Women's Soccer NCAA Tournament

Found a couple web pages re soccer's situation-
(***To try and make sure this calculation DOES include all matches, went in and checked, and it does include the ACC Championship game played yesterday as far as North Carolina is concerned, as their schedule shows them ending up at the same record (17-3-1) as this RPI calculation. Note that sometimes in the past, at least for volleyball, these unofficial (if it is unofficial) calculations did sometimes have issues with calculating the adjustments to different sports' RPI's correctly, so not 100% sure the RPI is exactly accurate.)

  • Did find one webpage that does a women's soccer bracketology (something a Chris Henderson does on the "All White Kit" web page) that looks to have been updated (it's dated 11/4) after all the final matches were played yesterday, and the Buffs are listed as one of (4) teams listed as just out ("Last OUT") of the tournament - https://www.allwhitekit.com/

Oh, well- not a total shock*** but still a bummer.

Special thanks and best wishes (in realizing all their best goals) to the seniors- thanks for representing CU so well and giving us fans lots of exciting matches thanks to your (and your teammates) hard and smart work. For the returners, hope they get some recovery time (from injuries, etc., as well as this disappointment), then kick A on the field and in the classroom and gym, all while enjoying their special college years.

(***I believe I've read men's basketball has been decreasing RPI's importance in tournament selection- hope the other NCAA sports start following that change. The Buffs being rated #49 in RPI put them on the bubble. However, they are currently #24 in the Massey ratings (https://www.masseyratings.com/csocw/ncaa-d1/ratings), which I believe are considered a more accurate measure of a team's quality. Also, I haven't heard much of them so don't know about their quality or how much they're respected, but stumbled one time (while looking at volleyball) on the herosports.com rankings (which look to even factor in RPI to some extent). They also evaluate D1 soccer, and the Buffs are currently rated/ ranked #18 there (https://herosports.com/rankings/college-d1-womens-soccer).)

In a field of 64, when your losses are to a #1 seed, a #2 seed, a #4 seed, and the 1 team that finished 4th in the league (who also didn't make the tourney) and one your two ties are to a tourney team and both were on the road, there is no reason to be left out. The RPI system is flawed and shouldn't be used in small sample sets. Basketball is probably the only sport that plays enough games to have a decent sized sample set.

Best way to sum up how bad these ladies got hosed is this:
Denver is in. CU beat them 2-1. Further DU had three BAD losses (Northern Colorado, Colorado College and South Dakota State)
Arizona is in. CU tied them on the road and finished with a better conference record than Arizona. Arizona had its bad loss (Oregon)
Washington State is in and HOSTING. CU beat them 3-1 on the road and finished with a better conference record. WSU had two bad losses (ASU and Utah).

CU had one poor loss all year, Utah. Their only other losses were to a 1 seed, a 2 seed and a 4 seed.
Clearly too much weight is put on goal differential in the ratings index. The 7-0 loss to Stanford basically ended CU's season.

Just a couple notes from the TWICS show I put in my last post for those who didn't watch it-
1) Never know for sure with red shirt juniors if they'll be coming back or not, but sounds like J.J. Tompkins definitely plans on returning. Great news!

2) Sounds like the Buffs are going for (and must already have set up) some tough pre-season matches for next season, as Coach Sanchez says they'll be facing 3 top 10 RPI teams in non-conference play. (Excluding the 3 Pac teams in the Top 10, that would mean (assuming he's going off the current ratings), they're planning on facing 3 of the following - Florida State, North Carolina, Georgetown, Baylor, West Virginia, Tennessee, Texas A&M. Based on geography and past conference history, wondering if they might be planning on taking a road trip to the lone star state one weekend?)
