I get plenty, you had no clue who either of these guys were but hey, great fits!

Your opinion of these two is no more profound than anyone else.
I dont know these guys, but I will take the choices of a winning SEC coach and his opinion of these guys over what you think you know.

What about when he was a losing NFL coach? Does that make him all knowing? Ask a bears fan about him. I support him no matter what but you guys that act like “how dare you question the savior” are brainwashed

Never said he was all knowing. Just knows more than you. I am sure he also learned from his mistakes. You want to pick on a couple years in the NFL where he no talent to work with, ok. He has a plan and a process, that he learned from the best coaches in football. I trust in that process.

Tell me his plan was Summers and not Lanning and I’ll admit I was 100% wrong and blindly follow every decision like a sheep

So I'm a Georgia Southern fan. Today's news was a bit of a surprise to us. We were still on the hook for one more year of Summers' contract so thanks for taking care of that for us.

That said......he was ass my dude. He took the same roster that we transitioned to FBS with and went 18-7 the two years before he was hired and drove it right into the ground. We had the all time leader in YPC at RB (Matt Breida) and he managed ~3 YPC his last year and likely got costed a draft pick.

Our offense AND defense got worse, even more so in 2017. He was very much an old school, "gotta play tough" and knock heads in practice type guy. He came in and immediately said our team wasn't tough enough and didn't know how to practice, and basically destroyed everything we had that worked.

It was a mess.

Now, all that said, he's not the guy in charge now. He does seem to do well when someone else is in charge. Good luck to you guys. Tucker is a good defensive guy so if it's his scheme (Summers is a 4-3 or die guy) you'll know pretty soon who's doing the heavy lifting on that side of the ball.
Thanks for stopping in.

Yeah. My hope is that he was in over his head as a head coach. Wasn't he like 35 years old when you hired him & he tried to change a bunch of things with your systems despite how successful you'd been as a program doing things a certain way? Then, when that didn't have success right away, it looked like he panicked and tried to change things back in year two (losing the team in the process).

Is that a fair assessment?

I know little about him, but I do know that if a guy got a HC opportunity after having had 4 years of coordinator experience by the age of 35 then he's got some talent and must be pretty impressive. I wouldn't hire him as a HC, but I think a guy like that (after the SEC coaching rehab program) could do very well returning to a DC role underneath the guy who was running the defense at the program where he was rehabbing as an analyst.

P.S. Glad you guys got some salary relief. You owe us one. Schedule a game in Boulder or something. :D

Listen I’ll support him no matter what. Just don’t act like this was his grand plan. It’s already been reported on guys we’ve missed on. Hell we couldn’t get an Alaskan away from Tennessee with more money. These guys might turn out fine but let’s not act like everything is Rosey and going according to plan
I’m not saying there is a grand plan. In fact, I’d think it would show better that he has more than one plan. I think it’s universally accepted that he knows a lot of people. He’s going to bring in people to help build what he wants to build. I hadn’t heard of either of the coordinators before they were hired but I sure as hell don’t think I’m in a position to question his process either. My opinion and probably isn’t the same as many others.

Never said I knew his plan. Above my paygrade. I am however willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until he proves his process is wrong or miss guided. So far with his first 2 hires I dont have an issue you do thats fine, I will trust MT until he gives me a reason not too

I would say it's a bit of an understatement to say he was in over his head. The fact that he came out of left field when he was hired took a lot of people offguard as well. He had previously been on staff as DB coach back in 2006 under Brian VanGorder who finished 3-8....so he started with some negative associations that he had to work through.

He had coordinator/staff issues his entire tenure and there was no stability at all. He made some poor choices and/or promised people he couldn't deliver. The roster we had in 2016 was stacked, at least for our level, and shouldn't have finished with a losing record at all. Everyone knows how nuts we are about the option, and he promised to keep that going. You don't tell us that and not do it, because we're some of the only fans in the country that are smarter than a lot of coaches in regards to how the option is run. We were at 3-0 and asking questions about what the hell was going on, and his response was "We're 3-0, what more do you want?" He also at one point incited a "us against them" type of attitude in the team against the fanbase after the large amount of criticism he received.

Even before his first season started, he made some comments in the summer about being apprehensive about being noticed out in town. We're a small community and the HC can't just hide. I don't think he was ready for the scrutiny that came wiht the position either.

What bothered me about him the most was a comment he made early, where he stated "No one knows defense like me," and then we proceded to have some of the worst 1st and 2nd down defense I've seen in a while. We had good 3rd down defense, but it was kind of skewed by the low 3rd down attempts we saw.....teams were converting on 1st and 2nd way too much. Our scheme was also really poor in a conference and a schedule with spread teams that liked to pass a lot. Too many times we had LBs matched up on WRs and opposing teams abused the hell out of those matchups.

I do think he's probably in a good situation there under Tucker, as he can continue to expand his experience and learn more. It's quite possible he's not a bad hire. He was just a terrible hire for us.

Wasn't that hire made at about the same time you all jumped from FCS to FBS?

Okay I'm going to try and deliver a sane take on these coordinator hires-Johnson is a lot more critical than Summers is because our HC is a former DC. Summers is going to either have that title in name only or he's going to be calling CMT's defense-just like DJ did for MM. Johnson will have complete control of the offense-and what concerns me there is this: The offense he coordinated at Minnesota in 2016 averaged 358.9 yards a game......good for 103rd in the country. We can talk about how skilled Mitch Leidner was or wasn't.........but that ain't good. As far as Summers, resume isn't anything to write home about. He's been a good DC at the G5 level-but no experience at the P5 level.

Thus, two major thoughts-One, I'll keep an open mind relative to this staff. These guys will get a shot here. Two, I've heard the phrase "big boy football" a lot since the hiring of CMT-Well, "big boy football" means "big boy expectations". This program is in a lot better shape than it was the last time we went through this process-This is NOT a rebuild, and I think this program needs to go bowling in 2019.

Our first year in FBS was 2014. We were eligible to win our conference (becoming the first team in history to go undefeated in conference play in our first year in FBS as a move up) but not play in a bowl. We were bowl eligible in 2015 and finished 9-3 with a 58-27 win in the GoDaddy Bowl.

Our coach left shortly before the bowl game and we hired Summers like 2 days before the game. His first season was our third year in FBS, with a majority of the same roster that beat Florida in the Swamp in 2013 and won the conference in 2014.

You all need to chill the *** out! Tucker just got here and he does not have a vault to open up to pay top coordinators to appease you fools. He was the best available candidate to come to Boulder this year but he’s not a miracle worker. George made the right choice but he had to let Tucker know that there’s a budget for his staff. Unfortunately, the budget will not allow him to out bid the big boys in collegiate football. Once Tucker starts winning and bring money to the program, and MM’s buyout is less of a liability, is when George allows a bigger budget to upgrade the staff. Let’s see how JJ and TS do as coordinators, but if Tucker rights the ship then he’ll release the weak links. Rome wasn’t build in a day brothas.

He offered the Tennessee tight ends coach more money than he’s making there and he said thanks but no thanks. You also don’t know that he didn’t offer Lanning more money

I couldn’t agree more.
