanford, Calif.

Stanford University will host the 54-hole championship at the 6,269-yard, par 71 Stanford Golf Course. Teams from 11 of the 12 conference schools will be at the event, as Utah does not have a team.

While the Buffs have not competed at this course during the 2021 spring season, senior Kirsty Hodgkins, who is playing in her final Pac-12 Championship, has played this course before. As a freshman, she played a couple of tournaments there. Although she is the only current team member with course experience, her coaches, head coach Anne Kelly and associate head coach Brent Franklin, have taken teams here many times and have a lot of familiarity with it.

According to Kelly, "It's a course where you really have to drive the ball well."

A practice round will take place on Thursday, April 22 at 8:30 a.m. PT before the tournament begins on Friday morning. Tee times begin on Friday and Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and Sunday's start will be at 8 a.m. PT. CU will tee off on Friday at 9:30 a.m. PT from No. 10 and has been paired with Stanford and UCLA.

Live results will be available at GolfStat.com. Following the championship, there will be a 30-minute special on Pac-12 Network recapping the tournament on April 26.

(The Buffs look to be having a solid final round and are at +1 for the day 1/2 way through. The course seems to be playing much easier today, as half the teams are below par and the worst is +4, while for the tourney only the leaders (USC at -2) are under par overall, and cumulative total scoring looks to be around +200.)

The Buffs end up in 7th, where they began the day, but had their best round of the championships.

I'd guess they won't be considered for the NCAA tourney field this season, so want to wish the team the best in the off-season, and hope their one senior, Kirsty Hodgkins, has a positive end to her time at CU, and then the best wherever her journey leads.

STANFORD, Calif. – The Buffaloes saved their best round for last, firing a 287 on the last day of competition at the 2021 Pac-12 Women's Golf Championship on Sunday to take seventh overall.

Southern California never let go of the team lead after the first day and won the conference crown by five strokes. The Trojans, ranked 10th by Golfstat, recorded a 5-under 279 to finish with an 849. No. 26 Stanford moved back up to second (854) and No. 7 Arizona State placed third (860). Arizona, ranked 22nd, finished one stroke behind the Sun Devils (861) and No. 27 UCLA and No. 12 Oregon tied for fifth (875).

Colorado improved in each round of the championship and each day the team started on the 10th tee. CU shot a 302 on Friday and came back on Saturday with a 298. But Sunday's round of 287, which was 3-over on the 6,269-yard, par 71 Stanford Golf Course, was the best round the Buffs have recorded since the second round of the Branch Law/Dick McGuire Invite on Sept. 11, 2018, when CU recorded a 285. (That tournament was played on a par 72 course.)

The Buffs recorded an 887 for the championship, finishing ahead of Oregon State (896), Washington (897) and California (910).

"Our team fought really hard today and showed signs of what we have been capable of all semester," head coach Anne Kelly said. "We had 21 birdies today which is a huge improvement over the first few days. Kirsty started well then had a disaster hole, but as she has done for five years, she just kept fighting and found a way to shoot a good score. The finishing holes were very tough because of wind and hole locations.

"I'm really proud of how our team improved over the semester and the perseverance they showed. To compete with the very best, it takes time, hard work and dedication. This team, with the exception of Kirsty who is graduating, is young and very determined to compete at a high level."

INDIANAPOLIS — Colorado women's golfer Malak Bouraeda was one of 24 individuals selected to the 2021 NCAA Women's Golf Regionals on Wednesday.

The junior will represent CU at the Baton Rouge Regional, hosted by Louisiana State University, May 10-12 at University Club in Baton Rouge, La.

"This is a huge honor and I'm very excited to continue to represent our team," Bouraeda said following the announcement. "I'll be missing my teammates for sure but knowing they're cheering me on at home is pretty special. I'm very excited to make it to the postseason and hope to make everyone at home proud. I'm excited to see how we grow as a team and get better and hopefully, we'll be at a regional site all together next year!"

This is Bouraeda's first NCAA Regional appearance but she continues Colorado's streak of having either an individual or team compete at regionals since 2011. The Buffs qualified as a team in 2011 and '12. Then in 2013, Jenny Coleman was selected as an individual. Colorado then made five straight appearances (2014-18). Kirsty Hodgkins competed as an individual at regionals in 2019. There was no tournament in 2020 due to the pandemic.

"We are certainly very proud and happy for Malak for qualifying as an individual to the NCAA regional," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Of course we'd all prefer to go as a team but we simply did not play well enough to qualify this year, close but not quite good enough. This will be great experience for Malak and inspiration for the rest of the team for next year. The LSU course is very challenging and I think it will set up well for Malak's game."
...

Each regional site consists of 18 teams and six individuals. The top six teams and three individuals from non-qualifying teams advance to the national championships.

The NCAA Women's Golf Championships will be May 21-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. hosted by Arizona State and The Thunderbirds. The final three days of the championships will be televised live by the GOLF Channel.

Note: Per the leaderboard, "Monday's round has been postponed due to weather in Baton Rouge. The current plan is a 10 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday."

Looks like Ma Nature does NOT want golf to be played in Baton Rouge right now.

Too bad that Ms. Bouraeda is not going to get an opportunity to compete for an NCAA Championship berth.
