The lacrosse season, in which the Buffs (8-7 overall, 4-3 in the Pac 12 last season) have been chosen 2nd in the pre-season Pac 12 poll, is scheduled to begin their season this Friday with a game against Louisville (5-11 overall, 1-9 in the ACC last season). The Cardinal defeated CU in KY in the Buffs' season's opener last year 9-12.

Game is supposed to have live streaming coverage. (Link available below.)

BOULDER – The 2022 season is just days from starting and Colorado lacrosse coach Ann Elliott Whidden is happy about where her team is as the first game approaches Friday, February 11, against Louisville.

"This is a focused group that is committed to working hard every day and is trying to get better and is playing for each other," she said. "We learned a lot of things about where we're at against a really good team from our scrimmage against Northwestern. We know what we need to do to get ready to play and to compete."

One of the biggest questions surrounding the team could be about the goalkeeper position. In Colorado's eight seasons as an NCAA program, the Buffaloes have had two starting goalies: Paige Soenkson (2014-17) and Julia Lisella (2018-21). Now entering the ninth season, that position is up for grabs and Whidden says it has been a competition between all three goalkeepers on CU's roster: sophomore Danielle Heintz, junior Grace Donnelly and senior Molly Galloway.

"It's been exactly that, a competition," Whidden said. "It's been really neat because the three of them push each and challenge each other every day. All three of them want to play. It's going to be a tough decision for us."

Something that won't be tough for Whidden and her staff will be figuring out her offense as the top scorers, including Sadie Grozier, a fifth-year athlete, return to the lineup. Grozier played and started in all but one game for the Buffs in 2021 and scored 39 goals and added 13 assists to lead CU with 52 points. Charlie Rudy led the Buffs last season with 45 goals despite missing the final two contests due to injury.
...

The first step to starting the season off on the right note will be against the Louisville Cardinals this Friday at 3 p.m. Admission is free. This is the season opener for both, who will be meeting for the second time. The other time was the 2021 season opener in Louisville where the Cardinals came away with a 12-9 victory.

This year the Buffaloes will be looking their own home field advantage; something Kittredge Field is known for since CU is 41-11 (.789) there.

Looks like I had the start time for tomorrow's game wrong in the header, and now it's been changed anyways. With weather coming, 2:00 PM is now the scheduled start time.

BOULDER — The Colorado lacrosse team's season opener Friday, February 11, against Louisville, has been moved up one hour and will now start at 2 p.m. at Kittredge Field, the University of Colorado athletic department announced Thursday.

The contest was originally slated for a 3 p.m. start, but due to the potential for inclement weather later in the afternoon, university officials and both teams made the call to move the start time.

This is the second meeting between the two teams and it is the first trip to Boulder for the Cardinals. The two met for the first time in Louisville to start the 2021 season, which went in favor of UL (12-9).

Colorado finished the 2021 season with an 8-7 record and was 4-3 in Pac-12 play. Louisville was 5-11 overall and recorded a 1-9 mark in ACC play.

It's a 2-3 Louisville lead after 1 quarter. (Rules evidently changed to add quarters this season.)

Announcer said 5-10 minutes ago that, due to player safety (it continues to snow heavily), the game is being moved to the indoor practice facility (IPF), and no fans will be allowed in.

nice win for the buffs. Would be interesting to get commentary on how the new goalie did. Nice to see Rudy out their even with the brace. crazy game. Huge snow and moved to the IPF.

BOULDER - The Colorado Lacrosse held off Louisville for a 14-13 overtime win Friday in the 2022 season-opener at Kittredge Field and the Indoor Practice Facility (IPF) in Boulder.

The two teams played one quarter of the game outside with snow covering the field and flurries continuously increasing. After the conclusion of the first quarter, a decision was made to move the game indoors due to the inclement weather, and the remaining three quarters were played across campus at the IPF.

"It was a little bit of an unpredictable day," explained CU head coach Ann Elliott Whidden. "Trying to play outside and not having that work, and then having to come inside, it was a big adjustment. It's hard when you start a game and then take 50 minutes off and have to restart. I thought our group did well throughout that.

"We were excited and ready to go. It was a battle. I told the players at the beginning of the day, there's a 1% chance that this goes perfect, and there's a 99% chance that it goes completely different. I think we fell on the other percent where there was a 1% chance that it was going to be (crazy). At the end of the day, they stuck with it. We came out with the win. Based on how we started the last couple seasons, to come out on the right side of this and have a group that responds. We kept believing and to have different players step up is a really good first start for us. But it was crazy."

A tightly contested battle the whole way, the Buffs held a 12-9 cushion headed into the fourth quarter. The Cardinals fought back and tied the game at 13-13 to force overtime, where Sadie Grozier scored the game-winner for the Buffs as part of her six goals on the day to lead the Buffs. Charlie Rudy also played well, tacking on three goals of her own.

"Sadie did a great job. Charlie did a great job," said Whidden. "I thought our attack overall was good. (The Cardinals) were trying to shut them down for a little bit. I thought the two of them did a good job of staying in the game when they had opportunities of finishing them and being aggressive. I'm really proud of them and I'm really proud of our offense for having different players step up and do their role."

This is the second-straight year the Buffs opened their season against the Cardinals, as CU redeemed itself after a 12-9 loss last year in Louisville.

"We're a different team," Whidden said. "Offensively, we're a little more balanced. We have players that see space a little bit better (and that) can compete against the zone better. At the end of day, we just weren't scared. We came out here and competed. Last year, we were scared and unsure. This year, we are a little more confident and experienced on what we were doing."

CU goalkeeper Grace Donnelly recorded seven saves off 31 Louisville shots - 20 of which were on goal in her first career start. The Buffs were impressive in free-position attempts and took advantage of their opportunities, scoring on 8-out-of-10. Louisville was led by Nicole Perroni who had five goals while their goalkeeper Sara Addeche had seven saves on 26 CU shots with 21 of them on goal.

Up Next:
The Buffs will travel to Cambridge, Mass. next Sunday Feb. 20 where they will take on Harvard at 10 a.m. MT.
