BOULDER – Colorado women's basketball will be back in action at the CU Events Center on Friday (7 p.m. MT), hosting No. 8 Utah in the Buffaloes' first home game since Dec. 16.

Colorado (12-3, 2-1 Pac-12) has played eight road games and a total of nine games away from Boulder this season. The Buffs have had success away from their home court, boasting five wins in six wins in those nine games.

"It's wonderful to be home," head coach JR Payne expressed. "We played so many road games this year, even though we're only halfway through the season. It's wonderful for all of us to be able to stay home. I think the biggest thing is just being able to get into a routine. We haven't started back with classes yet so we can just focus on rest, recovery and training. I think all our players and coaches can enjoy that."
...

"I think the goal is to just play great basketball every time we play," Payne added. "We want to play good, clean basketball. Play hard. Be together. Be organized. I think if we can continue to do that and continue to build off of last weekend's success, then we can continue to be successful."

CU's last loss came at the start of Pac-12 play in Salt Lake City. The Buffs stumbled against the undefeated Utes (14-0, 3-0 Pac-12) who have gotten off to their best start since the 1997-98 season.

"They're a really good team," Payne continued. "It's a tough matchup no matter what. We went back and watched the film again and there were a lot of things that felt out of sorts for us. We didn't feel very organized. The execution wasn't great on either side of the floor. We are really trying to prioritize making sure we're all on the same page, organized in what we're doing and just try to play better basketball."

Friday is the Buffaloes' annual Pride game. Fans will receive free CU Pride buttons to display throughout the game.

Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have the call on the Colorado Radio Network, the Varsity App and CUBuffs.com/Listen. Pregame coverage will start a half-hour before tip.

Thad Anderson and former Buff Kami Carmann Snyder will team up for the Pac-12 Network broadcast.

Note - Doesn't look like this preview really gives any detail on the Utes. For that, I recommend going to Buffzone ("Key players" and "Notes" sections) - https://www.buffzone.com/2023/01/05...fs-focused-going-into-rematch-with-no-8-utah/

Both defenses playing TOUGH, and the Buffs take a 31-24 lead over the #8 Utes (who are 3rd in the NCAA offensively, overall averaging over 88 points a game) into the half. Some timely 3's from Foreman were key late, and she leads the Buffs with 13.

BOULDER – The day began with four remaining undefeated Division I basketball teams and ended with three.

Colorado (13-3, 3-1 Pac-12) shocked No. 8 Utah at the CU Events Center with a 77-67 win on Friday. The upset avenged CU's 27-point loss at Utah and pushed the Buffaloes' win streak to five in a row.

"What a game I am incredibly proud of our team," head coach JR Payne exclaimed after the win. "It was a total team effort. So many people had such a huge impact at different times of the game, whether early or late. We had some foul trouble and people came in and did their job and helped us maintain our place. Some big possessions were late. Our defensive effort was tremendous. We wanted to be disruptive and made them work for their points. I think for every possession. They had to work for it, which was what we wanted to do. So just super proud of our group tonight."

Junior Frida Formann totaled a game-high 20 points, going 4-for-6 from the 3-point line. Senior Jaylyn Sherrod stepped up in the clutch for the Buffs, finishing with 16 points and seven assists. Sophomore Aaronette Vonleh and senior Quay Miller also played big roles in the win with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

The Buffs keyed in on Utah's Alissa Pili, who scored 25 points in the team's first meeting. Pili had just five points at the end of the third quarter and finished with 14 on the night. The Buffs also flipped the script on the Utes, who scored 44 points in the paint at Utah. This time around it was Colorado with 46 points in the paint, holding Utah to just 24.

"We tried to be as disruptive as possible and play different angles on ball screens," Payne said of the team's defense. "They play so pretty. Their basketball offensively is so smooth and free-flowing, and we just wanted to limit their comfort on the offensive end of the floor. And we did that well."

Colorado took the lead midway through the second quarter and never relinquished it. CU's lead hit 14 in the fourth quarter and the Buffs held on as Utah cut the advantage to as few as four down the stretch.

Utah (14-1, 3-1 Pac-12) had four players finish in double figures, led by Jenna Johnson. She totaled all 17 of her points in the second half.

Fantastic game played by my team. Frida and Nettie were especially good. Radio announcers said Nettie dunked before the game. I so hope she gets a dunk in a game by the end of the season.

The 3 guards of Frida, Jaylon and Wetta did a great job and made those clutch free throws at the end. What a fun game to watch!

Monster win!

We better be ranked after this one.
So fun to see us rising and to be (hopefully) ranked! What JR Payne has done is impressive- she has worked hard to build our women’s basketball program back to being a team that is fun to watch and has a winning attitude. This team could challenge for the pac 12 title with that kind of performance yesterday.

I wasn't sure if coach Payne could turn things around after those first few years, but she has really reinvented the team over the last few. Love to see the transformation of this team into a more physical and mentally tough group.

It's very difficult to get players who want to come to a consistently losing program, which is what JR inherited. We had been that way under KMM and Lappe.

JR has been able to make good use of the transfer portal since the rules changed. She got Wetta and can hopefully get more Colorado players.

She still isn't getting highly ranked recruits but they are higher than she got early on. The staff seems to work with the players to improve and get better throughout their career.

From the outside looking in and attending a few road games, it appears the team is tight and has a lot of respect for the staff.

The players are also smart in the books. Not many of the players will play professionally and she wants them prepared for life after basketball. So many college players say they want to coach. Well, there are not that many coaching jobs for half of each team to coach in DI.

Sherrod will graduate in May with a master's degree. That's in 4 years.

Per CU email. Sunday's women's game versus Arizona State is canceled and won't be rescheduled. No reason given.

UConn did it last weekend, I believe. Villanova is down to 8 players on the roster in total.

I believe it's an NCAA rule that you must have 8 scholarship players or forfeit.

Back in the olden days, we played most of a season with 8 players. They called themselves Eight is Enough.
