Sean mother****ing Lewis

The book on us now is to play a lot of DBs & keep everything in front to avoid big plays through the air. If we can't figure out how to run the ball against that, it's a problem. If we can't figure out how to give Shedeur a ton of time to let plays develop against a 3- or 4-man rush, it's a problem.
How about 2 backs
How about toss sweep
How about stretch run
How about option

Our one run play is shotgun draw with one back

no way Lewis’ playbook is that pedestrian. Surely there is some stuff that will be uncorked during conference play. I saw enough screens and other wide, slower to develop behind the LOS plays in the Chev years to know that unless you have stone cold dudes, this will not work for as much as they are being ran.

Leaving the middle of the field WFO is another thing that I saw enough of in the recent past. We need to get the freakishly athletic LB’s to patrol the middle. Hopefully with Bama showing cracks, this allows some of that talent to come here now!

I don’t mind the dump passes to Edwards to be used like a run. But until McCaskill gets healthy and our line starts to do something, trying to establish the run inside with Edwards and Hankwillerson isn’t going to get it done. And Horn is so good, but just can’t let some of those balls drop. Maybe the emergence of our tight end will open some stuff up.

Fauria, Wells, and McCaskill would go a looooong way in shoring up protection for 2

Even if we can’t get push on the run game, that would at least solidify better protection. Dylan and Mikey are giving a hell of an effort, but it’s good if we can get some bigger dudes in there on some plays to help the OL

You do that to keep the defense honest. If you dont the defense will all drop back into coverage and take away the passing game so their lineman have time to harrass/force a bad pass/get the sack. Shedeur running himself more could help with that too. But doing it too much risks injury. We seem to lack the OL and or RB to dictate to the DL whats going to happen. Defenses are already figuring this out from film and or as the game goes on because they see we struggle to run.

Were 3-0 on the backs of skill players and excellent coaching and game management. Someone with talent is likely going to figure out how to beat us. Especially if our defenses whiffs a game.

Fauria was in a couple times on Saturday

I was somewhat convinced that Sean Lewis is holding things back from the playbook, but then I watched various game films and he has an incredibly vanilla running game philosophy. His passing game stuff is next level, especially when you have a QB as good as Shedeur running it, but his offenses have relied on running QB's, better OLs, and RBs that can make something out of nothing, mainly on shotgun RPO draws.

Coach Lewis is a talented and bright guy, but it seems that his running game design, and execution is honestly, substandard by any metric.

His QB is in Shotgun 100% of the time, no under center, and no pistol

He runs about 80% straight RPO Shotgun draws, and it gets stood up a lot. By running that play over and over, he also brings most of the defense into the box and thus whether he runs it, or the QB is gonna throw, there is a lot of defensive traffic in the middle.

We are 3-0, it has worked enough, but beyond Shedeur making magical plays, his running game is meh

Counterpoint: anytime Edwards gets the ball he can make it into a big play. I was in no state to pay attention to CSU's defensive alignment, but I assume going forward that teams are not going to stack the box against us.

What I would like to know in regards to our running game(besides when will McCaskill be healthy) is, why we have seen basically nothing from Smoke. I think he got 1 touch in 3 games.

There are definitely some players not getting much action I have wondered about. Smoke is the big one on offense, Kennedy on defense.
And Cormani
Wonder if they are Non-Believers
Not that they are not great teammates or great players, but maybe it's body language and coachability

I’m surprised Wilkerson didn’t get more opportunities. He broke tackles and ran extremely hard.

We kept returning to Edwards and he did break a long one but was ineffective for much of the game.

I badly want to see what a healthy McCaskill can provide as well.

Might be nice to have more packages with both on the field. Edwards is so dynamic that he’ll require the defense to track him each play.

Edwards is explosive and a home run threat. That said, he isn't an every down back. Wilkerson has more potential to break a tackle, but the OL isn't giving a very good opportunity for anybody to run. The run blocking is poor. I'm not sure a back like McCaskiill, as good as he is, fixes all the run game issues.

Cormani has been showing up in some of the WOM videos as of last week. Might be working his way in.
Horton was eating Breedlove and Cooper’s lunch for the majority or the game.

I’m a bit surprised the coaching staff didn’t throw Cormani out there and just see what he could do against those shallow crossing routes.

Prime actually called out those crossing routes in the halftime speech but we just couldn’t stop it. That leads me to believe that the CB’s and LB’s out there just weren’t getting the job done.

He was at under 2 ypc iirc. Run game just never got into any sort of rhythm.

Prime has said Cormani simply isn't ready. I'm guessing we'll see him a little in the next few weeks
Weird, b/c we were attacked for suggesting that Cormani likely wouldn't see significant time until later in the year, and adamantly told that he is HIM. He probably will be some day, but it's a process that most recruits need to grow into. TH is the exception.

The shallow crossers felt like a little bit of a schematic issue as well. It’s a man beater concept and Cooper just couldn’t stay with Horton. Later in the game they made some plays when they were in more zone coverage.

I think they want to play man, especially with Hunter, but they may need to move to more of a zone scheme without him, which puts more pressure on the LBs
