BOULDER – The Colorado Buffaloes’ loss to Arizona State on the road was ugly in a lot of ways, and it just got uglier. In addition to relinquishing a 10-point lead multiple times, the Buffs also lost a stud offensive lineman during the back-and-forth battle. Tim Lynott Jr., who has played in several crucial spots for the Buffs this season, has torn his Achilles and will miss the remainder of the year.
“It’s a torn Achilles and they’re going to have to operate,” head coach Mike MacIntyre said Monday.
Lynott has started every game over the past two years, racking up 24 total starts. He has played primarily at right guard, but has also taken a significant amount of snaps at center as he stepped in for injured teammates.
In the wake of Lynott’s injury, it is likely that Aaron Haigler will take over at right guard and Johnathan Huckins will resume his position at center after missing several weeks with an injury. Jeromy Irwin and Gerrad Kough will continue to bolster the left side of the line, while Isaac Miller and Josh Kaiser both appear to have their hands in the mix at right tackle.
It’s a devastating blow to a Buffs offensive line that was already struggling to find the right mix of talent and physicality up front.
“It’s really tough for Tim,” MacIntyre said. “He was really playing well. That hurts our offensive line, to say the least.”
Lynott is set to miss a significant period of time as he recovers and rehabs his injury, but he should return in time to participate in fall camp with his teammates.
“He’ll definitely be out for spring ball,” MacIntyre said, “and I think we’ll get him back in the summer, before camp and he’ll be ready to go for camp, I was told, full speed.”
Lynott was named a freshman All-American last year after an impressive first season with the Buffs. His injury is a big loss for a Buffs offensive line that has struggled to protect the quarterback and create gaps all season, but getting him back for week one of 2018 will be a huge boost for CU.
