CU has rejoined the Big 12 and broken college football - talking out asses continues

Reminds me of when CU spent a year and lots of money doing a rebrand and logo consolidation effort and basically just chose our existing logo, those consultants were geniuses.
When "CU" was italicized. It's like remembering you had a deadline 6hrs prior, so you said screw it and presented your work. Piss poor, but it was already paid for and probably done by an intern.

Don't worry about Cal. They've got the solution to their revenue issues figured out. Coach Prime and Rick George could learn something from them on how to reinvigorate a brand.

Been an issue at the university for a long time - their dual branding. Outside of PAC fans and a solid proportion of California residents, most people don't know that Cal = Berkeley.

Not sure I care about this issue too much though. My only care would be don't mess up the script Cal logo.

I have never understood why they don't go with California. Way more impressive sounding.
For athletics or the campus? "Berkeley," as an academic brand, has much more global brand equity than does "California." So the admin is going to lean that way. They are wanting to make the Cal sports teams more obviously tied to that brand.

Again, not sure I agree with it, but I understand where the admin is coming from with it. Kinda. I'd just leave it as is personally.

In all respects I think that "California" carries more weight than "Berkeley". I absolutely hate when people refer to CU or Colorado as Boulder or UC Boulder.
Granted, my opinions are biased by having been a football fan long before I was picking out colleges to attend.
In almost all cases the top public institutions are known by a singular name matching the state in which they are located. Lesser schools have to tack on State or Tech or some direction or some city. But that's just my opinion and I know it is not shared by any Cal fans I have talked to.

Ya, there's lots of data showing that across the US and especially internationally, Berkeley is the academic brand people recognize. If we were just choosing a brand from the start I think a lot of people would be cool with "California." I agree with you that California sounds much better for a football team. But admin is just wanting to lean into that existing brand equity.

Then there is that “other” school with the same name thats just as prestigious for the thing they do

I agree that “CALIFORNIA” should be the choice.

I had a friend who went there. He is now the base player for Thievery Corp

Aren't people associated with or graduates of UC Berkeley pretty smart? Yet they can't figure out that Cal the football team is the same as Cal-Berkely, University of California at Berkeley, etc??

Yep there is brand power in being the State flagship.
