The Colorado Buffaloes football program announced Friday that they will be retiring jersey No. 19 during the 2017 season. This, of course, will be in honor of 1994 Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam who passed away last December at the age of 42.

The announcement was made by longtime “Voice of the Buffaloes” Larry Zimmer during CU’s annual football kickoff luncheon.

Salaam appeared in 27 games for the Buffaloes before being drafted first round by the Chicago Bears in 1995.

The CU legend led the nation in rushing, scoring, and all-purpose yards on his way to becoming the first and only Buffalo to ever win the Heisman Trophy.

In CU’s 127-year football history, there have only been three retired numbers. No. 24 worn by the legendary Byron “Whizzer” White, No. 67 guard and linebacker Joe Romig and No. 11 worn by Bobby Anderson.

The jersey retirement ceremony will take place at CU’s homecoming game on Oct. 28 against the California Golden Bears.
