2014 Colorado @ Arizona basketball game thread

This highlights something else never talked about: our horrible assist to turnover ratio. We're 11th in assists, and third in turnovers. Add in being LAST in 3pt shooting and perimeter shooting.

These are not things you can consistently overcome with good defense. Our guards are just so subpar right now.

Thanks for clearing this up, we didn't know how you felt. Please bring up with your concerns with Tad, these are the type of players he's recruited for the style of basketball he wants to play, clearly he sucks.

Well credit to XJ. Either way we can't have two of our starters lay complete goose eggs every game.

Since spencer and ski, guard recruiting has been terrible. Dom better be the truth or we are in trouble.

That is thing I don't get. People bitch about the players that Tad recruits, when it is 100% obvious that he brings in his guys. They fit his system, and his system works. Everything in the system got ****ed up because our NBA 1st Round Point Guard tore his ACL.

There are certainly things that can be criticized on this team but seriously, we were playing the #1 team in the country on the road without our best player, our chances of winnng were low to begin with even if we played better. Gordon is a total stud BTW and I will be glad he is in the NBA next year...Now if we play like shyte against ASU I will be more inclined to be upset.

Bizarre, too. It's usually pretty easy to find decent guards. Guard depth last year was a huge hole and it wasn't fixed.

What the **** is your problem? I never said Tad sucks. He's obviously the best coach we've had. But I do think he has some glaring holes in his style and recent recruiting. As Darth just pointed out, we've got big issues with guard scoring, in a league where guards dominate. I'm just pointing out some stats that seem to have some bearing on how we're performing.

I don't think this is something they think needs fixing - wing players than can handle the ball reasonably well, are athletic, have good length and play good D are what he looks for. Tad's not going after guards and missing out on them, he's not going after them.

What system works when you're last in outside shooting? Yep, Tad Ball wins if your guards are average, or slightly below average from outside. But when you're last?

My impression is that you've been extremely negative on this team. Almost like you're talking about Washington State's type of season. Buffs are pretty good. Team would be really good if Spencer hadn't gone down. Still a lot of season left and a very young team with more collective talent than we've seen at CU. Of course there are holes. Even elite programs have holes and young teams can be frustrating. Look at UNC this year. CU would shoot them out of the gym from deep and from the FT line. I don't think Roy Williams forgot how to coach or to value shooting skill in recruiting or practice.

This last class will be a good one. Jaron is still thinking too much. DT looked the best tonight that I have seen him in a long time, would be nice for him to find that mojo that had Tad excited early this year. Fletcher was looking fantastic on D until the court monster at UW struck. King is raw but he has had some bright spots too. Tad wasn't expecting to have to count on them this year though, unfortunately though the worst happened.

They're last without Spencer and Fletcher (I'm pretty sure you said that's the time frame you said you looked at). I would love it if CU hoops were at the point where you just plug in another Dinwiddie when one goes down. But we're not. Personally, I can live with that reality, given where we were even 5 years ago.

Lack of energy and want to tonight. Its like everyone on the team was looking at each other wondering who will score. All of a sudden its 18-4.

The team looks so tentative on offense. We passed up several 3's only to run the shot clock down and take a worse shot. Talton needs to look for the 3, miss or make. Someone besides Booker and XJ has to be willing to shoot 3's. That will give the bigs more room to operate.

Gordon and Hopkins showed their lack or experience tonight and a lack of confidence. Hopkins needs to be more assertive going to the hole, those guards can't stay in front of him. Wes justs needs to play like a man. Wes looked scared of some real bigs but hopefully he'll adjust.

We could've had a competitive game if our guys came out with a purpose in the first 5 minutes.

I do like when we full court trap. We should do it more especially in the beginning of the game.

Just my assessment.

We were fluctuating between 10th and 11th in 3pt and perimeter shooting with Dinwiddie. So it's not like it wasn't a liability even with him and Fletcher. And it was the same last year ...

2014
#1 Arizona- 5th in 3 pt shooting in conf

2013
#1 UCLA - 7th in 3 pt shooting in conf

2012
#1 UW - 11th in 3 pt shooting in conf

And yet somehow we managed to be ranked in the top 25 before our best player got hurt. If only those idiot AP writers had checked the stats first.

I really don't think you have a clue on what Tad is trying to do. He wants to win games by playing good defense first, getting rebounds and getting to the foul line. 3 point shooting is pretty low on his list and he managed to get the team to a 12-2 record with this lousy shooting team (on one of the harder schedules in the country I might add).

Look Tad is a smart guy. He turned CU hoops around but we aren't going to suddenly recruit like UCLA or Arizona until we have some sustained success. Right now we try to make the tourney every year and every 3 years or so we go on a run when our young guys develop. This was our year to go on a run. Don't be surprised if we struggle a bit next year and spend a lot of time on the bubble before going on a nice run the year after.

Just relax and enjoy how much better we are. If you actually were a fan since 92, then you should be pumped. If all you care about is 3 point shooting, go check out how awesome Oregon is doing.

It's not really a big deal but I wish we had an out of bounds play from underneath our own basket. There has got to be something better than chucking the ball into the back court.

I am pumped. Love Tad. Love that we're relevant. Just wanting us to take that next step. And 3pt shooting is not all I care about, hardly the case. Just think that if we were somewhere middle of the pack shooting from outside, we'd be taking that step. And I guess I don't see who on this team looks like a consistent shooter.

But you guys are right. I should be more optimistic. We're young and lots of reason to feel good about the future.

Trust me we are all dejected. We can't step out of the past and think what this season was meant to be. We have to rally behind the team and make the dance and just come back stronger next year.

Tell me Nick Johnson wasn't their best player and I don't think he made a single three but plays like a more aggressive Spencer IMO.

I've given you a hard time and it's not that I don't want to be where you think we should be, it's just that I think it's hard. Tad isn't beating out Oregon, UW, Stanford or AZ for guys in the conference yet. He's got to find undervalued guys he thinks fit his system. Trust me, I think there's nothing that makes a defense be honest or makes a team have great spacing on offense than a shooter. Tad seems to think differently, can we question him? Sure, but he's also taken this program to a place nobody on this board has seen before. He thinks elite defense and so so offense will win more games than having a Brady Heslip type of player who can shoot lights out but is a complete liability on D.

i want CU to take the next step too, but I have a feeling we're going to see the next step come via the way of elite D, not knock down shooters.

not to hijack the subject but i look across the country and it seems finding decent college level SF's is not particularly difficult. (Not really CU related). Seems some teams almost have too many at the expense of other areas of need.

It was a frustrating game with a ton of talent on the AZ team. By far the best team we will see all year and so tough on the defensive side of the ball. We showed signs of life at times and I thought played fairly well in the second half. XJ played tough and was showing signs of what he needs to be game in and game out. Jelly was solid.

The Buffs were overmatched tonight. AZ was quicker and it took the Buffs a long time to settle down and figure out how to deal with the pressure that quickness caused. Way too many turnovers most caused by the AZ pressure but several were from sloppy play. AZ took care of the ball as I think they only had 5 turnovers.

This was a good learning experience for the Buffs. Stating the obvious, that is a damn good AZ bball team and I am not sure they will lose a game before they get to Boulder. We get one more chance on our court and our young Buffs will have had more time to mature, gel and gain more confidence in playing without Mayor. I still see this team getting to the 20 win count this season and am looking forward to watching them progress. The future is bright for this team.
