The University of Colorado women’s tennis program will be hosting its largest Invitational in its history this weekend from Thursday through Sunday (September 25-28) at the South Campus Courts. Admission and parking are free.
Joining CU will be Arkansas, Liberty, New Mexico, Southern Illinois and Utah.
The CU Invite covering four days will feature one round and two rounds of doubles on Thursday beginning at 3:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday’s play will begin at 8:30 a.m. each day with singles and doubles.
The CU Invite field features a pair of nationally ranked programs from last spring with Utah(12-9) and Arkansas (13-16). The Utes were No. 44, while the Razorbacks were No. 59 in the final ITA national team rankings. Utah junior Tereza Bekerova is No. 76 among the top 125 players ranked in the ITA’s Sept. 8 national rankings. The Utes were ranked as high as No. 27 nationally (Mar. 18) last season.
Also ranked nationally fall season are Razorbacks’ Shannon Hudson at No. 121 in singles, and junior Yang Pang/sophomore Oleksandra Shkorupeieva at No. 59 in doubles. Hudson, a sophomore was also selected to compete in the singles qualifying draw of the 2014 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships. She is the 21st Razorback to compete in the tournament.
Libertyfinished a program best 15-9 overall a year ago and garnered their first-ever ITA national ranking on March 4, at No. 74. Seniors Brittany Yang and Nicola Wellman combined 28-10 in singles play last year, leading the team to the No. 7 ranking in the Mid-Atlantic Region (highest in program history).
New Mexicowent 17-8 last spring and have only one senior on the roster (Natasha Smith). Sophomores Meredith Hopson and Gabrielle Otero have been selected to play in the ITA All-Americans for singles, while Smith and sophomore Dominique Dulski for doubles.
Southern Illinoiswas 17-8 a year ago and returns senior Natasha Omishima, who won 17 singles matches during 2013-14 season. Senior twin sisters Gisela and Ariadna Cairo Baza each won 16 matches, in addition to sophomore Polina Dozortseva, who won 15.
