A&M versus SMU Game Thread

Really? I didn't know that, funny stuff.

yeah, Bliss was good coach. Bobby Knight assistant. he won the Big 8 at Oklahoma when they had historically been crap. late 70's. he took the SMU job and used to mimic RMK wearing awesome/terrible SMU plaid blazers. my step-dad in Norman says Bliss was a great guy and they hated it when he left. they hired Billy Tubbs and that worked out pretty good. pretty surprised he turned out to be a moral loss from what you hear otherwise.

he had good SMU teams and outside Houston and Guy Lewis....not like the SWC was a real basketball league. Penders made the Sweet 16 at UT once but i always thought Penders was kind of crap.

SMU wants a Top 25 program according to their AD. I like their goals.

my sister works at SMU and she's not a football fan at all. but, she does say they've been ramping up support the last few years. they have money. now, they need to dump Matt Dougherty...he sucks.

June Jones is the guy I wanted when Hack was fired

And I don't think "old blood" is necessarily the answer if you're looking to the future as a program but I was also skeptical of Jones leaving what he had in Hawaii (could have retired there with winning seasons every year) but he has at least stepped SMU's game up a notch after Phil Bennett was dismissed. Like what Jones brings but the guy himself just seems too old school for me to think that he's the right fit if CU had a long-term vision of the program with a single coach. Embree is a home run in that area, all it's missing is the winning culture returning.

As for A&M's offense, I'm really impressed even if it's "only" SMU. Dual running backs makes me long for Brown/Purify days and Tannehill is passing well. Big O-line protecting pretty well and defensive backfield is wowing. They're in great recruiting territory, hope Embree's staff can turn things around and go to SE Texas and sell those guys on building something in Boulder versus Collie Station.

I believe UT made it to the Final 8 before losing to one of Nolan Richadson's teams back when they were both still in the SWC.

Boobs were first allowed in the Corps in 1973. I think I saw one (technically two) in the crowd of them. I'd add that to the drinking game.

Well played. I was actually talking about the DBs who most of us would make fun of throughout our education careers. Question - Where do these guys end up in the real world after they graduate?

Yep. 1990 with their "BMW" Blanks/Mays/Wright lineup. Big underachievers in the 90s under Penders until his issues with KU transfer Luke Axtell sent him packing and ushered in the Rick Barnes era. In fact Houston was the only SWC school to reach the Final Four after Baylor & SMU did it in the 50s. So yes, not a basketball conference.

Carolina and aik are right about that Penders team. though the Nolan Richardson NC is when, 94 or something? were they in the SWC or SEC then? i wanna say SEC. Corliss Williamson, Todd May? he had a really good team with Sidney Moncrief...too. or was that Eddie Sutton? i know Nolan was at Tulsa inna day....

I just looked it up, they joined the SEC for the 91-92 season and won the NC in 94. They also made it to the national championship game in 95 but lost to UCLA.

Whoa. Always forget about Arky being in SWC that recently. Yes, the Scotty Thurman team was '94. SEC member at that point. Eddie Sutton had them in the Final Four back in the 70s too.

I am guessing...the guy who collects the carts at Costco, or who tells you the size of screw you need at Home Depot...he is an Aggie....

Aggie is poster child for "My daddy got me this job and I'll end up giving my sons the same job." Daughter will go to A&M and be more career-minded than in past generations, but the MRS degree is still the popular double major.
